Joying 10" 720p Universal Double-DIN Install in a Subaru BRZ: Unboxing, Harness, Factory Amp and Reverse Camera

Unbox and install a Joying 10" 720p universal double-DIN head unit (Intel processor, SPDIF, SIM slot) in a Subaru BRZ: pull the dash trim, match the universal harness, turn on the factory amp, and splice in the reverse trigger and backup camera.

Yes — you can install Joying on the Universal 10" double-DIN unit with a separate screen that clips onto the head unit with a 21 min DIY job. Unbox and install a Joying 10" 720p universal double-DIN head unit (Intel processor, SPDIF, SIM slot) in a Subaru BRZ: pull the dash trim, match the universal harness, turn on the factory.

Overview

John unboxes and installs a Joying 10" universal head unit with a 720p display in Kim's Subaru BRZ. Joying packs efficiently, and the color-coded wiring guides are better than a typical cheap manual. The head unit runs an Intel processor that John puts up with the PX6 among the fastest he's used, and it has SPDIF digital output, GPS and a SIM card slot for 4G LTE, so Spotify, Waze and Google Maps work without a hotspot. In the box: Wi-Fi and GPS antennas, extra screen clips, brackets, an external mic and a universal harness that you match to your car's side. The big 10" screen comes separately with good foam padding and a polished lip. Install: pry off the dash trim, remove the Phillips screws (sometimes 10 mm bolts), lay down towels and unplug the original unit. Match up the foam-wrapped plugs and click in the radio antenna, 6-pin and 28-pin. Test the bare minimum before mounting. The 720p screen is tack sharp. Turn off the key tone first. Bluetooth audio played with no bass at first because this car has a factory amp for the door speakers that wasn't switched on; make sure your amp turn-on is connected. The reverse camera was the hardest part. The harness had no matching pin for the reverse trigger, so John spliced into the factory harness for the trigger (wire 2 in this car), camera power, ground and video. Tape it up, tuck the wires, mount the screen, and drop it a little lower with the two adjustment pins. An 8" screen would fit this dash better, but the 10" 720p looks great, and Kim loves it.

  • Wi-Fi/GPS antennas, external mic and brackets (included)
  • Optional: SIM card for 4G LTE

Step by step

  1. 1

    Unbox▶ 0:30

Efficient packaging and color-coded installation guides, which matter more than you'd think.

  2. 2

    The head unit▶ 1:26

Intel processor (up there with the PX6), SPDIF digital output, GPS and a SIM card slot for 4G LTE. You can also use Google offline maps without a SIM.

  3. 3

    Accessories▶ 2:27

Wi-Fi and GPS antennas, extra screen clips, brackets, an external mic, and a universal harness that you pair with your car's side.

  4. 4

    The 10" screen▶ 3:20

It ships separately with good foam padding. The sides have a quality finish and a polished lip.

  5. 5

    Remove the dash trim▶ 5:28

Pry the trim off with a tool and pull. Then remove the exposed Phillips screws (sometimes 10 mm bolts) and lay towels down so nothing gets scratched.

  6. 6

    Unplug the original unit▶ 6:36

Unplug the antenna and every harness from the back of the factory unit.

  7. 7

    Match the plugs▶ 7:11

Match each plug to the universal harness. The radio antenna is the round one. Plug in the 6-pin and 28-pin (which depends on your car). The foam on the harness reduces rattles.

  8. 8

    Test the bare minimum▶ 8:49

Power it up before mounting anything. An 8" screen would fit this dash better, but John went with the 10" for the 720p panel.

  9. 9

    First boot▶ 10:23

The 720p screen is tack sharp. Turn off the key tone in Sound settings first.

  10. 10

Turn on the factory amp▶ 11:24

The BRZ / FR-S / 86 has a factory amp for the 6.5" door speakers. With no amp turn-on connected there's no bass. Make sure the amp is switched on.

  11. 11

    Features▶ 12:14

Wi-Fi, wallpaper, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. John pulls the extra button he doesn't use.

  12. 12

    Reverse trigger▶ 13:40

A reverse trigger wire tells the head unit the car is in reverse. Find it in your car's wiring guide. The included harness had no matching pin, so John spliced into the factory harness (wire 2 in this car).

  13. 13

Camera power, ground and video▶ 15:21

Wire camera power, ground and the video signal. This is the most technical part of the install. Once it's done, reverse shows the camera feed, and you can adjust saturation and brightness.

  14. 14

    Wrap up and mount▶ 17:04

Tape the connections, tuck everything except the main harness and radio antenna, mount the brackets and clip on the screen.

  15. 15

    Adjust the height▶ 19:05

The screen drops a little lower with two adjustment pins. Leave the car running for a while since the battery has been working the whole install.

