Yes — you can install Joying on the Joying universal double-DIN automatically rotating Android head unit (Amazon and AliExpress links in the video description) with a 24 min DIY job. Installing Joying's motorized, auto-rotating universal double-DIN Android head unit (wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, DSP, SPDIF) in a BRZ with the Toyota-style 10/6/28-pin plugs: harness, radio adapter, reverse camera wiring off.
Overview
John installs Joying's auto-rotating universal double-DIN unit, which looks like an iPad on the dash, in Kim's BRZ. The OEM unit is already out. The wiring diagram shows steering-wheel-control support, Wi-Fi, SPDIF out and lots of outputs, and Joying units are known for some of the best audio. The BRZ uses the Toyota-style 10-pin, 6-pin and 28-pin plugs, as do 2016+ Subarus. Joying's harness plugs straight in and has foam to stop rattles. If your radio reception is bad, get the separate radio antenna adapter linked below. The 28-pin carries AUX and steering-wheel controls, and the green/purple plug is the rear speakers. Without a vehicle harness you can wire it by hand: speakers, amp-on, backup, illumination (dims the screen with the headlights), key 1/2 for the steering wheel, camera in, ground and accessory. It boots fast, and there's wireless CarPlay over a direct Wi-Fi link, Android Auto through ZLink, a vivid gloss, roughly 4:3 screen, an Intel octa-core CPU, DSP/EQ, subwoofer settings and a SIM slot for 4G. For the reverse camera, he powers the camera and the reverse trigger from the reverse wire, grounds the other side, and runs the video from the last two pins of the 28-pin to a composite lead. The BRZ's sub has its own amp, so its remote-on wire needs power. The unit mounts with the OEM brackets and Joying's short screws. The OEM trim had warped and would block the screen from rotating, so it has to stick out a bit further.

Step by step
- 1
Remove the old unit▶ 0:41
This is a universal double-DIN, so removal depends on your car. Have the OEM or aftermarket unit out first.
- 2
Read the wiring diagram▶ 1:01
It supports steering-wheel controls and has Wi-Fi antennas, SPDIF and plenty of outputs. Dry-fit the unit to see how it looks.
- 3
Connect the vehicle harness▶ 1:44
Toyota-style cars (and 2016+ Subarus) have 10-pin, 6-pin and 28-pin plugs. Ignore extras like the XM radio plug. Joying's harness plugs in and has foam to stop rattles.
- 4
Radio antenna adapter▶ 2:47
If radio reception is poor, get the separate radio antenna adapter (the blue wire). It's linked in the description.
- 5
28-pin and rear speakers▶ 3:15
The 28-pin carries AUX and steering-wheel controls (no extra accessories needed on Joying units). The green/purple plug is the rear speakers (four wires).
- 6
No vehicle harness? Wire it manually▶ 4:13
Match the colors: four speakers, amp-on (turns on the factory amp), backup (camera trigger), illumination (dims with the headlights), key 1/2 (steering wheel), rear camera in, ground and accessory.
- 7
Power up▶ 5:08
It boots fast. Wireless CarPlay runs over a direct Wi-Fi link to the head unit, and Android Auto comes through ZLink.
- 8
Settings▶ 8:11
Turn off the floating ball and keypad tones, check brightness and the dimmer with the headlights, the brake wire for video in motion, steering-wheel controls and the DSP/EQ with subwoofer settings.
- 9
Specs▶ 14:17
1024-wide, roughly 4:3 screen, Intel x86 octa-core at 1.8 GHz and updatable firmware. There's a SIM slot for built-in 4G.
- 10
Wire the reverse camera▶ 15:04
The orange wire from the 28-pin is the reverse signal and powers the camera. Ground the other side, and run the video from the last two pins of the Toyota 28-pin to a composite lead.
- 11
Factory sub amp▶ 16:42
If a speaker like the BRZ's subwoofer has its own amp and isn't working, power its remote-on wire.
- 12
Mount and route▶ 17:48
Use the OEM brackets with Joying's short screws so nothing pokes into the unit. Route GPS, the radio antenna and a USB to the glove box, then click the main harness in.
- 13
Check the rotation clearance▶ 21:27
The OEM trim had warped, and if the unit sits too flush the screen hits it when rotating. Mount it a bit further out so it can rotate.
Tip: The connector pins on the rotating screen bend easily, so plug it in gently.

0:00Is that the new iPad?
0:02It's my iPad.
0:03Oh shoot, can you...
0:05I rather have an iPad than a car head unit.
0:08Really?
0:09Wait.
