Drop the OEM underbody trim, bolt three brackets per side to the chassis, sandwich the boards on, and torque all 24 fasteners. This 13 min guide covers the Rivian R1S (the box is labeled R1S; get the R1S version, not the R1T) with tools, parts links and the full video.

Overview

The R1S sits high, so running boards make getting in easier. John removes the factory underbody trim, mounts three brackets per side on chassis bolts, then slides the boards on and sandwiches them with washers, crush nuts and nuts. One catch: the passenger-labeled bracket angled the wrong way, so they used the driver-side bracket where it lined up.

Tools & parts

Tools

  • Breaker bar for the chassis bolts
  • Impact or ratchet
  • Included pry tool

Parts

  • Running boards (driver and passenger)
  • Three brackets per side
  • Washers, crush nuts and nuts
  • Six thick chassis bolts

Step by step

  1. 1

Remove the OEM underbody trim▶ 2:44

Remove the bolts underneath, then push the panel down and pull it out. The rear piece pops out and slides toward the back. The EVBASE instructions show this clearly.

  2. 2

Mount the brackets to the chassis▶ 4:52

Each bracket takes two chassis-mounted bolts. Align it with the holes and tighten hard, since people will be standing on it.

Tip: A breaker bar helps with the big bolts.

  3. 3

    Watch the bracket orientation▶ 5:27

The passenger-labeled bracket turned the wrong way and missed a bolt hole, so John used the driver-side bracket there instead. Go by alignment, not the labels.

  4. 4

Slide in the sandwich plates▶ 6:22

Each bracket gets a plate that sits on the board's rail system; drop it into the two holes and snug the studs.

  5. 5

    Washer, crush nut, nut▶ 8:14

Fasten each stud with a washer, crush nut and nut. That's 12 fasteners per side, 24 total.

  6. 6

Set the position and torque▶ 9:17

John placed one bracket by the door kink, one mid-door and one toward the rear. Set the board where you like it (the owner wanted it tucked in, following the body lines) and torque everything down.

  7. 7

Optional: slit the OEM plastics▶ 10:43

You could cut slits in the factory trim around the brackets for aero, but John left the OEM pieces uncut.

0:00All right guys, we got a new product coming in here from I.V. Bass.

0:04We got the Rivian right here, so what we're going to be doing is installing the rudder boards.

0:09We're going to go over the unboxing and I want to show you guys how to install it.

0:13It's packed pretty densely.

0:18It's labeled R1S, so the R1S and R1T look very similar, so make sure you go R1S.

0:30And I think that's good because I believe the R1S and the R1T, I'm not sure you'll

0:37it's the same, but the fitment will be better because this one's specifically made for the R1S.

0:43So this is the meat potato, the actual rudder board.

0:46It's packaged very well.

0:50The Runder board.

0:58Let me get it on the ground so you guys can see it.

1:03I really like that tube frame.

1:07More refined look.

1:13like this tube the way.

1:15I think it looks stronger.

1:18That's amazing.

1:21So we're going to go over the hardware.

1:23I'm pretty sure this is the hardware box.

1:27These R1Ss, they are pretty high.

1:30So you definitely one of my boards if you have, you're even like an adult size.

1:35Here's your driver side.

1:38Right here, driver side, individual package, passenger side.

1:43These are probably for the passenger rear or something like.

1:47Passenger side, another one passenger side.

1:51And then you have driver side.

1:55Hardware of a nuts and bolts, also washers.

2:01You have a prime tool.

2:03You actually have these little, I guess it comes up with the tools.

2:06So you don't need anything in particular.

2:08You just need the tools and the EV-V.

2:11I actually want to take a look look at that real quick.

2:13If they have my color pictures or not.

2:16So here in Instruction Guide, R the R1S-S

2:19shows you what you need.

2:20Everything. Everything's in color and you got the full, you got everything.

2:25So, this can save a lot of people some headings.

2:31And lastly we have these really thick bolts.

2:35Probably for some chassis mounts stuff.

2:39There's six of them.

2:41But yeah, I'm going to remove the OEM panels.

2:44I'll show you guys where the OEM panels are

2:46and we'll get you into these mounts.

2:49Alright, so the EV-1 base looks so good.

2:53New running board to what we have right here.

2:56Now you're going to have to remove the OEM trim

2:58and it's kind of hard to actually show that

3:01because it's underneath the car.

3:03So I already removed it and and actually kind of mess around with the brackets.

3:07But I can show you all the mounting holes and clips.

3:10So it would make more sense for you.

3:14So this is on the bottom of the car.

3:18I can show it to you.

3:20And I can show you the way it's clipped in.

3:22That way when you remove it, it kind of makes sense.

3:24So you want these are clipped in.

3:26So you have to actually pop it down.

3:28Like straight down and then you pull out.

3:31Okay, same with these ones I believe.

3:36These are screwed in here.

3:44So after you remove these screws on these bolts on the bottom bottom,

3:48you push it down and and you pull it out.

3:50Can't get a really good angle.

3:52Maybe I can show you some examples on their instructions actually

3:56are actually very good.

3:58So check out the EV basis instructions when you get it.

