Joying Universal Android Head Unit with SPDIF Output: Install, CarPlay / Android Auto Test and Setup

John installs a Joying universal Android unit (Intel 8-core, DSP, 4G LTE, coax SPDIF digital output): pull the trim and old radio, use Joying's pre-wired car harness, test-boot out of the box, mount it with the old brackets and set the RGB button lights.

Yes — you can install Joying on the Universal unit; needs a harness for your car (Joying sells pre-wired ones; the Toyota/Subaru universal harness is linked below) with a 10 min DIY job. John installs a Joying universal Android unit (Intel 8-core, DSP, 4G LTE, coax SPDIF digital output): pull the trim and old radio, use Joying's pre-wired car harness.

Overview

The big deal with this Joying unit, per John's description, is the coaxial SPDIF digital output. At the time only Intel-based units had it, and name-brand head units with digital output cost $2,000 or more. It also has an Intel 8-core chip, DSP and 4G LTE. On John's car the trim is held by clips (some cars use Phillips screws) and has the A/C, hazard button and a small screen attached, so pop those out first, unplug everything, and pull the old radio out without hitting the shift knob. Rest the new unit on a towel. One port on the back is for the SIM/cellular antenna. Joying sells a harness pre-wired for your car, so there's no splicing. It has foam on the plugs to prevent rattles, a capped reverse camera input and the amp lead. The radio antenna, the 10-pin main plug (front speakers, power, dimmer) and the 8-pin go in, then the IDE-style ribbon cable lines up with a notch. Test-boot before mounting. It worked right away, and CarPlay and Android Auto worked out of the box. Turn off the loud key tone in settings. John bolted the unit in with his old radio's brackets. The screen is big without covering the vents, and the button lights are RGB with a color-cycle mode. The links from the video description are below.

0:00What up guys do an Android head unit install and it's gonna be dope because it's the new join a lot of people like to have a

0:10Universal because it applies to more people. So I'm gonna put the universal head unit on to here

0:15This one is specifically tailored for the WRX, but let's go to the universal side boys. Shall we?

0:27All right to remove the head unit. It's pretty simple

0:30Simple, most of the time it's just held

0:33, for this make a model.

0:35Other times it's held by Philips screws, so consult your own manual to see on how to

0:40remove your own head unit.

0:42And generally there's things also plugged into the trim, such as the AC, and we also

0:47have like the hazard and this one has a little screen up here.

0:50So we're going to take care of that too.

0:53You just have to be crafty.

0:55I like to pop this button out first

0:57and then take it out that way.

1:00There's gonna be a wires in the back of this head unit

1:03Unplug everything you see that's pretty self-explanatory

1:06So, um, yeah

1:08Once you have unplugged everything slowly remove it make sure you don't hit your shift knob or anything like that

1:14And that reveals all the plugs right here

1:18And I know it looks like a mess

1:21um, honestly, it is a mess, but um

1:24That's not gonna matter too much because as long as it doesn't rattle most of this stuff

1:29It's gonna be so compact that you're not gonna hear any noises. So here is the unit

1:32any noises.

1:33So here is the unit, let's put back the little towel

1:37just for safety, have it rest on top of that.

1:41Now you can see the back.

1:43Now in my unboxing videos, I wasn't too sure about this-

1:46but someone said this is the wifi app adapters

1:50and this is actually going to be the signal

1:52for the SIM card if you're going to do cellular. So that's really neat. Thank you. Helping out the channel. But yeah, check that out. Kind of going something like that. Now, you definitely have to think about the the trim pieces. So I'm going to use my OEM trim and hopefully I can get it. So it's mapped out accordingly to plan because you could you should be able to use your

2:02Check that. Oh, it's gonna go in something like that

2:08Now you definitely have to think about

2:11The trim pieces so I'm gonna use my OEM trim and hopefully I can get it

2:17it's mapped out

2:18According to plan because you could you should be use your general

2:22You know your your hardware to bolt this bad boy on right here

2:26And then you'll be able to fit into the the right location

2:30But before I like to bolt things on

2:33I'm gonna test and make sure the unit works out of the box because it'd be a hassle if it does it

2:38To do that you just need the you need to wire your own harness

2:42This one is from join them cells. So they pre wire it for you for your specific car

2:47I had to buy this separately links down below if you're looking to buy it separately

2:52but instead of having a buying a

2:55Universal to you a universal adapter for like any heads like for your make-and-model and then you basically spice all the universal stuff

3:00and you basically spice all the universal stuff.

3:04Joy makes it already and it's really nice because I haven't seen many manufacturers

3:10have foam on their plugs. This will definitely help prevent any kind of rattling

3:16So it's much much appreciated that they added that capability.

3:20Now, it also has a rear a view camera in, if you guys can see

3:24that. And look at this, they have it all,

3:27capped out super nice. And they have the appropriate step down.

