Yes — you can install This kit on the Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX 9" modular receiver: a 1-DIN hide-away chassis plus a separate 9" HD screen (Amazon link in the video description) with a 30 min DIY job. Wiring and mounting Pioneer's 9" modular DMH-WC6600NEX in a Subaru BRZ: match the Metra harness colours, pull the factory radio, tap the parking-brake wire.
Overview
John installs Pioneer's roughly $1,000 DMH-WC6600NEX, a 9-inch tablet-style screen with a separate single-DIN chassis, in a Subaru BRZ. The wiring was the easy part: he twists the Pioneer and Metra harness wires together and tapes them, matching colours (red is accessory power, yellow is constant power, orange is dimmer, blue is the amp turn-on, which the BRZ needs because it has an amp; grey, white, green and purple are the speakers, with the black-striped wire as each negative). Pull the radio trim (clips on the BRZ), remove the four Phillips screws (10mm bolts on some cars) and slide the radio out; putting the car in fourth gear gives more room. Then unplug everything, watching the sharp brackets. He mock-fits first: plugs the harness into the chassis and the screen cable (it looks like HDMI but it's the display link) and fires it up. Bluetooth calls and audio, HD Radio (the antenna needs 12V on its blue wire for a stronger signal) and Alexa work, and Android Auto runs over USB-C. CarPlay and Android Auto wouldn't start until the parking-brake wire was connected, so he crimped it to pin 15 on the 28-pin. The display sits about half a centimetre behind the glass, so you can see a shadow, and Android Auto scrolling looked choppy. The real problem is mounting: the screen bolts to brackets you then can't reach once the trim is on, and the BRZ's sloped trim leaves a gap. He calls it poorly designed for the price, though it looks nice once it's in.

Tools & parts
Tools
- Small Phillips screwdriver (or 10mm socket on cars with bolts)
- Trim removal tool
- Crimp connectors and crimper
- Electrical tape and twist ties
Parts
- Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX (chassis, 9" screen, mounting brackets, microphone, USB adapters)
- Metra vehicle harness for your car
- Radio antenna adapter (with 12V for the booster wire if your car needs it)
- Steering-wheel interface (Axxess ASWC-1) or iDatalink Maestro (optional)
Step by step
- 1
What's in the box▶ 0:07
Microphone, mounting brackets, USB-C and USB-A adapters, the 6600NEX chassis and the tablet-style screen, plus the Metra kit for the car.
- 2
Wire the harness on the bench▶ 0:52
Match colours between the Pioneer and Metra harnesses, twist the wires together and tape them. The instructions make it straightforward.
- 3
Remove the trim▶ 2:35
The BRZ's radio trim is held by clips and pulls right out. Other cars may use bolts.
- 4
Remove the radio▶ 2:50
Four Phillips screws (10mm bolts on some cars), then the radio slides out. Put the car in fourth gear for more clearance, unplug everything and watch the sharp brackets.
- 5
Know the wires▶ 5:36
Red: accessory power. Yellow: constant power. Orange: dimmer. Blue: amp turn-on (the BRZ has an amp). Grey/white are the front speakers and green/purple the rears, with the black-striped wire as each negative.
- 6
Mock-fit and power up▶ 6:45
Plug the harness into the chassis and connect the screen cable (it looks like HDMI but it's the display link), then turn the key.
- 7
Screen and Bluetooth▶ 8:24
The resolution is nice but not amazing. The display sits about half a centimetre behind the glass, so you see a shadow. Bluetooth pairing, calls and audio all work.
- 8
Radio antenna power▶ 14:04
HD Radio works, but the antenna's blue wire needs 12V to boost the signal. Tap it into a 12V accessory wire.
- 9
Parking-brake wire▶ 17:40
CarPlay and Android Auto wouldn't start until the unit saw the parking brake. Crimp the parking-brake wire to pin 15 on the 28-pin.
Tip: Count the pins on the connector to find the right one.
- 10
Android Auto test▶ 18:53
Android Auto works over USB-C and the audio sounds good, but scrolling looked choppy.
- 11
Mounting the screen▶ 20:33
The screen screws onto brackets. Put the screws on the correct side (John did it wrong first). It clips in and feels very stable.