0:00right so we have the Joying head unit right here and this is a universal head unit and what's special

0:04about this one is it's 720p so i have not seen a 720p display on the android head units

0:11now you would think that would come hand in hand but it hasn't we're going to put this massive 10

0:15in screen into a small car you guys probably know about this car it's the Subaru BRZ so

0:21we'll give you a good example example of how it's going to look on a small car of course you

0:25know you have the vents and all that stuff and

0:30gonna be really interesting let's do the unboxing right now with one hand boom

0:36drawing has always been known for its small packaging but really efficient so make good of the space you have a bunch of installation guides

0:46and what each does it's the colors because this is not like some

0:51cheap manual they actually show you colors and that's really important green

0:56car and user manual all right get to the meat and bones now this they

1:01have the display on its own little box again to keep the packaging efficient

1:06we're gonna open that in a second because that's actually the really cool part

1:10of it and now you have this one right here of course this is that might be the

1:16face of it like the real cool 720p display that I haven't seen before but

1:22then you got the regular meat and potatoes the Joying head unit

1:26With all of its guts in glory remember the

1:32unit uses an intel BASE processor one of the fastest I've seen this in the

1:35PX6 are really nice up they're really up there so I'm really the PX6 or the

1:41drawings Intel processor you can't go wrong now look at here you have the

1:46SPT DIF still which is big you have the GPS and I believe this is going to

1:52the cellular antenna on top that you also

1:58have have the SIM card slot right,

2:03so there you you, you have the slings if you

2:07want Spotify ways Google maps and other

2:11thing that requires a data

2:13connection you have that right there which is kind of cool

2:17You can also use Google offline maps too, so not you

2:21You don't need a SIM card, but it's nice that it's already there without any adapters

2:27Now moving on to the unboxing process we want to keep going

2:33The usual you have your Wi-Fi plug which is definitely or

2:38This could be the cellular

2:40this is looks like the GPS antenna extra clips for the screen to mount on as well

2:49as some brackets and a microphone an external microphone then you have a

2:55regular harness this is likes like your typical universal harness I don't know

3:00how that well that's picking up but it's kind of like you buy let's say a

3:03Toyota side or you know Chevy side or you know other side and then you're

3:08you just kind of smash the wire together that's not too bad and then you have another

3:14universal kind of thing too that if this

3:18it is.

3:20but yeah let's check out that display because the main show stopper

3:26I like it how it's labeled LCD

3:30we have the good phone

3:34always want to have the good phone no star phone please but just hook it up

3:38it up with the good foam. So we we got that going for it and then we have the

3:45extra clips which is nice. Moving on forth we have the display if I can get to

3:53it. It looks like a massive massive 10-inch display so that's gonna be

4:02alright so I had to kind of look the clips were kind of holding inside wanted to get

4:06mosti most of it out so I can keep using one hand to do most of

4:11this but yeah here's the screen now again but the join units you have a really

4:16nice I, I really like their design because the front's made a glass but this the sides are made with this kind of

4:23um like the last one was made out of metal so let's see what this one was that eight inch but it looks like

4:32, the sides, the sides are made with this kind of like the last one was made of metal so let's see what this one was at 8 inch but it looks like it looks like it's

4:35still metal. I don't know it's like a really highly quality plastic. It

4:41kind of feels like plastic but it's finished really, nicely. Then you have

4:47that polished lip. That's what I was really talking about. Oh man that looks

4:51good see if I can get you

4:55a good angle that finish all right so we have the head unit this one is a good one

5:05also put the link below but we're gonna swap this one out for the joint model

5:11B which is the screen's massive so that's gonna be interesting on how we're

5:16gonna deal these vents and so forth whether these events are gonna just

5:19remain closed and just have these vents blow whether it's gonna just

5:24up and just kind of you know filter that way and diffuse but we're just

5:28gonna see how it's gonna play out so the first thing you want to do with any

5:30so the first thing you want to do with any head unit is what how do you remove the dash

5:37get the tool and just pry this out and then start pulling pull it out

5:42I need a tool alright so we have that then generally you'll have these

5:53screws exposed so we're gonna need Philips generally sometimes it's gonna be a

5:5910 millimeter too so have your tools ready tell her to give me a screwdriver

6:05let me see what screwdriver you brought oh my gosh all right go ahead it's our

6:11and screw in the front and some towels so that when we take off the head

6:17unit it's not gonna scratch anything your car's manual you want to clutch down

6:23and put this in like you know fourth gear all right so yeah pull that that boy

6:31watch out watch those sharp brackets now

6:33you want to unscrew these all these plugs that's on the back of your original head

6:37unit the one you're replacing so let's get to that so we just implode the antenna

6:43this is like FM tuner as well as you're gonna get a bunch of unplug everything

6:52your OEM head unit's gonna have different plugs your aftermarket ones

7:00right so we remove the head unit just by unplugging everything then yeah we're

7:07gonna screw on the ground I don't know that's a good idea so these wires we're

7:11just gonna try of match them with these little jumbled up but anything

7:19with the foam pieces we'll just match into these and try

7:23to get them all plugged in and ready to go try to match them up so this one it's

7:30try to match them up

7:34This one is going to be the radio, so find something that's similar to that one.