3:30They had the appropriate step down and if you. And if you were gonna have I guess this one would be your amp

3:36So I'm just gonna plug that bad bad boy in right here

3:39make sure it's in

3:44And then for you you're depending on your make and model you have I want to plug it in directly

3:51And now we're gonna plug in the newer the new stuff

3:55So, this is for the radio antennae

3:58Generally the radio antennae has this little flap thing right here

4:01This for Toyota subrew

4:07This is your main plug that connects everything is your 10 pin that controls the front speakers power dimmer switch

4:14Etc. Etc. This 8 pin right here. Let's see you can just it. It's just like matching up legos. It's super simple. It's super simple

4:23So we find the 8 one. we plug it in this is generally your rear speakers

4:29Then this 28 pin generally deals with steering-wheel controls

4:33It's gonna different from it's not a different from the make and model even make it model in years so not all cars are the same

4:46Now I could plug in the GPS and the other outputs right here

4:51But I'm not gonna get to that specifically you right now because I just want to see if it works

4:58You kind of crammed your stuff. Remember, this is just a test test for us now

5:01test rock now this is an IDE cable which is interesting because generally use the

5:06use it for like hard drives floppy drives and disk drives on a computer but make

5:12sure it lines up so that definitely doesn't line up because there's a little

5:15notch right here you just want to match it up hey and look at that success so we

5:22did get to boot make sure you guys can kind of see the screen at least we did

5:26get it to boot and which is

5:32Wow the screen looks really nice

5:38There's volume which is also nice and

5:41Wow the processor

5:43I don't know what it is, but this bokeh like blur effects as then you have like and this trees actually 3d it looks

5:51really

5:53Nice now that beeping sound is kind of annoying. So let's go to settings and turn that off

5:58You should be able to oh they don't have like the traditional Android so they have like

6:00like the traditional Android so they have like,

6:03this is like very similar to,

6:05to like the iDoing head unit that I did.

6:08It has its own like UI.

6:11We have loud key tone.

6:13Let's turn that off.

6:13We don't need that.

6:14And let's test some music.

6:16Make sure it works and stuff.

6:18This is awesome.

6:19Wow, it looks great.

6:21It looks great.

6:22Playing something that is a huge selling point

6:24of some units is Android Auto.

6:27So I definitely wanna check out Android Auto the car

6:29and look at that, it does work.

6:31So right out of the box, you get Android Auto

6:33and you get Apple CarPlay,

6:35which it is a big, a big, big selling point.

6:38Trust me guys, when you guys driving around,

6:41let's say you want, I always use like ways

6:43and I'm like driving to work and commuting.

6:45It's the interface is so good.

6:47I don't ever have to really look at my phone.

6:49If I get text messages, it shows all of that.

6:51So definitely don't sleep on Android Auto

6:53Apple CarPlay. Wow that was loud. Sorry about that. And so I have the brackets that were on

7:14Just it just wants to go right here

7:17It's probably because there's a little dimples, but you kind of just place it and you're like, okay

7:21It's like, okay probably gonna be right this spot so you can use your Philips head and you can put it like right here

7:26I'm gonna be right here. Oh

7:28I basically have it all the brackets in and I know you just kind of just

7:36Slowly bring it back make sure the. Harness is plugged in and you should be set golden

7:43Look at that

7:45Look at that. It's just

7:48Stay tuned. I'm gonna wrap it up and I'll show you how it looks. Oh

7:53This is in looking good

7:56Of course you you guys can see

7:59Just tap snapped in right there and I have the ribbon cable kind of snaked in there. Oh

8:01and I have the ribbon cable kind of snaked in there.

8:07Oh, the screen.

8:08The screen is like,, I think this is like the right size

8:11for a universal head unit.

8:13Not too big, so it does not cover the vents.

8:16A lot of people have issues with it covering the vents,

8:18but this one, it is just big enough.

8:21And you don't even generally need those little borders

8:24that make your head unit look ugly.

8:26You know what I'm saying?

8:27When you get a universal head unit,

8:28and you have like these little covers,

8:30if you want it to cover it up,

8:33I guess you can cover it up a little bit more

8:36but I don't think you need it.

8:37Oh my God.

8:38You're always stuck in my head, you know I can't forget it, I try to move on but you're

9:05don't want that.

9:06So let me get this right.

9:08music so your head doesn't explode and kill us all.

9:12So let's work!

9:21Steering with little controls, um lantern, uh, this is your dimmer switch, let's change

9:27it to, oh it's RGB, that's great guys, RGB action right here, let me zoom in so you

9:32guys can kind of see a little bit better, let me zoom in a little bit more so you

9:36can see even better. Yeah buddy look at that. So you get the RGB you can turn

9:43whatever color you want. Green, blue, teal, white, but it's kind of like blue

9:49really. It's like a sky blue. This is like a teal. This is like more like a

9:54whitish blue or it's like a neon green, red, purple. Obviously the colors are

10:00you can kind. See, you can kind of see a little bit better. Let me zoom in a little bit more so you can see a little bit better. Yeah buddy look at that. So you

10:01can see what you're going to do or it's red, green, and blue because those are the RGB colors and you can have it loop to if you guys like the little loop cycle where it goes on the

10:12I'm gonna stick with red because that's my interior
