Part 2 of the BMW E46 Dasaita install: cut the thick dash section so the unit sits flush, run three USB ports, refit the vents and trim in the right order, then the owner's verdict after daily use. This 18 min guide covers the Dasaita E46 unit; the dash section behind it had to be cut for a flush fit.
Overview
Part 2 finishes the E46 install that Part 1 couldn't seat flush. The dash is thick, so the unit bumped. The fix was to cut that area away. A Dremel is easiest, but a knife or small handsaw also works, and cutting the whole section was simpler than nibbling at it. The leftover screws aren't needed anymore, but keep them. There are three USB outputs: two share one cable and one is separate. One was routed under the shift bezel, near the handbrake, for a clean charge port. Reassembly order matters. The stereo bracket goes in first behind the dashboard, then the vents (placed but not clicked), and the trim piece goes on last. Then push it all into place. The taller screen made the trim hard to seat, so one locating pin had to be moved. Peel the screen's plastic film, because contrast jumps once it's off. The owner installed Car Launcher Pro to match the car's colors and his most-used apps. His verdict after daily driving: smooth performance at high frame rates, much clearer sound with better tone, Bluetooth, three USBs, working steering-wheel buttons (including a phone button that never worked before) and voice control. He says the 20-year-old car feels new. The only downside is that FM reception is a little weaker than the OEM radio, possibly due to the antenna cable. John notes that steering-wheel control modules alone cost $80–100 with name-brand units, and a harness adds $30–40, but this unit includes both.

Parts
- Dasaita E46 head unit (installed in Part 1)
- Three USB leads
Step by step
- 1
Why it won't sit flush▶ 0:00
The dash is thick, so the unit bumps. You'll need to cut that piece away. The steering-wheel controls already work.
- 2
Cut the dash section▶ 0:19
A Dremel is easiest. Cutting the whole piece off was simpler than trimming bits of it.
- 3
Keep the old screws▶ 1:28
These screws aren't used anymore, but keep them.
- 4
Route three USBs▶ 2:07
Two USBs come on one cable and the third is separate. The third was routed under the shift bezel, near the handbrake. Tape it first to test placement.
- 5
Mind the trim order▶ 3:17
Trim pieces go under the brackets. Put the stereo bracket in first behind the dashboard, then the vents, then the trim piece last.
- 6
Refit the vents▶ 4:16
Removing the vents doesn't take long. Place them but don't click them in yet.
- 7
Move the locating pin▶ 4:37
The taller screen made the trim hard to seat, so a pin that normally holds it was moved to make it fit.
- 8
Push everything home▶ 5:25
Bracket, vent, then trim. Push them into place until snug. The pin on the other trim holds the stereo.
- 9
Match the car's colors▶ 7:39
The stock theme is blue, so the owner installed Car Launcher Pro for a style that matches the car and more customization.
- 10
Peel the screen film▶ 8:50
Removing the plastic sheet greatly improves contrast.
- 11
Owner's verdict▶ 9:10
Smooth with no frame-rate issues. Clearer sound and tone. Bluetooth and three USBs. FM reception is a little weaker than OEM, possibly the antenna cable.
- 12
Controls▶ 12:45
All steering-wheel buttons work, including voice control and a phone button that didn't work before.
- 13
Value▶ 14:14
Name-brand units need a steering-control module ($80–100) and a harness ($30–40). Here everything is included. The extra hour was just for trimming the fit.
Wiring notes
- No new wiring beyond Part 1; three USB leads routed (two on one cable, one separate under the shift bezel)

0:00We are trying to get it fit.
0:01It's actually not the easiest fitment.
0:03It looks like the dash is a little bit thick
0:05so we had, we ran some fitment issues right here.
0:08We're going to have to like basically use a drum
0:11we'll cut this little piece right here
0:12so then it can go flush back.
0:14Because right now, it's bumping.
0:17But the steering wheel controls work
0:18if you want to show this.
0:19Hey guys, a quick update.