7:39Looks like two circles.

7:40That looks good.

7:41And you match it up.

7:44Now, what's nice about these harnesses is there's foam so that should help with rattling

7:52and, you know, dampen some of that plastic on plastic sound.

7:56should just click on clicking right? Right in there. So we just plugged in the radio the

8:04so we just plugged in the radio the six pin the 28 pin which usually it depends

8:10on what car you have because remember this is a universal head unit so you try

8:15to accommodate everything all right so we have most of the main stuff in there and on

8:21on this side the only thing you have to plug in if you can hold this the

8:29the only thing you have to plug in?

8:34things actually. You want your radio to be on so that's important. Not radio but radio antenna for

8:42like FM. This is where the magic happens so you want to plug that in. This is going to be the very

8:49this might spark we'll see now for us is to see if it even turns on and you

8:58kind of want the the bare minimums to see if it works watch out these doors

9:00minimums to see if it works watch out these doors they just close chop off your leg

9:11quick we're gonna this unit is the 10 inch or whatever 10.6 11 inch or something

9:22oh man this is heavy so it is for this one right here so I just want to show you

9:29it's kind of how like wow that's that's cool surprising I'm actually kind of

9:34, I'm actually kind of sick.

9:38But a more better fitment for this car

9:44specifically? This is 8 inch. This is an 8 inch off of a different unit but this

9:50would be a size that probably gonna be better for the car. This 8 inch right

9:55here. So you have an 8 inch and then you have a 10 inch. And then you can see the

10:02difference in display size right there. So give or take. We're doing the 10

10:07inch other than because this is the one with 720p which is

10:12exciting so let's turn the car on whoa we get power that's awesome close the

10:23door so it doesn't beat so we do have the head unit and look at that 720p

10:32greatness I can definitely tell that the quality is just up there can you

10:36notice that the sharpness is

10:40it's tack sharp. One of the first things I like to do is get rid of that

10:43beeping sound

10:44and it's generally found in sound

10:48key tone off. Now with this

10:52with the join head units they're gonna have well we know volume works that's

10:56great because we just heard sound

10:57but with the with this stuff it's nice because

11:00you have its own UI so it looks very professional

11:03Yeah, maybe we should try of some songs to hook up a Bluetooth real quick.

11:09We want to test up the essentials and the essentials would definitely be one of them would be Bluetooth.

11:14Search for this thing and hopefully we will get something good.

11:24So we do have audio going off.

11:26So something that okay something with this car specifically this does have a factory amp

11:35car has a factory amp like the premium amp the Subaru WRX and no sound played if

11:41your amp wasn't of in this car if you have an 86 BRZ you know Sion whatever and

11:50maybe in your case with your like Chevy or anything these door speakers to speakers

11:55these 6.5 inches they have its own amp and right now I can tell right

11:59the there's no bass because that those amps aren't that amp so if you have

12:04have these cards make sure of all these speakers work like me if you don't

12:08have enough if you don't have bass or something that's weird you want to make sure you turn

12:12on the factory amp we want to move forward and we see all this good stuff

12:12we want to move forward and we see all this good stuff we want to hook up to Wi-Fi

12:19we can pay to probably change the background this car does this head unit

12:23does come with Android Auto Apple Car Play and a host of other things these

12:28things loaded to the Gil remember this is like cream of the crop so I like I hate this

12:32button right here so you should just take that out I don't know why it's there but I

12:37like to take that out but yeah so remember this is a huge milestone so if you're at the

12:43you're at this level and you get this far you should be very

12:45very happy but let's move on to get more accessories like Wi-Fi GPS we want to get

12:52that amp turned on because that amp is not on right now that's why the bottom

12:56speakers they like to call it subs because I don't know the bottom speakers aren't playing

13:02but the tweeters are and that's a problem you know we want some actual bass so

13:08all right something that I didn't check is the reverse camera that's obviously very important

13:15so let's check that okay so we're gonna check if the car to have your car make sure your car

13:21is on watch out your legs because the car is bagged so we have air suspension we turn the car

13:26on it lifts um as if the reverse is working I'm gonna tell you right now it's not gonna work you

13:34want to throw your car in reverse and nothing if you see something like this that means you

13:39don't even have any signal what that is is there's a there's a wire in the back of the

13:44harness that tells your car when it's in reverse so the head unit doesn't even recognize that

13:49there's anything in reverse right now now we want to have the so we have to locate the reverse wire

13:57in the back of this head unit right, right, and it says back obviously hey so we want to make it so when the

14:01It's not even why we want to, we want to make it so as in reverse and

14:07it fires a a signal to the head unit.