0:10Oh.
0:15It's not an iPad.
0:18It's not an iPad.
0:19It's not an iPad.
0:20It's not an iPad.
0:21It's not an iPad.
0:22It's not an iPad.
0:23It's not an iPad.
0:28Alright, today we're going to be doing an install on the Jo-ing automatic rotating head unit.
0:34Now, this is an awesome head unit that rotates at an unboxing on this last week.
0:39So we're going to put this into this bad boy.
0:41I already have all of the harnesses right here and I already have the head unit removed
0:47because this is a universal double din.
0:49So depending on your setup, it's going to change.
0:52So kind of have your head unit removed, your OEM, or your aftermarket, whatever
0:57then we can continue forward from here. Looking at the wiring diagram you can
1:04kind of see all the outputs right there it does have steering wheel control
1:07support it has its Wi-Fi antennas right here and it also has SBDIF then RIN
1:16bunch of outputs so you guys can want to get a good output with that.
1:20This is a join model joins are known to have one of the better better
1:24audio. It's one of the best audios actually. So it's great. We're gonna see outing!
1:31this thing. We can do a little dry fitment
1:33right. Right here you can. You can kind of see how it looks like very. Cool. Very. Awesome.
1:39and it looks pretty good.
1:42of the nexts.
1:43So we have everything dismantled.
1:44We, we have the OEM harness right here and it has, this is the Toyota style also
1:48Subaru's used this in it too, so if you have a Subaru, the newer Subaru is like
1:512016 and above, you're gonna have like this 10 pin, 6 pin and 28 pin worth of
1:57radio outlet. I know there's a little bit more cables back there, just don't worry
2:00about it, some of it's like the XM radio, we're not gonna use that stuff
2:04like anymore. We have the harnesses like right here from joining that you
2:09you's. It's nice it has a little foam just helps with the you know rattle
2:17or anything like that so to plug it
2:47If your, if you're a radios receptions really bad make sure you get the adapter the radio adapter that has a
2:54you know why you could actually buy this piece it's not really integrated see how the radios can just everything separate
3:07So this blue wire you don't really you can buy this on Amazon stuff like that
3:11You know what I'll just link it down below
3:13Want to grab that
3:15Now we have two more basically, harnesses left. We have the 28 pin. This generally controls aux.
3:21You can kind of see the aux right here and it also controls steering wheel controls.
3:26You can tell that this doesn't have serial controls, but if, if it did have that supported
3:32built in with these aftermarket joining head units, you don't have to buy any extra accessories
3:37to have serial controls works.
3:40Now if the last plug we didn plug in is this, this one right here, it's green in purple and this
3:49this controls only audio for the rear.
3:51basically rear left rear and four cables in total BAM and now we have
3:59pretty much it set up now I haven't done the backup camera or anything like that
4:05USB GPS but this will get you pretty much set and we're gonna we a, and remember if
4:13If you don't have this harness, you can have a universal harness right here, you can manually
4:18wire it, and speed.
4:20, you can have a link and navigator, you have a link and navigator, you just pretty much match
4:29with this.
4:30Rear right, rear left, front right, front left, amp cont, which is basically turns on your amp,
4:39back up, that's your backup camera.
4:41gonna have to wire it later. Illumination is when you turn on your car headlights or
4:46parking lights, does it dim the screen and stuff like that. So we're gonna have that
4:50wire too. In key two, key one, that's the steering wheel
4:54we're talking about. We have the rear view camera in which we're gonna take care of
4:59too then we have the ground and accessories. So we have everything kind
5:03of mock up right now. So let's fire it up.
5:08hopefully it turns on boom we got the join in yo check out that it's interesting the
5:21the logo is kind of like multicolored gradient got white blue and purple so we
5:29You want to care set this down?
5:33Plug in the radio.
5:35Oh, that was a fast boot up so this definitely boots up very fat.
5:42pronounced and then that's gonna be this this does have apple car play which
5:59shakes and then there's a direct Wi-fi
6:01access tos to your head unit and
6:05and you'll have everything streaming through
6:07Wi-Fi it's an insane setup I love Apple CarPlay Wireless
6:11and then we have
6:13and then we have the Android Auto which we're going to check out in a bit
6:15so let's go kind test things out
6:17and kind of see it has the tone thing going on right
6:25look at that you do it try it press that middle button not the button but the
6:32icon we live in here in 2019 what do you think of this this is like the
6:44it's the colors are so vibrant and like we came from a matte screen to a
6:50gloss screen but the colors are just insane on this right.
6:54Looking good.