0:21We basically had to shade this area off
0:24to get this unit to fit.
0:25So I want to show you what we had to basically cut.
0:28What do you use to cut the dash a
0:31It's only much easier if you use a drumone tool.
0:34Okay, drumone tool.
0:35But I didn't have one with me of that time and I was worried that the dust would go all over the place.
0:43So I just used that tiny hand saw.
0:46Okay, alright, so we removed the head unit so we can a see what we trimmed.
0:51How much did you cut? Was it a bit big, right?
0:54I don't think you need to cut it all the way down.
0:58Because it's most of these parts that hit to that piece, this one can just stay on it.
1:07Yeah
1:08But it was easier to cut it all the way, because maybe if you have a drum out tool you can have a notch here and it should be good enough.
1:17Okay.
1:18But I mean there's no disadvantage in cutting them completely as well.
1:22Yeah, it looks a lot clean, you did a good job just druming it.
1:26Or then you didn't drum, you just used a hand saw.
1:28Yeah, and these screws, you won't be using them anymore.
1:33Okay.
1:33But it's good to keep them in place in case you want to put your old stereo back in later.
1:39Yeah, you don't lose any functionality there.
1:43Okay, so something else that I did was I routed the GPS antenna all the way behind Glowbox near the dashboard to the front of the windshield.
1:54Nice.
1:55It's working really well.
1:56Cool.
1:57We'll set a tape too if you want to tape it.
1:59Yeah, yeah.
2:07tape it and then there are three USB outputs
2:13outputs two of them comes in one cable and the third
2:17one comes in a separate cable I brought two cables
2:23Give it a blowbox from here.
2:27OK.
2:29yeah that's nice. two usb outputs here and then the third one i removed the the shift basil
2:30Two USB the USB outputs here and then the third one I.
2:34I removed the shift basil and put it under here and it comes out from a from here.
2:43Nice, that's super stalled.
2:45Yeah, and it stays, you know, it stays kind of in the the handbrake wood.
2:58You had the little charges right here, huh?
2:59Yeah, that's just a charge.
3:01. So, it's left really nice.
3:03Have you tried plugging your phone?
3:04I haven't yet.
3:07Cool.
3:08I mean, that's pretty much...
3:10Besides the fitment, we just have to screw it in and then put that on.
3:14on the trim piece and we.
3:16Yes.
3:17But there of course, there's a trick in fitting this and the trim piece together.
3:20What you need to do is we need to align these...
3:24Does this go under or above these?
3:28under. Oh that's was tricky. When I was mounting it I broke this by
3:30When I was mounting it, I broke this by accident, but I think it makes it easier to mount it.
3:40Yeah, stereo shouldn't sit all the way, but these records should stay behind it.
4:07very nice all right so we actually removed
4:16the vents because it wasn't having it it's not too long to remove the vents
4:20you just place them in place but don't click this yet you get your
4:31You get your trim piece and then you slide it in between.
4:37Oh, one thing you, I don't know the way that I was able to get the trim piece.
4:42It was that too.
4:46There's a pin here down here because it's kind of hard to see.
4:51This pin was screwed here.
4:55Normally, this is the pin that goes in this hole to hold it in place, but I had to unscrew this too.
5:00this hole to hold it in place yeah to hold yeah to hold it in place but I
5:05To make it fit.
5:10Yeah, because the screen is, taller making it really difficult to-
5:17You put them in place like this and then
5:20The stereo, the bracket, has to be
5:25The first one after the dashboard and then the vent
5:28And the kind of push it
5:29and the trim piece goes the last and then you kind of push it in place place as there
5:34And then you kind of push it in place.
5:37The stereo is nice and snug.
5:41And then you push the rest to put them in place.
5:53So we guided the Ducks into the back ducts right there, so it's a tight fit.
6:04Yeah, we're going to have to screw those on.
6:08We have to get this trim piece like this.
6:10So it does block some of our view, but it's the only way because once we put push it in all the way, how is a piece like.
