Overview
The 8th-gen Civic still drives great, but the infotainment needs work. The iDoing unit comes with the shell and color-matched, labeled wires already attached, so it's very plug-and-play. You keep your OEM brackets and clips. You get CarPlay, Android Auto, YouTube and Netflix, plus the option to add a backup camera.

Step by step
- 1
Get clearance at the shifter▶ 3:05
Key in the ON position (engine off), parking brake on, then shift into first gear so the dash panel clears. Then turn the car off.
Warning: Make sure the e-brake is set before shifting.
- 2
Pop the small panel to reach two 8mm bolts▶ 3:43
Use a plastic tool on the two notches and twist with your wrist so nothing gets damaged. Behind it are two 8mm bolts (with washers) facing outward that hold the trim.
Tip: These two 8mm bolts were the hardest part: John had to look straight up from below to see them.
- 3
Pull the upper dash and unplug▶ 4:38
Make sure there are no coins in the tray, then pull the whole top section. Unplug the HVAC, hazard button and other connectors.
Tip: If you're not sure where a plug goes, take a picture first.
- 4
Protect the dash▶ 6:03
Plastic on plastic wears a bit, but the metal bracket will scratch. Rest the unit on the shift knob while you work.
- 5
Transfer the HVAC, hazard and sensor modules▶ 6:54
Hazard: 2 bolts. Passenger airbag light: 2 bolts. Fans: 3 bolts. Move the AC controls, hazard switch and climate-control sensor to the new unit. AC knobs just pull off and clip back in.
Warning: The new unit has no spot to display the passenger airbag light, but you must still plug it in so it doesn't throw codes.
- 6
Plug in the harness and antenna▶ 8:11
The harness plugs only go in one way. Connect the radio antenna to the back (make sure it clips in), then the two wires to the new radio.
- 7
Test first▶ 9:19
Set the unit in a temporary spot and start the car. It turned on instantly and audio worked.
- 8
Learn steering-wheel controls▶ 9:53
The unit detects the change in resistance. Assign volume up/down, next and previous, and set mode (John chose Back).
- 9
Accessories▶ 11:04
Route the 3 USB cables through to the glove box. One is specifically for wired CarLink if wireless CarPlay/Android Auto isn't working. Plug in the purple power lead and the green accessory port (backup camera, RCA) for future-proofing. The blue Wi-Fi lead is the important one.
Tip: Wireless CarPlay uses Bluetooth for the initial handshake, then switches to Wi-Fi for higher bandwidth, so the Wi-Fi antenna matters.
- 10
GPS antenna and microphone▶ 12:47
Remove the little red nub and screw in the GPS antenna. The owner chose the front built-in mic instead of the external one because it looks cleaner.
- 11
Transfer the white clips▶ 14:23
Gently lift the OEM white clips off the old unit and clip them onto the new one. They clamp the unit in place.
- 12
Reinstall and check fit▶ 15:29
Put the auto-climate-control sensor back in the right hole, fish wires back and refit. John rates the gaps "passable" for an older car.
- 13
Pair and launch CarPlay▶ 16:47
Pair via the Bluetooth app using the PIN shown, then open CarLink (Z-Link) for CarPlay/Android Auto.
Wiring notes
- Plug-and-play: pre-colored and labeled harness, OEM radio antenna retained.
- Blue Wi-Fi lead is required for wireless CarPlay.
- Purple USB/power lead; green accessory port for backup camera / RCA.
- Passenger airbag indicator must stay plugged in to avoid codes.

