Part 1 of a Dasaita install in a 2000 BMW 3 Series (E46): what's in the box, removing the trim, the old Alpine unit and the HVAC controls, plugging in the round-pin harness and CAN bus, relocating the climate controls and the first test fit.

Part 1 of a Dasaita install in a 2000 BMW 3 Series (E46): what's in the box, removing the trim, the old Alpine unit and the HVAC controls, plugging in the round-pin harness and CAN bus, relocating the climate controls and the first test fit. This 14 min guide covers the Dasaita unit for the BMW E46 (the kit also.

Overview

John and a friend unbox and install a Dasaita head unit in a 2000 BMW E46. The box includes a CAN bus module, which passes BMW data such as which doors are open to the screen. It also has E46 and E39 harnesses (the plugs differ by model), GPS, USB, Wi-Fi and radio antenna leads, and the unit itself, which has a front microSD slot and mic. The included brackets and a small bezel smooth the transition to the dash and angle the screen for easier touch. Removal is gentle work with plastic tools, because 20-year-old BMW plastic is brittle. The trim clips are long, and the BMW tool kit in the trunk even has the sockets you need. Behind it sits the old Alpine cassette head unit, plus a plug that's probably for the CD changer. Use the round-pin E46 harness and the CAN bus. The pins didn't fully lock in this car but sat tightly enough. The HVAC controls pop out by pushing from behind and have to be relocated lower. Unclip their four harnesses and reroute them. Leave the extra USBs in the glove box for charging, a USB dash cam or a flash drive. When you install the cable lock, make sure the tab is open so the socket seats. Remove the plastic bracket and the four vent screws for clearance. The thick dash still bumped the unit, so the final trimming is in Part 2. It booted to a BMW logo, and the sound was noticeably more powerful than the stock unit.

Parts

  • Dasaita E46 head unit with brackets and bezel
  • E46 (round-pin) harness and CAN bus box
  • GPS, Wi-Fi, radio antenna and USB leads

Step by step

  1. 1

    Unbox▶ 0:00

Inside: the CAN bus box (it passes BMW data like open doors to the screen), E46 and E39 harnesses, GPS/USB/Wi-Fi/antenna accessories and the unit. It has a front microSD slot and mic.

  2. 2

    Brackets and bezel▶ 1:58

The brackets and a small bezel make the transition smooth and angle the screen for easier touch.

  3. 3

    Remove the trim slowly▶ 3:05

Work around the trim with plastic tools. Old BMW plastic gets brittle. The clips are long and pull straight out.

  4. 4

Use the BMW tool kit▶ 4:42

The roadside tool kit in the trunk has the sockets you need.

  5. 5

Plan for the HVAC controls▶ 5:13

The climate controls sit right below the radio. The hope was the new unit could clear them, but they'll need relocating.

  6. 6

Pull the old Alpine unit▶ 6:17

Use the flat side of a screwdriver to pry the lower section up, and the whole unit comes out. The extra bottom cable is probably for the CD changer.

  7. 7

Connect the round-pin harness and CAN bus▶ 7:21

Use the round-pin plug that matches the back of the car's harness and connect the CAN bus. One spare plug had no obvious use and was left unplugged.

  8. 8

    Seat the harness▶ 8:18

The pins wouldn't fully lock in this car, but they were tight enough to hold.

  9. 9

    Relocate the HVAC controls▶ 9:00

Push the HVAC module out from behind (clips only). Release its four harnesses by pushing the small tab and sliding the plug, then reroute them below.

  10. 10

    Test fit and accessories▶ 10:32

Run the extra USBs to the glove box for charging, a USB-powered dash cam or a flash drive.

  11. 11

    Open the cable-lock tab▶ 11:17

When installing the cable, make sure the locking tab is open, or the socket won't seat.

  12. 12

    Make clearance▶ 11:53

Remove the small plastic bracket, then the four corner screws holding the vents.

  13. 13

    Fitment issue▶ 12:52

The dash is thick, so the unit bumped and needed trimming (covered in Part 2).

  14. 14

    First boot▶ 13:52

It boots to a BMW logo, and the sound has much more power than the stock unit.

