Pull the IS trim and four 10mm bolts, swap the bracket, plug in the iDoing harness, CAN bus and OBD2 reverse lead, and keep the factory CD player, climate display and backup camera. This 15 min guide covers the iDoing Android head unit for the Lexus IS 350 / 250 / 200 (2005–2012 per the video title) with tools, parts.
Overview
John and a friend put an iDoing head unit into a 2006 Lexus IS 350 whose factory screen had stopped displaying. The trim comes off by hand and with a hook tool, and the factory unit is held by two 10mm bolts on top and two on the bottom. The new unit mounts to the factory bracket after you remove the screws holding the old head unit to it, and the original CD player pushes out of its clips (they get brittle with age, so go carefully). Wiring is the hard part: the IS uses the lower part of the factory unit for audio, so the kit uses several Y-splitters, a "back video"/"cam" lead for the reverse camera, a big harness (including a TPMS plug), a CAN bus box for climate-control display and stereo controls, and an OBD2 lead with two pins that supplies the reverse trigger. They add the Wi-Fi and GPS antennas. Everything works: AC, reverse camera, steering-wheel volume, door-open and hazard info, wireless Android Auto (tested with a OnePlus 9 Pro) and wireless CarPlay. The factory CD player still works through the new interface, and the button lighting color is adjustable. The trim color is close but not a perfect match, and the top edge sits slightly proud of one trim piece.

Step by step
- 1
Pull the trim▶ 0:54
Work the trim loose with your fingers first, then a hook tool. On John's car the dealer had replaced the dash, so one piece needed extra care to get out.
- 2
Remove four 10mm bolts▶ 2:04
There are two 10mm bolts on top and two on the bottom, set a little toward the inside.
- 3
Pull the factory unit▶ 2:30
Break it loose and push down on the clip to give yourself room to work, then pull the whole unit out.
- 4
Test fit first▶ 3:22
Before you move the bracket over, hold the iDoing unit in place and test it. It should sit well in the dash.
Tip: Make sure everything works before you do all the bracket work.
- 5
Swap the bracket▶ 3:54
Unscrew every screw holding the old unit to the bracket on both sides and pop the bracket off.
- 6
Separate the CD player▶ 4:16
Push the original CD player toward the front of the car to release it from its tabs. Lift slightly as you push to clear the little notches. It takes some force.
Warning: The plastic clips get brittle on older cars, so push carefully.
- 7
Connect the reverse camera▶ 5:25
The leads labeled "back video" and "cam" give you the reverse camera.
- 8
Connect the audio harness▶ 5:38
The IS routes audio through the bottom half of the factory unit, so the kit uses several Y-splitters to get audio across. The big harness also has a tire-pressure (TPMS) plug. One lead plugs into the bottom of the CD player's port.
- 9
Plug in the CAN bus▶ 7:33
The CAN bus box gives you the stereo controls and shows the climate-control changes on the screen. Plug in both ends, then the last two Y-splitters.
- 10
Antennas▶ 7:59
Plug in the Wi-Fi antenna, and screw on the GPS antenna in case you want built-in navigation.
- 11
No reverse signal? Use the OBD2 lead▶ 8:12
If the camera doesn't come on in reverse, the kit includes an OBD2 plug. Plug the two-pin lead into the harness and the plug into the car's OBD2 port, and it provides the reverse trigger.
- 12
Reinstall the trim▶ 9:44
Put the trim pieces back. The color is close but not a perfect match, and the top edge isn't perfectly flush on one trim piece; trimming it could help.
- 13
Check the features▶ 10:34
Door-open and hazard info show up from the CAN bus, climate control displays on screen (switchable from Celsius in settings), the reverse camera works straight away and the steering-wheel volume works.
- 14
Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto▶ 11:22
Both are wireless. Android Auto connected wirelessly to a OnePlus 9 Pro; apps like Waze, Spotify and Pandora show up automatically. CarPlay and Android Auto live in the Car Link app.
- 15
Unique features▶ 12:18
The factory CD player still works through the new interface, you now have two volume/tuning knobs, and the button lighting color is adjustable. Reverse mutes the audio by default; you can turn that off in the general settings.

0:01One is your boy John today. We're gonna do a Lexus. This is my first Lexus. Lexus is 350
0:32believes, believes a 2006. Now, this is how the interior looks right there. Boom. You can
0:39see the head unit. Now, this head unit actually, it doesn't work anymore from the factory.
0:44screen to stop displaying so we're gonna upgrade it to the iDoing head unit
0:48and stick around I'll show you how to remove and install that is
0:51and install
0:52Nice
0:54So you can try this up a little bit with your finger and
1:29uh-huh
1:35Oh, yeah, you can kind of see it
1:37Go so you have to pull those down wheels down
1:39I think it gets stuck it stuck down, but this one the dealer broke mine. So it don't stay down
1:45But they replaced my dash you know, uh, then now I gotta hold it and uh somehow
1:50Yank it out because you know
1:53Get locked up. Oh nice
1:56I just use this hook
2:04Very cool. Oh yeah, there's two 10s right there.
2:14Two 10s on top, two 10s on the bottom. So it's a little more towards the inside.
2:30I broke it loose it gives you more room to work the side to use my key
2:44just push it down man
2:54just push it down man
3:06Rain pull and hopefully nothing
3:11Do that's a big boy
3:22All right, so this is the iDoing head unit obviously
3:27We just removed the OEM one right there now you're gonna have to take out a lot of those screws
3:34So you can mount this one onto the new bracket
3:38Now before we do that I think we should test fit it make sure everything works
3:42before we do all that work. So it's gonna probably sit something like this right
3:48here you can kind of see the basic shape. It's gonna have good fit mint.