4:02But and then there's one more piece.

4:05There's one bolt on the bottom.

4:07And you just pull it out.

4:10And this one you actually if you

4:13can kind of see these little tabs.

4:15They actually kind of like this.

4:17So they pull away.

4:18This is the back of the car.

4:22The back one you pull, you pop it out and then you kind of push it to the rear.

4:28But after that, I can show you the mounting holes.

4:31And the reason why we were doing it earlier.

4:34But for some reason, their label driver side and passenger side.

4:52These big bolts going to probably use a breaker bar.

4:56And these brackets be mount to one, two, two.

5:03So there's these two bolts right here.

5:05And these are chassis mounted bolts.

5:07So they're really tight.

5:08You got to make sure you get that really tight.

5:10So the way we have this like this pretty much want to have the bracket align with the holes,

5:16holds that's why we had passenger side.

5:20For some reason when we were putting it down, it actually didn't line up very properly.

5:27So let me show you an example of that.

5:29So one of my passengers, how this bracket goes up and does a nine degree turn towards the front of the car.

5:35Well for some reason, the passenger side had it going up, but then doing nine degrees this way.

5:42And as you can tell,

5:43there is no bolt right here.

5:45That's why we use the driver side to mount it like that. about that.

5:49Same thing with the back right there.

5:51You want to make sure these two bolts one and two are mounted to this bracket.

5:58And you want to torque it right because a lot of weight people stepping,

6:03stepping on them. And then lastly, the rear of this one right here.

6:08You pretty much just play alignment.

6:10I know they're labeled, certain ways, but this is the way it works for us.

6:17And there you go. the bottom brackets.

6:22Now after you have these brackets, you're going to have to sandwich these pieces right here.

6:29So they go into right here and basically bolt on to the other side.

6:36And I can show you an example of that once we get that all mounted in.

6:40All right, so three brackets.

6:43We're going to have to have three of these sandwich things right here.

6:46So here's the first one you kind of slot it in.

6:50Again you see how it has

6:52this railing system right here.

6:54This sits on top of the railing system.

6:57So right now, now you need to go inside of it.

7:00Let me a tight fit.

7:35These we want to drop it inside these two holes.

7:51And then you tighten the screws and the bolts.

7:54All right, so finally got it in.

8:03And was able the studs really are the two little screws bolts.

8:08Makes it pretty tight.

8:10Now you can tell that these things are both on.

8:14And now we're going to put a washer.

8:16A little crush nut.

8:21And then the nut itself.

8:23Screw that on.

8:24So I'm going to do that real quick.

8:35And you pretty much do this six times.

8:38Same process.

8:45Washer, crush nut..

8:47Bracket one, I got to tighten these down of course.

8:50You really want to tighten these down because you want them to be sandwiched.

8:53These two, that makes six.

8:56Then each bracket, there's the chassis mount bolt one.

9:00And then there's the other one two.

9:04Two, four, four times three.

9:07You're looking at 12 kind of fasteners per side.

9:11So 12, 12.

9:13So you're looking at 24 bolts.

9:15And we're going to be good.

9:17You definitely want to align it specifically to how you want it.

9:21I think this is the best way we did it.

9:23One's by the kink in the door, the little crack.

9:26One's kind of the

9:34middle of this door.

9:36And the other one is towards the rear.

9:39You're looking good.

9:40Tighten these down and do the other side.

9:43And I can show you the after shots.

9:45All right.

9:46So we have a liner right now.

9:48So this is the fitment.

9:49The owner likes kind of.

9:51Tucked in more in the tuck inside and then right there in,

9:54in the rear, kind of anyhow.

9:56I want to say flaring out,

9:58but this matching with the body lines.

10:00So after you.

10:01You have it.

10:03Kind of inspect of what you want.

10:05You just go hit here and make sure you torque it down.

10:08She's impact.

10:12Make sure it's nice and tight.

10:15All right.

10:16So we are done with the R1S EV bases running boards.

10:20And I got to

10:21say they look amazing.

10:23Now this car is really high.

10:24So having these boards.

10:28They're on good too.

10:30Helps out a lot.

10:35Here's the angle of it.

10:37And I get close up.

10:39Not trying to hide anything.

10:41This thing looks great.

10:43Now what you can do with these O E M plastics

10:46is make slits in them

10:49because you can see the brackets right there

10:51and you can make little slits

10:53that should help with some of the aerodynamics

10:55maybe improve some range

10:57but you want to make sure you

10:59you want to cut it up perfectly.

11:02We might just leave

11:05I don't want to like cut up O E M pieces

11:08so depending on the owner

11:38Not too intrusive.

11:40That looks beautiful.

11:47All right.

11:48So you can see

11:49the way the sun hits it

11:51and the owner also said

11:53the previous running boards he had

11:55felt kind of tinny

11:57like going up some

11:59.

12:21All right so if you're interested in this product from EV Base

12:24I'll leave a link down below

12:26and also use my affiliate coupon code

12:28you save some money.

12:42We were having issues with the mudflaps on a different running board

12:53from that back mudflap

12:55little area right there

12:57Thank you guys for watching