7:20even narrower you can definitely still have your vents going on right there that's so cool
7:26that's like the ultimate flux you know you you're on instagram now you
7:29like instagram in your home so i can't wait to see how android auto apple
7:35carplay and stuff like that work man these things
7:38showing you doing doing like the big boy stuff right now
7:42that's awesome man this tesla needs this
7:47I just like doing that. Holy crap.
7:51What's this? Volume. Yeah, you have some dedicated buttons right there. Look at that bird. So
7:58Joying's showing off its processor. Joying's processors, they use Intel-based stuff,
8:03so you can kind of see the 3D rendering. It's really smooth. You get that nice
8:07depth of field look going on. And, of course, you can change your launcher if you want.
8:11Let's go through settings. So we have the settings are a little bit different from what
8:15What we used to see how Kim probably deals
8:17with settings all the time.
8:18This is more, you can tell it's more integrated.
8:21It looks less like Android and more kind of like,
8:25more intuitive.
8:27So we have settings for you, you know, display.
8:31Yeah, let's get rid of this little ball thing.
8:33I don't really like this ball thing.
8:35Settings, whatever, we'll get rid of that ball thing later.
8:41I don't like that.
8:45Is there a dedicated back button? Yeah it does get the brightness level. You get the brightness
8:51and of light like in the morning. In the morning and then when you get the dimmer switch on. Can you turn that dimmer switch on real quick?
8:55Your headlights. Yeah so it lights up right there and then it dim a,
9:02turn off. Cool. So we have those things right there. Applications. Press any key to start.
9:11Brake wire for a video in motion.
9:16Very cool, GPS light.
9:19This thing, this, so this is the lights for your dimmer.
9:24or your dimmer home, the
9:30home button.
9:31We got steering wheel controls, oops.
9:32And we, we have current apps, very cool.
9:35let's go change out the tone. I'm not a fan of having keypad tones so it's
9:39kind of loud and kind of annoying. We'll check out audio quality in a bit.
9:45We're for is subwoofersing the EQ. The DSP model so you're gonna have
9:50awesome sound quality. So yeah. I really like this new drawing interface. It's
9:57again they've really stepped it up before it looked pretty tacky but a
10:03now looks very well like refined okay they have a password I don't
10:10password, I guess one two six, no so dive deep or do some more
10:16and research and then we have date and accessibility.
10:20Very cool
10:22So let's get
10:24Let's, let's get a USB, USB plugged into this.
10:26and hopefully we can send us some audio using Android Auto.
10:32Be of careful.
10:34This also has its built-in if you want to have a SIM card to have Wi-Fi
10:39This is drawing head. Unit has it so you can listen basically, you know, cellular all
11:15a little bit lower, let's turn it off, let's go back so because of
11:33the interface is a little bit it's not full screen by any means so
11:45just very interesting very interesting the screen check out the screen
11:51quality it's it's really
11:52really nice because the aspect ratio is more 4 by 3 not 16 by 9 it and it does have that
11:59extra oomph because it basically you have that little thing right there and yeah so let's
12:08to rotate this bad boy. Let's see how Andrew,
12:38So we plug it in, see, no response this time, and how do we go to apps, where where's,?
12:52Z link
13:00the Z-Link, it's waiting, connecting, so there you go, you have it, pretty cool.
13:05This is a huge thing going on.
13:08I heard, with the new Updates, Android Reloaded and you the whole screen.
13:23So we're going to, have to wait for the next update.
13:26The great thing about this is you can always get updates and stuff like that.
13:30So when we get the full launcher where it takes the whole thing, we're going to have that.
13:35But I like this interface because here you can actually see these buttons right here, which
13:41makes it nice.
13:42Nice.
13:43Let's see if what happens if I do this.
13:45Boom.
13:46So that's cool.
13:48The thing is it doesn't, I wonder if we can remap that button to be this one because
13:52the home is kind of cool but I kind of like it having like this.
13:57We'll see.
13:59Whoo, that's awesome. So we have Android Auto and stuff like that.