Warning: Once the brackets are on, you can't get the trim back on or reach the bolts behind the screen.
- 12
The BRZ problem▶ 24:00
The BRZ's trim slopes, so the screen needs to stick out more and leaves a gap. John calls the mounting system poorly designed for a $1,000 unit.
- 13
Verdict▶ 29:03
It looks nice once it's in, but depending on your car it's really hard to mount.
Wiring notes
- Red: accessory/ignition power. Yellow: constant power.
- Orange: dimmer. Blue: amp turn-on (needed on the BRZ, which has a factory amp).
- Speakers: grey (front right), white (front left), green (rear left), purple (rear right); black-striped wire is each negative.
- Parking brake: crimp to pin 15 on the 28-pin so CarPlay and Android Auto run.
- Radio antenna booster: blue wire needs 12V.
- Rear camera input, AUX and mute are on the harness; USB-C on the back of the chassis.

0:00What's up guys, it's your boy John and we're back again with another video on the Pioneer head head unit
0:04Now we have everything kind of set up and laid out right here
0:07We have the microphone the mounting brackets we have, it's going to be kind
0:30how to mount USB C female to USB C, USB female,
0:37USB type A female into USB type C male,
0:42and then we have unit itself.
0:44This is the 6600NX, the tablet style.
0:50And then I have the metric kit there. the,
0:52so this was, actually really on easy to wire up.
0:55Now, I go through head units a lot,
0:57so what I usually do is I just twist tie it,
0:59and then I put some electric tape
1:00so that's how I did it and then you know
1:03that's just I'll link down below on where to
1:06where to
1:09Now this ends from Pioneer and this end is for your car
1:13in this case to be a
1:15usually works for
1:17so, but this would be the
1:29the black to this pin and yeah you're pretty much off to the races we can
1:30We have accessories, mutes, AUX, rear camera input, we'll see how that works in our practicality.
2:04and stuff and then you can tennis right here so everything's laid out get the
2:10disassemble your head unit right here someone disassemble this in the BRZ and
2:13we're gonna move forward and this thing just even runs okay the we're in the
2:24car right now now this is a universal head unit for bipyramir so this will
2:28work with most almost every car that's universal. I'm just to show you the install on the Subaru but
2:35it's very similar. First thing you want to do is remove the trim. Now this is either held up by
2:41clips or bolts in this case. It just pulls right out because it's held by clips. So we got that out
2:50there. Then it'll expose usually 10 millimeter bolts or Phillips heads so in this
2:55case we have some Phillips heads there's four of them. One, two, three, four. You
3:00just remove that and then the whole bad boy just slides right out.
3:04So I'm just gonna remove these screws using a small Phillips. Again this would be either a 10 or some kind of
3:14bolts. And this, believe it or not, this is probably the most difficult part part of it
3:44It's it's pretty easy if you just read the instructions because it- it's just kind of like
3:50red wire goes with red wire, black wire goes with- a black wire, and some wires like dimmer and
3:56other functions like that you would just it's usually like orange everything's
4:01really color coded coded and user friendly nowadays so I like the put it a in
4:05in like fourth gear just to get some more clearance and this is also like a
4:11difficult part like you just have to unplug everything so try to do your best
4:15to unplug everything off your previous head unit which I'm gonna press right
4:21here there's usually a little plastic tabs where you just pull down I'll be
4:27careful because these brackets are very sharp so you don't want this to be
4:33scuffing up your interior at all that would be very bad
4:41Oh, don't need to unscrew that.
4:57Voila, the whole head unit comes out.
5:04This is also a single-den kind of like the Pioneer's head the head unit.
5:07I actually like single-dens because you get a lot more space to work with.
5:12When you have a double-den, let me look at this wires.
5:15All these wires necessary.
5:17That's just how they make them.
5:19So when you have a double-den, you run into clearance issues.
5:23I know it's kind of messy and stay tuned because this is some of this stuff is from
5:33And, it just had these two plugs right here.
5:36Now, again, we have the red, which is the power, yellow, which is the power again, but
5:42red turns on when you have your keys on, into accessory mode.