6:17like this is going to be able to fit.
6:19So now we're just screw in the bolts.
6:21All right, so we got
6:39a pretty good snug fit around here and we're good to go.
6:47Let's get that there's that second piece right here good using laundry change that background.
7:09was.
7:20There it is.
7:21We've got the trim piece right here.
7:22It's looking good.
7:23Using a laundry.
7:38Easy to use and nice design.
7:41It's just that there's nothing else in this blue color in the car.
7:44Yeah, so I wanted to make it more suitable for the other colors in the car.
7:52So I installed a car launcher pro.
7:58It looks more like Android icons and you can have more customization options.
8:06sweet wait does that actually work it should work I think it's based on GPS sometimes it
8:24it's based off a GPS sometimes it's based off of a CAN bus
8:28yeah oh look at that it's moving it's
8:30Oh wow, that's great.
8:33It's a really good layout, you know that side and that side.
8:36It's a little carousel.
8:41I installed the apps that I used the most.
8:50All right, he's about to pop his cherry.
8:54Okay, hear that sound.
8:55Clean it looks just removing that.
9:02and just removing that like plastic sheet, it like ups the contrast so much, like it looks way clear, the colors are just, just popping
9:10Yes, so, so you've been driving around with this, kind of like half-installed, but now it's fully installed, so it looks great, great, but you've been dealing with just the performance in general
9:22What are your thoughts
9:23on on just like the head unit as far as the day-to-day because, because you had it for
9:29the weekend sound quality and stuff like that.
9:31So after I installed it, I spent like half an hour an hour to set it up, just
9:38just to install the launcher
9:42update the the apps
9:44just... just to configure the way that I'm going to use it
9:48and a meanwhile I was doing many things at the same time I was multitasking
9:53I was
10:00It was very quick.
10:04Wow, yeah.
10:05Yeah.
10:06And then it looks super silky smooth like high framerate shoes.
10:12That was one of the things that I really liked about the unit.
10:17This is a 20 year old car.
10:21Just with the head unit.
10:23I feel like I'm I'm driving a brand new car.
10:26The sound quality is much better.
10:29I have more clear sound and I got the tones much more clear.
10:31and I got the tones
10:38I have everything, I have the Bluetooth Bluetooth, I have Bluetooth, I have now three the USB outputs, the only downside is that the radio signal is a little weaker compared to the it, compared to the OEM radio, I it may be due to the antenna cable.
11:00But still I mean still it's not.
11:02It's not too
11:06Everything was plug-and-play so we didn't have to wire anything or nothing like that.
11:11So it was super easy to install.
11:13The unit is like $500 but you don't have to have an installer do it.
11:17You can do it yourself saving you like $200 or $300.
11:21You know how you have a guy do it yourself.
11:22And you usually care more about the car than some installer so you take your time.
11:28You learn learn new things.
11:29It was like just like legos.
11:31I don't need any special tools.
11:32One thing that you need is a Phillips screwdriver.
11:35Yeah that's it Phillips and a prying tool.
11:37You can even use anything like a flathead if you don't really care.
11:41But I mean the fitment is just beautiful.
11:44You can customize a lot.
11:46You like the customization because I already saw you have several laundries in here.
11:50You have the Nova which is like very very tablet-like.
11:54and then which looks good because this is kind of how the iDrive looks.
12:00iDrive has little like widgets.
12:02So on the new a BMWs that I've seen.
12:06I tried a couple launchers.
12:09I was using Nova on my phone.
12:11So I just wanted to give it a try how it looks.
12:15but at the end I really like the original launcher.
12:20Besides the colors.
12:22You see that you have individual widgets for radio, blue tool navigation
12:27and you have the buttons set up like this.
12:31You have the EQ and stuff right there.
12:33Yeah on the left hand side you have the amplifier settings.
12:37Your brightness set up and then the brightness setting and your voice control.
12:46Does that work on your phone?
12:49It prompts a command on the phone.
12:52Okay cool.