14:171024 by 707708. So 700p kind of in a way. The aspect ratio is more by it's it's
14:26more squared off which I don't mind. And then you have an Intel x86 octa core
14:301.8 you get the MCU version with the Bluetooth all that can version unknown
14:36stuff like that. And these things are updateable so they have that going
14:41for it. Oh I don't want to show you guys that. Alright cool. Cool. So let me let me
14:51wrap this up. Kind of make it look a little bit better and we'll see kind of
14:56how it looks like fully installed. Alright
14:58Alright so we
15:04It's gonna be a 28 pin. You need to have a group you need to basically tell you the head unit to turn on the
15:11The reverse camera and that's a bit of the spec back one right here
15:15So this orange wire this orange wire plugs in and this is basically power
15:20So in my case, I'm giving it you can kind of see the twist tie job. Yeah, it is what it is
15:25But that's how I I do these installs. So it's quick. I'm not soldering because I'd go through head units so quickly
15:31this one gives the power
15:35to the camera and it also tells the camera to put it into reverse so gives
15:39the gives the camera the back of camera power and tells the camera to tell us
15:46the head unit to turn on the reverse then on this side right here I have the
15:53other side it's powered through ground so I have hit it up through around then
15:58I also have this cable right here, which is gonna be the video signal. You can kind of see the pin
16:06So this is gonna only apply to you if you have a Toyota and it's certain to you at that
16:10We have these two ones at the very end of this 28 pin and then I have that going out to I made a little
16:18little, little wire right here to a
16:22Composite cable, and so that's how it works and everything works
16:26so let's just kind of neatly tuck everything back there and
16:31Kim Kimberly right here is working on the mounts so we have two mounts each. We're using the OEM brackets
16:38so specks.
16:39Yeah, we're just using small adjustments like that
16:42I also want to tell you guys if you have issues with certain sounds
16:46not working so in this case this car has a
16:49a subwoofer right here and it gets its own amplification so the head unit powers all
16:56the speakers like the tweeters up here the back speakers but this particular one
17:00right here this particular one right here does not get power through this head
17:07so it has its own amplifier and to turn on the amplifier it's gonna be located in this car
17:19that's a remote on switch so Kim has this the switches right there we also have
17:28the Wi-Fi cable we need a hookup we need to have the and then we have the
17:38microphone and GPS and an extension for the USB so we're going to put that on
17:45right now, and finish it up. So we're tightening these
17:50brackets. These are the OEM ones. You see how they get kind of messed up after a while,
17:55especially if you do a hundred installs like me on the same DRZ.
17:58Joyeen actually provides their own little screws screws, which is really nice
18:03because they're short and they fit perfectly. That way, you're not having
18:09long screws that poke into the head unit. So yeah, we're gonna just tie
18:14number here and and finish up the install and things up here so we have the GPS
18:19we're not going to use the 4G antennas because we don't
18:22have the SIM cards plugged in but we have the antennas here if we decide, decide
18:27it to and we're just kind of finish it off by plugging it in and also there's
18:34a radio so that's the only thing we had to plug it in we have a USB that
18:40It's routed over there to the glove box so we can use we have an extra one right here
18:44Which we're not using and then the microphone. We're not gonna plug in because it's just
18:51So we have the antenna
18:54For radio signal and then there's
18:57There's a big harness that has everything and this literally does everything at this point
19:02plug that in
19:04Make sure it clicks in because it's the most important thing and
19:38We still have the trim piece we need to put on so we got to do that and now I'm
19:43wondering how the heck
19:46Oh you remove.
19:48We have to remove this thing.
19:49So to remove it.
19:51There's a little clip here. and release,
20:08Give you a backing plate right here if you want a nice clean install
20:14something like this goes in here.
20:18Listen, I'm just gonna to not not for the
20:23the sake of my install.
20:24Boom. Good fit man.
20:29Now we're just gonna screw in these screws right here.
20:34Now this one's a different, for an install this one's on the easier side to
20:41to install because everything is pretty well laid out my previous the 13 inch one
20:50I did was on the hard or side the
21:06the smalls side of the
21:11I feel like these Philips ones are really easy to work with especially if you take them in and
21:19out and you have the two on the bottom that you can install too. Then we have the trim
21:27piece right here. Now this is the Toyota trim piece that we bought except even OEM
21:41quality is getting warped over time. Oh, they're nice fitting in there. We do have it sit sit,
21:49we could make it sit more flush but at that point you're gonna run into like hit, I don't know how
21:55it's gonna rotate. So we're gonna have to see because if it rotates I feel like it might hit
22:02the thing actually. I'm kind of worried worried about that. So we might have to make it stick
22:11out even a little bit further so it can rotate. Now we're plugging this IDE cable. It's a really
22:25type fit. Watch out for these pins because they've bent easily. So its it's. Fit-, it
22:55be able to rotate.
23:00Yeah, it's not gonna be able to rotate.
23:03So
23:13, a board.
23:15Guys, so we have the head unit installed.
23:17, it's definitely a awesome one.
23:19I mean, check this out.
23:23Is that not cool?