0:00And go now this is the iDoing head unit we have the adapter that was in the small
0:06little bag so we got all those white clips transferred over and now what's up
0:23guys it's your boy John back again here with another video if you take a look at
0:28the Honda Civic 2007 now this is a very popular model when I was growing up I
0:34thought this generation was the best Civic in terms of the look I believe this
0:38is the 8th generation Civic and it's a very popular car and yeah it looks
0:44amazing we have to update it though because even though the engine and
0:49everything's still great the infotainment needs some work so today we're
0:52going to use iDoings head unit which is going to make it have CarPlay
0:56Android Auto YouTube Netflix all that good stuff and even have the option to
1:03add a reverse backup camera since this car didn't come with the backup
1:06camera at the time but let me show you the product I already had the unbox here
1:12you go now this is the iDoing head unit again if you don't know what this is
1:16is this is changes your radio essentially and it what's nice about this
1:22versus like Pioneer Sony and other manufacturers is look it already comes with
1:27the shell already comes with the wires so it's very plug-and-play user friendly
1:33in terms of installation installation friendly and look at all these everything is
1:40matched and it's already colored for you when you get this beautiful huge
1:44display it's made out of glass which is nice good quality you get the
1:51capacitive buttons and everything is molded on the back as well so you can
1:56retain your OEM brackets and all that stuff in terms of clips and what not
2:02another thing I do and does well is it's plug-and-play so some of you unplug
2:07your OEM radio and you just plug in your new radio without too many issues
2:14which is awesome because it's everything's plug-and-play and we have here is
2:20the GPS antenna this is something if you need to use for the white like
2:27Garmin Tom Tom those have this own GPS this has its own GPS as well does need to
2:32use internet or anything it has a GPS antenna and then 4G this is if you want to
2:37use cellular so if you buy a SIM card not very popular for me but others maybe in
2:44like you know in the United States that's something you want to consider this is
2:50for radio antenna which your car has and these are the ports very beautiful very
2:56simple going to be very easy to install so what I'm going to do is I'm going to
2:59cut to me removing the OEM head unit and then we'll cut back to me installing this
3:05new one so let's take it apart and move on from there okay don't turn the car on
3:11but have it on the on position and then move this to we're gonna have to move
3:17all this out so let's put this into first gear make sure it's on the e-brake
3:20no have it on and just shift into gear one to one so on then you can turn it off
3:26make sure make sure yeah we're good so this will go as clearance when we're
3:30removing it you can turn off your car now you take it out wait what happened oh
3:38you can take it out press the brakes it might not make it it might not let you take it out
3:43okay just leave like that all right so there's a little panel right here I don't
3:48know if you can see that there's a little two notches you can a little pick out
3:52we're gonna use this plastic tool so it'll prevent damaging the thing itself when you open
3:58like this it just pumps right out I like using a little punch I just like to use my wrist
4:02to twist that way I'm not damaging anything and that's this is gonna reveal two eight
4:07millimeter bolts the bolts are faced this way and that's what holds this plastic trim in
4:14oh so here's a little bolt right here you can see there's a little washer and an eight
4:20so it is an eight the only thing is it's really an awkward position so I use this little tool
4:26so you don't need this tool but we use this tool to basically grab on to the spot right here
4:31beep but um we pretty much have to just remove these panel pieces and remove the whole top
4:38and to do that make sure there's no coins in here and you should be able to just pull
4:47you can either use your hand to pull so we have that out try try to get the angle here
5:34so we're gonna pretty much remove all these plugs for the HVAC system hazard buttons
5:44if you aren't sure where it goes I highly recommend taking a picture of it
6:03be very careful especially I can read this part some plastic on plastic it does wear a little
6:08bit but metal on plastic that's gonna do some damage so be careful with the metal bracket
6:18yeah that's how I just want to have it set it on your shift knob you can use it to prevent from
6:29scratching too yeah just place it like right here yeah just place it like that one
6:42have it rest on that that was easy oh yeah then we have the HVAC one
6:54so there you go we have the head unit out it's pretty heavy but we still need to transfer
7:00the HVAC systems so we're gonna get we're gonna unscrew these four bolts the hazard has two bolts
7:07the passenger airbag light is another two bolts and then the fans are actually another three bolts
7:13so we're gonna unscrew that all right just like that I screwed in the AC the hazard