0:00we have a new product, Dasaita and a buddy over here helping us out. So, so this is going to be for E, is it E46? E46 what year is it? This is 2000. Okay, cool. So, we already kind of unboxed it the CAN bus. So there's information that goes through the BMW system.

0:30CAN bus showing about what doors are open stuff. We also have this

0:34thank-you card from the side that always rate your experience

0:38even if it's positive or negative definitely give a

0:41good rating. So I always like that the side of box is nice and firm and

0:44and

1:00the E46, the E46, and then we have what's this one here,

1:02E39.

1:04So depending on what make and model,

1:06their heads are slightly different.

1:08You can check that out right there.

1:10And then we have a bunch of extra harnesses. I mean,

1:14this is for not harnesses, but accessories, like GPS,

1:17USB, we aR, we have RTS, antenna, Wifi, all of that.

1:23And this is, we have the good, look a, look at that.

1:28So, let's package in this nice plastic thing,

1:30let's take that out.

1:31That's such a big difference.

1:33So we'll do a quick comparison this and the other the other one.

1:36It does have like a little screen protector,

1:37so that's?

1:38That, that's great. I mean,

1:39we're gonna take that out of obviously.

1:42It's a massive screen.

1:43You have micro SD in the front,

1:45microphone, and art comes with 16 of gigs

1:58Follow-Followed by the brackets brackets that are made

2:28It's gonna kind of fit, they had this little bezel

2:31to make it nice and smooth on this transition right here.

2:34And also because it's sticking out a little bit,

2:35out a little bit it it's easier of touch the screen and the angle will be a lot better

2:39because it's not going to be angle like this it's going to be angle more this way

2:42so

3:05right here yeah okay oh there you go it's coming out so we're just working

3:17around this trim we're going slow using a plastic tool so yeah we you can always

3:32use a prying tool plastic tools always really nice because it's

3:36the safest and these are how the tabs look like wow

3:38They're different the way they're different.

3:40Usually I usually work on like Toyotas and Japanese cars

3:43or clip designs are a lot different than that.

3:46of these.

3:48Yeah, that's good.

3:49Great and they already kind of this up.

3:51$89.99, $89..99.

3:56What's up with the prices?

3:58This whole dash is only $12.99.

4:00It's pretty cheap.

4:01Same clip design, it's freaking long..

4:04you can just pull it straight out. Oh yeah, you're trying to put it on that end. And we'll

4:20see, the screen is pretty massive. I don't think it, it's gonna block the vents, but we

4:25will give that a go to. So while we're working on, on the trim removal, you

4:31You know, we're going slow but that's, fine this is an, older car so you don't want

4:36Plastics to just snap and because you know they get brittle over time

4:42So this guy has tools in the the little roadside assistant

4:45Wow look at that

4:47Okay I know you provide you all the tools

4:51We've even told you what the heck

4:55Even comes the 1213, 10 and 8

4:58Time, 12, 13.

5:01Wow, is that an Allen key right there?

5:04That's sick, is these are Wheel Locks?

5:09But people know where your Wheel Locks are right now.

5:11We're removing this deck

5:13and something that we were talking about earlier

5:16is we have a HVAC controls right here.

5:19We can always relocate this down here

5:21but we're gonna see if hopefully

5:24this unit right here can even just power the whole thing

5:27would save us a lot of time and yeah so we'll give out ago

5:32so is this the only head unit for for this model or the BMW was there there an and

5:38upgraded model of anything or this one is the upgraded one. So the unit is seperate from the

6:08from this. And this explodes all, all those wiring. Looks like we have a radio antenna.

6:14Is that radio?

6:17This one should be radio...