5:47Yellow is constant, and then we have the dimmer switch, which is orange.
5:51Blue wire is usually at some kind of amp wire, so if your car has an amplifier,
5:56which this BRZ actually does.
6:04gray is the front right speaker, white is the front left speaker, and the things with the
6:12black stripes, so the same, the same the same thing, gray of a black stripe,
6:15is the negative of that speaker, white with a little stripe is the negative of the other
6:21speaker and that's pretty much it. Now this end, similar story, it's actually color-coded
6:28purple purple purple. Let's see if it's labeled on the thing. Okay, so green is
6:31Let's see if it's labeled on the thing.
6:33Okay, so green is going to be rear left, so that's the plus, and this is going to be rear left negative.
6:40Rear right plus rear right negative.
6:45So, we should, I like, what I do is I like to have like a mock fitment, make sure all the wiring works.
6:51So, I'm going to plug it in, and I'm going to plug in the head unit.
6:57Now, I never plugged in this head unit, so I'm hoping things go smoothly.
7:04Plug it into the back.
7:09Alright, and then that should fire it up.
7:11Now, if things fire up, I can start adding more accessories like FM radio and all that jazz. GPS.
7:20So, we're going to attach the, well, this thing, the back of this head unit is called HDMI.
7:27That's more like a display.
7:30You want to match up all these pins.
7:35So, this screen is thick.
7:39Alright, so I have it plugged in.
7:43Hopefully it doesn't block the vents, because I know how you guys feel about that.
7:50Alright, I'm going to turn the car on.
7:55I need the keys.
8:08It is on, my boys.
8:11It is on.
8:13Alright, let's just close the door, so it doesn't beep.
8:18Alright, so, we have the display.
8:24Now, the resolution right off the back, I can tell you, it's nice, it's nice.
8:29It's not amazing, but it's nice.
8:32But like I said in the unboxing, the, the display is pretty far back so you have the glass
8:40element and then you have the display element and you can kind of see how it's not, it's like
8:47almost half a centimeter within the side of the screen which is, you can see that. I can see that.
8:53again you see the shadow you shouldn't be able to see the glass and then the shadow of the display
9:02I mean imagine using like a phone like this and then like seeing the shadow of the bezel
9:08I mean this this phone doesn't even have puzzles but I digress English yeah speaker mode
9:16Let's just talk and read that.
9:23Read all the safety.
9:24I hope every time, I know back in the day, every time you boot up your head unit, you
9:28have to hit okay to use the head unit.
9:30I'm hoping you can disable that here.
9:33So, some cool things about this that Android Head Units don't have.
9:37It's HD Radio, Serious XM, and that's about it.
9:45But, let's connect this to my phone, and make sure all the speakers work.
9:50Yes, let's switch this up.
9:58And that's the model of my head unit.
10:02So, it's searching.
10:10Looks like my phone's picking it up.
10:17Now, I have like a cheap phone, this is the OnePlus 7 Pro.
10:23Match the pairing codes.
10:25So, it's making that kind of blinking sound.
10:30So it's parent it's make that kind of blinking sound I do like the interface of the display it's very
10:40It's very nice and it does have the screen protector on it right now looks like I'm gonna keep that on just cuz
10:49There's my contacts and hearing beapings is pretty reassuring and now let's go to
10:56Bluetooth audio and let's see if it tracks metadata tags and how the skip
11:02functions work. So I'm gonna go Spotify. So I do hear some audio.
11:19I guess this unit must be in demo mode because I don't know if you saw that but I'm not using
11:42Apple phone right now but this does have Apple card play so I could compare that
11:48after a while I guess if you don't do anything it automatically does that.
12:12kicking good. These are using, these are using stock speakers so be very similar to most people
12:17set up that they're going to try to go for. They're going to try to go for just an upgrade
12:21on their pioneer head to a pioneer head unit. What their stock's going to be, to get more
12:27amperage, more power to the speakers and they wake it up. I think most people in this
12:33case, they go for Android Auto Apple CarPlay because their cars don't have it and it's
12:38a great thing there it is with the the demo but let me just play it one more
13:08Front, rear, alright. You can probably see it. I'm using my finger and it sometimes is not reacting the way it should.