7:21and a sensor for the climb control now something that we can't have displayed in the front
7:28is the passenger airbag so make sure you plug it in so it's not throwing any codes but yeah
7:34the OEM unit does have it displayed like right here like you can see the this one there's
7:41no spot for it another thing I would like to note is when you're popping the AC unit out
7:46you're gonna have these knobs right here so I have an example right here so to pop it out it's
7:53pretty easy you just kind of pull it and it comes out to put it back in kind of just line it up
7:59and then once it's in kind of in this position right here you just clip it in that's all it takes
8:11that's it awesome all right so you just plug in this port right here you plug in this port
8:24you're pretty much golden right here they only go in one way so you don't only have to worry about
8:30anything you also have this antenna which is the radio antenna that you want to plug in to the back
8:36of this make sure it clips in nice and good and the the rest is this for the AC and that's it for
8:44the radio install it's that simple now we just plug it into the back of that the new radio
8:51and plugging in the back of this one is actually also very easy since there's only two wires
8:58this one goes to the top and then this one will go right here now I can't plug it in right
9:03now I might be able to just very little clearance because the wire is not long enough
9:13but once you plug in that you can test if your head unit works some just kind of kind of set it
9:19down a little bit and then we're going to fire up the car and check if it works so things are
9:31just kind of in the temporary spot boom instant turn on which is great it's going to be closed that
9:48and now we want to check if the sound works and I hear audio which is great
9:53here's a little beeping and to set it up there's one thing that generally people like to set up
10:00when it comes to this is hook it up to your phone which I can do but I'm going to check
10:05steering controls because some people are curious if the steering controls are going to be working
10:11so this is volume up you see how it changes when I press volume up it detects that there's a change
10:16in resistance so we're going to do volume up minus is a volume down next we're going to do
10:26next song previous song and then mode I'm going to have that to go back to your home
10:34or I'll do back I think the back's a little bit more useful so there you go now you have
10:39volume controls on the android head unit with next and skip to so everything looks good here
10:46it's a matter of plugging the rest of the accessories some fire this off to save some battery
10:53some of the accessories that I'm going to talk about is the you need to plug in certain things
10:58like the wifi cable and I'm going to go through that right now all right so the install
11:04for these usb cable ports now I have it routed so I fished it through here and then when you go
11:10in through there you can go through the glove box and you're going to have now three usb now this
11:15is great if you want to put some flash drive to watch movies but this one in particular is for
11:22CarLinks so if your wireless CarLink isn't working apple CarPlay android auto use this hard wire
11:28one and you're good also what's nice about usb's if the future in the future if the owner needs to
11:34charge multiple things or if they run a dash cam or some like that or a radar detector you got
11:42these extra power inputs and that's going to be purple and then you're going to have this kind of
11:48green one now these these little ports only fit in one way when you're plugging into the accessory
11:53port now I have someone some right now right here now this is if you want to install a backup camera
11:58which we don't have but I plugged it anyWaze just in case in the future the the owner the
12:04signs that these are for the RC jacks again nothing that we're going to be doing with those but
12:10I'm going to plug it in there just for future proofing the one one that like the important one
12:15that you need to have is this Y5 one which is blue and it plugs in right here the reason why is
12:21when you're using CarPlay it uses wireless Wi-Fi signal and it doesn't use it uses a blue
12:27tube initially the handshake and then it goes to Wi-Fi so then it has a stronger more you know
12:34higher bandwidth connection microphone the owner opposite to not use the microphone the third microphone
12:43and often to just use the microphone right here in the front I don't blame them it looks a lot cleaner
12:47so that's what we're going to do here but we'll keep it and then lastly you get the GPS antenna
12:54which you just take this little red nub off and then you just screw in the GPS antenna
13:01all right so now we are going to fish everything back um this is where it is a little bit tricky
13:07because you have to hold it in one hand while plugging it into the other that way you can
13:13not sure if you guys need a good view of that but just plug in those USBs that we're going through
13:17the glove box again these ports only fit in one way I can't really show y'all but you guys can at