12:52Yeah.
12:53So you press it like a does a good voice.
12:58It worked this time.
12:59Yeah it's it.
13:05Yeah all the buttons, that's really important. That's like a big features
13:10Yeah, I can for I know a lot like again if you bought a pie
13:14My phone my phone button was not working before
13:18the phone the car didn the car the car didn't have a car phone
13:20but when I press this one it brings up that's it look at the, the the resolution to it's clean
13:29Pretty good the pixel density especially sitting as the way is we doing yeah, I mean you definitely brought your car to
13:30Especially sitting as far away as we're doing.
13:33Yeah I mean you definitely brought your car to.
13:36I have my emails coming here.
13:39You a got more information coming in.
13:41Yeah.
13:44So I spin most launchers I the car launcher.
13:48And in this you can set it up as if you are setting up any Android system.
13:54You can still use the widgets from the original launcher.
13:58The Bluetooth radio, etc.
14:02But I think for me it looks much clean at this way.
14:07Yeah it looks great.
14:09I think you did a great job and go ahead the steering wheel controls work.
14:13And like I was talking about earlier having steering control working is very expensive.
14:18After market you had like a pioneer Alpine.
14:32just really nice that you know, you know instead of spending a hundred bucks on still controls
14:37in a hundred bucks like 30 40 bucks trying to find the harness other than
14:41whatever it's just everything's included and it just like, you know, an hour and
14:49extra it took an extra amount of time just to get the fitment right because we
14:53we did have to trim a little bit but it wasn't hard on you can
14:56use any kind of high like we just used like a knife a little how it handsaw
15:00A little hand saw.
15:03Yeah looking good
15:04Any last comments about this unit before we head out?
15:08I really like it.
15:12I got a new car.
15:13Just look at that.
15:14It looks crazy.
15:15It probably looks insane at night.
15:17At night time it probably looks really good.
15:20Sometimes something white pops up.
15:22It lights up the whole interior.
15:24Yeah.
15:25And I think there is like I mean brightness and stuff.
15:28Have you played with the settings at all?
15:30Yeah.
15:31So you have your default Android settings here.
15:35And the brightness you can.
15:37And you use an Android phone yourself so you are very familiar with the Android platform.
15:41Okay that's great.,
15:43Can I just see these apps real quick?
15:45How do you go to these?
15:47These are mostly stock apps.
15:53I installed Torq.
15:55Do you have an OPD2 reader?
15:56Not with me, but I have yeah.
16:02And the renewal launcher I, I installed.
16:05But everything, everything else, unacceptable.
16:11, everything else came.
16:12more applications I. I might show you how to
16:16the Android-Auto and stuff like that., usually you have to a
16:19additional adapter for that, but we'll see about that.
16:22The free version, you can like mirror your
16:25phone, so ifUSA, you're watching, you have a kid in the back or
16:29the back or something like that and you want them to watch like a video, you can have it
16:32through USB and then mirror your screen watching Disney movies and
16:38on your road trip. So it's it's definitely flexible. Yeah if you guys were
16:44interested in buying this head unit you need to check the links down below E39, I'll link this
16:48this specific one. It a BMW for E. This is a WCAR E46 E39 and yeah it's a wow it
16:57looks great anyhow. He said it sounds better than O or EM so you can't
17:01He said it sounds better than OM.
17:07These are the higher end units.
17:23So this is one of the top of the lines right now.
17:25We have the PX.
17:27The PX6 processor.
17:29This one's a Hexacore.
17:31Which is actually...
17:33I know it's kind of weird, but people think Octacore is better than a Hexacore.
17:35It depends on how fast.
17:38So, this Hexacore is actually of faster than the Octacore.
17:41And then you have 4 gigs of RAM.
17:53So yeah, you got the security patches.
17:55And you have the latest version of Android.
17:57That means you'll have the the best capability.
18:01When it comes to head units and stuff like that.
18:03Or applications.
18:05Thank you guys for watching. I'll see you guys in the next one.