14:10So even if I just put like, I don't know, some kind of power right now it would say hey, the car is in reverse.

14:14As long as it gets any power you want it, you want it to turn on, right?

14:20Of course, you don't want to just have it always on.

14:22That means it's always taking, that's in reverse.

14:24So OEM harnesses in the back, you want to look at your manual on your whatever car you have,

14:29like let's say you have a key you want to look for that kind of reverse trigger

14:33wire once you find the reverse trigger wire you should be able to able to fire it up

14:39alright so the harness that I got from joining doesn't have any pins that can

14:46line up to this pin right here and long sure I'm just gonnas gonna splice into

14:51the OEM harness this is basically a 6 volts so it's telling the camera 6 volts so we're

15:01Gucci there we're gonna just wire it so the camera fires up gets power and then we also

15:08have to ground it so we're gonna have the appropriate ground on that too as long and

15:13also the reverse signal wire which is in this case gonna be this one right here so

15:18so we're gonna splice in these two wires and we're gonna be good to go.

15:21So, I have the wiring done.

15:24Let me just talk about it real quick.

15:26It's gonna depend on your car.

15:27So we have the reverse trigger on wire two.

15:30Then we have the, this is not easy.

15:35The reverse-camera part is gonna be the most technical part

15:39of the install, but long short is short

15:42because, like, honestly, I have Frankenstein right now.

15:46I have the video signal is coming out of these two wires.

15:49And these two wires, the backup camera, the review, so yeah, that the camera wires, and then

15:59you have the ground too that go with it.

16:02I pretty mush freaking sign everything, so reverse camera is not easy, but I have it

16:08working because depending on your car, you have the camera signal, you have the reverse

16:13trigger and then the camera video. So if you throw this car in reverse

16:18you're gonna now see a camera feed at which is nice

16:22that's exactly what you want to see. You can

16:27can even add like make it more saturated and stuff and brighter that's kind of

16:30cool depending on what you want to see but you can add those little like warning

16:37label things like after that the fact too so that's definitely nice and when

16:41and you throw it the reverse, it goes back to this.

16:45Yeah, that took a lot longer than I thought it would,

16:48but yeah, the reverse camera, the reverse signal,

16:51remember we did the trigger first,

16:53then we wired the the camera,

16:55and that's gonna the rear view camera,

16:58camera in, right here on the back of this of.

17:00of this unit so let's wrap it up put some brackets up of course put some electric

17:06tape kind of finalize things and then give it a the next part I'm going to go pretty fast because

17:12it's getting kind of dark so you can see we cleaned up things pretty nicely you want to tuck in all

17:18the wires in the back the only ones you need really are this main harness and then you have

17:23the radio everything else can be tucked on this side if we have the mounting things on and there's

17:29a lot of accessories so even on the back of this it looks pretty gnarly but um you know it's

17:35it is what it is um yeah so we're just gonna pop this back in there make sure your wi-fi and Gg

17:41GPS and and cellular you're whatever is n the but we're just going to

17:53you have this you want to install it with the screen offale because

17:58because the thing to way too massive and everything's bolted on there we're getting to that

18:06when i want to make sure the screen on in the correct orientation now um what you tell you can

18:14move these clips so we you can actually move these clips so we could get it to fit so if we move like

18:18we can move it at one level higher if you guys can see that if is blocking the vents but honestly

18:26it's not really so we're kind of good there just feed this ribbon cables like that um maybe you

18:36want to keep like this well it's perfect it is maybe if we moved it a millimeter down

18:42but then you'll block and block yeah i don't see look so we can we can move this whole thing down

18:50or that thing is looking like a Tesla Model 3 oh look at this screen it's beautiful

18:57and remember guys we can actually adjust this a millimeter lower but um yeah it looks good right

19:05Here I can adjust it a little bit lower with two pins.

19:08I'm gonna go down a snitch a bit lower,

19:11but man, that is looking good.

19:13I'm wrapping things up here.

19:15The head unit is looking great.

19:16I mean, jeez, I'm gonna actually just leave the car on.

19:22You definitely wanna leave your car on for a bit,

19:24so the battery, we've been working on it,

19:26and we went from pretty much,

19:29this is a, seven inch screen, which is nice.

19:30which is nice this is nice um it's a definitely a step up from the oem unit here is an seven

19:37inch this is an eight inch and then you have a 10 inch and i mean for

19:43me just having a big ass screen is just like it's just something to be had so uh i think you guys

19:49be very happy with this oh man look at that let me get some let me get some