13:26least hear it USB I'm plugging in that purple wire and this big old black wire the very important one
13:35that kind of controls everything we already plugged that I'm sure that earlier today
13:41and uh yeah that's it we've got the radio antenna and the USBs now we slowly fish this back
13:48and we plug in the AC unit control so you want the HVAC controller in the back that's on the bottom
13:55those are there's two plugs so don't forget it so and then we're good right here and don't
14:01forget we have the hazard light and then the sensor like uh for the client control
14:09so we just got to again you just got to kind of fish it I haven't plugged in those client control
14:14ones that work it plugged in oh and I forgot to mention that you need to transfer your clips
14:35so there's these clips up here you want to transfer your original ones our new OG head unit over
14:42two I guess I can show that real quick so to remove the OG clips you just kind of lift them gently
14:54gently because it looks like it's about the snap when it comes off and then you just put it
14:58onto your new head unit to put on your head new head unit you just just put it in like this
15:05very simple maybe if I try it with two hands but yeah you just want to clip it in
15:16there you go now it's clipped in transfer the rest of the white clips over to the new head unit
15:25so we got all those white clips transferred over now we put it in
15:29those clips are actually very important because well there's what is a using to clamp and also
15:38keep in mind of that auto climate control too make sure you put it back into the right hole
15:44when you're fishing it back so the fitment right here is amazing looking good and across across
15:57up here it's good too not the best right here let's say that's like a but if you look at the gaps
16:10here too it's also not very good too but I would say the gaps are a little bit better than this
16:17right here it is an old car so things are a little bit as you can see but the gap the main gap
16:26right here looks great right here it is passable at the bottom it is okay but yeah let's go uh
16:37fire it up and see how it goes get this fired up he's an ignition
16:47hazards work in AC crease it off non-nice so that's working perfectly fine all right so to hook it
16:59up the bluetooth if you go to the bluetooth app and then you look for this device right here
17:04with that pin number I have an android I have an apple right here so the bluetooth app is right here
17:12and once you're linked you should be golden since I'm connected to my iPhone now and uh to go
17:25to android auto and apple CarPlay you go to this thing called Z link or CarLink sorry
17:32let's see my app and then boom that show that's my Honda data so you can ignore that but there you go
17:48we got apple CarPlay in the old civic with volume controls and music skip let the rap run
18:01it tastes the owner wants to take it off but uh yeah oh I'm up volume down skip the song if you want
18:11hey yeah oh it's very fast very responsive of course you have your maps and uh your Waze
18:18I got the Chick-fil-A app of course I've got my Honda data uh Honda gang but yeah
18:25yeah that's go through the other settings right here too I have steering controls that we've already
18:35went through but look at let's look at the settings so you can see what's in it
18:39hopefully you can see I have my garage open so maybe if I put the camera like this device yet the
18:45USB general this general is generally what you want to go through because you can have a lot of
18:52different settings reverse camera we're not doing any of that let's try the headlights on I don't
18:57know if you can see that but the lights did kick on right here so it does illuminate
19:02and what that does is if you do type control you can also I just like it to have it based off
19:10of when you turn your headlights on boot volume GPX-Bix lantern is kind of cool so I'm not sure the
19:16colors of the civic but it looks like a white but you could change it to white reds now this is red
19:23oh just got karate chopped let's do white because it looks like most of the interior settings is white
19:33when you're a little bit lower steering controls navi navigation app we do have the GPS thing
19:40factory settings here's just system settings and about device if you want to know a little bit
19:46more using the android 12 build number this is using an octa-core very cool and this thing has
19:55plenty of storage as well which I don't know where to find but it's in there it's very deep
20:07the main the main reason why you would get some like this is if you want to use GPS with your
20:13apple or your android phone so if you have any of these I don't like gen apple and google has the
20:20best kind of mapping system so when you go to CarLink 2.0 and you go to google maps or whatever
20:28maps you use I don't want to show you other GPS but you get the point it's very easy to use and
20:34this is something I highly recommend anybody to do the install was fairly easy besides getting these
20:41two eight mills that require a little finding because it's kind of hard to see I had to be my
20:47head had to be like basically right here looking up so I can see where I'm unscrewing but other than that
20:53that's it