6:18Yeah, this is big clips right there. We got the

6:23The two's are pretty straight forward but for this part right here it's a little bit

6:26to trickier and we're going to have to pry this part up first you use the flat

6:31side of the screwdriver while I need some technique if you pride enough just

6:42well the whole thing just comes out huh I wonder what that bottom cables for

6:48This one? Yeah. This is probably for the CD changer. Okay. So this was

6:57Alpine unit, with the cassette player, and the newer years have the Alpine unit

7:07with the CD player. Sweet. and I think they have two spots here. One of those

7:13you can buy a cable and the auxiliary connection this one doesn't have all right so we have

7:21two harnesses right here the E46 and then we have an E, 39 I think for this model right

7:28here I mean you as can see the harnesses and the back of this unit it has more of

7:32that more circular feel so we're gonna plug in the circular one and we're

7:37gonna just plug it straight straight to the back also we also need to

7:41get that the CAN bus in there CAN bus it says E39 E-46

7:48I'm just gonna plug it in there you you have it and we still have to remove

7:54of this HVAC. and this thing will just be able to slide right in.

8:02Alright so we plugged in this bad boy right here and we just had plug in. I don't know what this

8:09goes into nothing that really seems to actually make sense. So I'm gonna ignore

8:14that one for now and then we're just gonna plug straight into the harness.

8:18Plug in the harness I know this one says E39 but for the early

8:24the same plug and we're gonna push it in somehow but we did get we couldn't really

8:31really

8:31squeeze the pins in all the way couldn't get to it to lock but we the pins just aren't it just

8:46It doesn't lock all the way.

8:48It don't sit all the way, but I think they are tight enough to

8:54So, there's that.

8:56We'll the install, the AC just comes right out.

9:00Oh, yeah.

9:02We're gonna probably have to relocate it.

9:05Pop the AC out, the HVACED controls.

9:08You reach behind it and you just push.

9:10Yeah, we just push.

9:11Pretty shape for it. There's these clips right here.

9:13Nothing screwed on just these clips.

9:16four harnesses going back. You need to undo them and reroute them behind where this

9:23holder is. Yes. In order to ando these you push

9:24you push this tiny tab and you slide the

9:31back. Yeah looks like I have to relocate

9:37this. First I was hoping that the AC controls can be all

9:40So the difference is that these corners are round

9:55. I think they are around 150-200 bucks.

9:59That's a lot for this round corner.

10:02still do fit here the only downside is you have the corners you have this tiny

10:10spaces in

10:12alright so notice the little kind of fish the

10:15wires down here and then we're just going to relocate it

10:18plugging every single a plug it's for plugs right for yeah so pretty simple as

10:25far as the system you know you can't mix those with each other

10:32We're in the test. We're going to test fitment next. Make sure the head unit down here kind of it's right there. No problem. Then we

10:42we can try all the accessories like the accessories, like Wi-Fi extra USBs. So if Sir John over

10:49here wants to...map, like, put the USB's

10:52down here and have it in this glove box so

10:54he can charge his phone or he has like

10:58or two USBs or two or three USBs or three USBs and the popular thing is you can run

11:01a dash cam here and have it powered USB

11:04so you can have a dash cam, power by USB, two phones can be charged

11:08just other optionsal options or you can have a flash drive

11:12if you want

11:17When you

11:22are installing this cable make sure that this tab is in the open position.

11:29Okay.

11:30Because.

11:31Because this will also hold it and I'll you to slide the socket in.

11:34Otherwise it's not going to set.

11:36Wow, the BMW with the over engineering stuff right there.

11:41The locking mechanism.

11:42AC kind of pushed in like there.

11:43You can tell that the fitment is not 100% but you can also tell that the fitment is

11:47It's like, you know, you can spend the extra two hundred if you want to move the AC unit.

11:53And so we're also going to renew this plastic little bracket, giving us this more

11:56clearance.

11:57So these screws and screws are different than the ones I think that are starting to go in.

12:01Notice the screws are bigger, bigger.

12:09There's four screws.

12:11Just removing the top two and there's four each corner.

12:14So you notice how we removed all the screws and then this this vents is actually holding

12:44Yeah, this is how it, it looks, so we're just going to take it out, put in the new unit, cool.

12:52We are trying to get it fits. It's actually not the fitment. It looks like the

13:09the dash is a little bit thick. So we had some fitment issues right here. We

13:52Good, really good. The sound quality is just so much more like power going to the speakers

13:58now besides that stock unit. Yeah, I mean we're happy. Happy when we boot it up is BMW 2.

14:05always a nice classy touch and