13:25Like that. But once you do it inside, I guess it's better.
13:38All right, that's that's looking good
13:50Sounds good
13:52Things are working so I'm pretty happy about that this thing even has Alexa
13:58Got HD radio now the radio is not plugged in right now
14:02the the wire
14:04so so it it so it and you have to buy the antenna for the radio-2 depending on
14:16your car so you have to have something like this now in this case you see how there's
14:22a blue wire that's really annoying I gotta turn it off you saw there's a blue
14:27wire this antenna gets extra power and yeah in this case we're gonna have to
14:35wire like a 12 volt to boost up the radio signal but
14:40let's just pull like it ends the radio, turn the music a little lower, then you have this bad
14:53So I don't have it powered right now you just have to tap this into like some
14:58kind of radio 12 volt or just any wire that gives a signal. So let's try HD radio
15:01or any wire that gives it some signal.
15:04So, let's try HD radio in a garage
15:07with no power boost to see how this thing goes.
15:13Different presets have different audio.
15:15I don't know if you saw that, but I was on Bluetooth,
15:17and the volume changed to radio, and it swapped over.
15:22Now, is there any way to seek this?
15:32I guess and the other UI that Android Auto has but the Android head unit has a leak like Seeker.
15:50The radio is working and yeah, it's working, so that's good.
15:59The signal's not very good because I'm in the garage and I didn't boost the signal.
16:00and I didn't boost the signal.
16:02But it works, and I'm not sure if it's showing any tags.
16:07But that's going.
16:08That's going to be more testing later.
16:15I know Kim, who owns this car, uses radio a lot.
16:20So, that's going to be, be good for her.
16:22But most people like me, they're going to use a...
16:28They're going to use Android Auto.
16:30So, we're looking at the...
16:32Remember I said there's HDMI.
16:34It's actually, this plug right here is actually the HDMI.
16:37This cable, even though it's HDMI right next to it,
16:40is the touchscreen display.
16:42So, if you want true, that looks like a micro HDMI.
16:47That'd call playing some games or something.
16:50Now, I need to hook up my USB-C cable, and the back of this USB...
16:56The back has a USB-C outlet.
17:13That was on here earlier today so we'll see, how it works so
17:19It's shown this stupid life thing like the
17:22The phone in and see how it's reading it
17:30So
17:31First thing you get is, is this is make sure your car is an eat the e-brake is on, on
17:38And it is on, but i guess
17:40our car has to be in park. Select up the 28 pin. Usually you can count the pins
17:48on the head unit and you can see what wire needs to go where. In this case
17:55looks like the 15 pins. I don't know how that's showing up but number 15 is the
18:01parking brake so it knows when it's in park. So we got to get number 15 and the
18:07way you can do that is just look at the wires in the back and you can kind of see
18:11that this gray wire is the one we need to tap into because we're just kind of
18:15facing it so we got to get some access to that 28 pin so I'm crimping
18:22the parking which is the green wire into the the parking that numbered 15
18:27I was talking about let's fire the
18:28about let's fire her up and see how what she says here all right here's the
18:34boot again so it detects my cars in parking
18:42sure right I want that I'm sure you guys in a cool angle but honestly doing
18:53what I can. So we have Android Auto Working Let's Test Spotify. Now the audio quality
19:19sounds good let me play the previous song I think
19:26think through USB it should sound better than
19:29Bluetooth could Bluetooth you've you're
19:48Now, let me go a little bit slower and see if that helps.
19:57I don't know if you guys can see the frame.
20:00I shoot my videos in 24 frames per second.
20:04I don't want you to know that the frame rate looks like 15.
20:10Scrolling seems a little better, but it's not a pleasant experience.
20:21of course.
20:23So, now let's go back to doing some more of the hard work stuff.
20:26We know that Android Auto is working.
20:28I'm really curious on how the mounting works on this,
20:31because it's just the way it's set up.
20:33So, the screen has these, these little screws right here.
20:40So, it's going to sit like this,
20:43and you have these little screws.
20:48It looks like I've actually screwed it up.
20:55Let's just screw it onto the top.
20:57So, even though I screwed these brackets,
20:59I actually did that wrong.
21:01You want to screw the brackets.
21:03These ones probably on the bottom.
21:05So, you can't screw it like that.
21:13And it just refuses to work.
21:16So, it's pretty annoying.
21:19So, there you have it.
21:23Now, now you have the screen that kind of,
21:26I guess just goes in like this.
21:32I'll just control it.
21:38I guess it won't sit the mounts right here.
21:46It's supposed to like clip in though.
21:54It's actually very stable.
21:56I'm very happy.
21:57That feels really good.
21:59Like, that's great.
22:07Now, as great as that is,
22:12I'm wondering how you can install this
22:19with the trim piece on.
22:24That's actually, that's actually like
22:31what I'm concerned because now how are you
22:33supposed to, I can't put the trim piece on now.
22:39You can detach it because it's attached here.
22:42Super solid.
22:47That's unfortunate.
22:49This design is just, I don't know,
22:52it's not good.
22:57How could you screw this on?
23:00You can't.
23:02Like, okay, you can have this in here now.
23:10Alright, so you can have it in spot.
23:16You can clear all these damn wires.
23:18You have it in spot.
23:23Alright, and I'm already running to fitment issues
23:25because the screen needs to be sticking out more.
23:30Other than, how are you supposed to put this trim piece on
23:36if everything is screwed on?
23:43I feel like they just didn't think about
23:52all the use cases.
23:54Because now like, it just won't fit.
24:00The way the BRZ sits, you have this trim.
24:03It's just too, like, it kind of slopes a little bit.
24:06And they just didn't think about that.
24:09This, I don't know, it just,
24:12if it was flat, perfect, but
24:16in what world are these things completely flat?
24:23Yeah. kind of a nightmare to install this head unit.
24:28Alright, so I have the head unit on the bottom
24:31just with no brackets.
24:33And I'm just going to try to mock fit this here.
24:37Honestly, I'm very surprised.
24:42See, imagine trying to squeeze this in here, right?
24:48It's not a good look.
24:54Unless they want you to do it like this.
25:04But then how are you supposed to bolt it?
25:10C and like now now now I can't bolt the I can't bolt the pieces it's a
25:18it's a very strange limitation
25:23I don't know if I'm making sense like okay if I have the brackets on
25:32I can't believe this is $1,000.
25:44And it's just poorly designed.
25:49That looks great, but it's not even bolted on.
25:55That's how I want it to look.
26:01Maybe sit a little bit higher like that.
26:04That looks good.
26:07Now, how am I supposed to get back to these two bolts?
26:11Like, how do it?
26:17It's just, you can't.
26:20You just can't, you can-
26:28You can't have the screen on at the same time.,
26:30time. And. Unless like you try to do... This. No, you can't. Man, this and it. Man, this unit sucks.
26:50The, the mounting hardware is just really bad. It's, like, super hard bolt on. But then you can't.
26:58The problem is this screen is way too big to fit and they the want you to bolt it on the screen
27:05Man, because then you run into issues.
27:08You can bolt in this and then slide the screen,
27:11but how are you supposed to bolt on the screen then?
27:16It's just bizarre, man, man..
27:19The way join does this is it has it on these fronts,
27:22it's just clips, and you can move the thing.
27:25So then once you've, you bolted on it, clips in.
27:28This you actually need to somehow get to the back of of this head
27:28, unit, which is important.
27:35You, I don't know what Pioneer is thinking.
27:38Kind of disappointed.
27:40Honestly, this thing is just terrible.
27:43, installing wise.
27:45I'm going to play
28:05is it go a little like this because of the way the BRZ sits.
28:10So there's a little gap that I can see, which
28:56up. It's pretty annoying. I think it goes away after a while, but it's still pretty annoying.
29:03Like what the heck. But yeah, here's the head unit. It
29:11looks like in the car. It actually looks pretty nice.. I spe. I'm not I
29:26um
29:28It's a
29:43it's really hard to install to mount depending on your car.
29:48The way the way the mounting system is, it'sa bad.
29:54Thank you guys for watching.
29:56I'll see you guys on the full review on this.
29:58Hope you guys like that kind of struggling install because it was
30:01because it was, it was the reverse