3:54All right so we didn't record us taking the bracket off because that was a
4:00little bit confusing at first. So you just pretty much unscrew this one this
4:07one this one and these two and maybe there's a basically you remove all the
4:12ones that are hanging up to the bracket and you pop that off right there do it
4:16to both sides and then after that you to remove the original head unit from the...
4:24CD player you just push it you push it towards the car so you see we're at
4:28where we were doing that you just push it straight out and you can see
4:31tabs and it actually requires some force so you gotta push it and you gotta pray
4:36those clips don't break because you know the older the car gets plastic is a
4:40little brittle but you can see how the clips are so you want to push it
4:44ideally lift it up a little bit and then push it that way you can clear these
4:48little notches right there but after that we can take the we're gonna need
4:54this so we need some audio on the new one now I'll show you how everything
4:59those hooked up right now.
5:00We have some plugs in right now, but we want to just go through everything before we show
5:05it off.
5:06Alright guys, so we actually got it to work, AC works, reverse camera, the audio, everything
5:14works and let me tell you how, because this Lexus unit is not easy to read, it looks
5:21like a rat's nest and let the let me try to break it down for you.
5:25Now we have one wire right here. this basically nothing these are plugged in
5:30and
5:31this of,
5:32this is called this cable called the back video and this one called cam so that gives you the
5:38reverse camera all right now this wire right here controls all the audio functions so
5:55why it's so crazy is because it has to use the bottom half of the Lexus and
6:00therefore it's gonna need a lot of Y splitting kind of things to get audio
6:06off of the aux channel so you plug that in and let's just see what's plugging
6:12from the back because it probably make more sense from the this side right
6:15here so you have this big harness this one is for your tire pressure which
6:20we're going to plug in this one now this is a lot of wire and that's it then you see
6:45these big wires right here from the bottom you want to plug basically we have three wires
6:55coming out of these plugs right here. I know it's kind of hard to read, but trust me, it
6:59is really difficult for me to explain it because there's so much stuff going on. But you have
7:25clearance to show you and plug it in. So that one plugs into the bottom of the CD port.
7:30of the head unit and after you plug all that in there is one more thing you need
7:35to look for there's this CAN bus now this will give you stereo controls this
7:40will give you display when it comes to your climate control and so when you hit
7:44the climate control it shows up on the Android head unit so there's that so
7:45plug in each end right there boom and boom and then yeah you plug it you
7:54plug those last two Y-splittings right there as far as what's coming out of
7:59this one this one is your Wi-Fi antenna so we have it right there and then we
8:03have this plugged in but nothing is actually
8:06plugged into here it's just like this lastly the only thing that we really
8:14need to do talk about left is there is if you don't get reverse signal so when
8:19you throw your car in reverse and it does not work we have an OBD2 plug
8:23that is included so you'll see this black wire here we have it plugged in
8:30with two pins. Then you plug that into the bottom of your car and these two pins will
8:39give you reverse trigger which will turnp your car into reverse mode when you throw this
8:45into reverse, activating your camera and it works. We're glad that's there. The only
8:53thing we're going to add is we're going to screw on a GPS antenna just in case we
8:59want to use the built-in for whatever reason, but we have that and you just, you
9:06just pretty much screwed up this on right here and we're set. So that's it when it
9:16comes to wiring I know it is very confusing but let me tell you that how
9:21we did it and how we pretty much went through it. We pretty much just kind
9:25of plug in as much things as possible and that
9:29That the head unit works, but those are the key wires you need to plug in. Reverse camera, audio,
9:36and then you have to marry it to the bottom of the head unit to get it to work. And we
9:41have every functionality working. Alright everyone, this is the full install of the
9:47head unit. You want to put these trim pieces back on and make it look a little pretty.
9:52Alright everyone, we are done with the Android head unit for the Lexus IS 350 2006. Now,
9:57Now, when it comes to the color finish...
10:00right here, it looks like it matches close enough.,
10:03you can see there is not a perfect match,
10:05maybe because this the great overtime
10:06or just the color match isn't,
10:08but honestly it's not an eyesore,
10:10it's not like a black matte trim or anything
10:12like you would see normally.
10:13Now, when it comes to the top fit mitt right here,
10:17we did have a little issue right here.
10:19You can see how there's a, it's not terrible,
10:21but it's not like super mount flush right here.
10:25It's flush on every other corner
10:26besides that trim piece.
10:27I think maybe we could the,
10:29trim piece out a little bit more, but that's how it looks like right there let's
10:34see when you open the door it says the door open on both sides which is great
10:39it has, it has that CAN bus information, hazards, you don't know if you guys can see that or hear it
10:44it's clicking, it's turning on, we have the climate control too, you can move
10:52this up and down, right now it's on Celsius, I think in the settings you
10:55can change it, there's so so many things when it comes to the Android
10:57where you can change and I don't know if you can hear that or feel it, of course, of course you can't feel, but it's
11:04blowing cold, AC is working great. Did you want to demonstrate that? Reverse camera, boom! Reverse
11:11camera is working straight out of the box so you can put it in park and volume up and down on
11:17the steering wheel controls, boom! So that all the CAN bus, all the data stuff
11:22stuff is working. In terms of wireless and connectivity it does have Apple Car Play Wireless
11:28and Android Auto Wireless. Right now we're using a OnePlus 8 Pro or 9 Pro, the OnePlus 9 Pro
11:37and it's working wirelessly. Android Auto it's beautiful. If you guys haven't seen how
11:43this is how Android Auto looks like on that. You have your Maps, if you install Waze.
11:49So any application you install on your phone will show up here.
11:51So if you had ways on his phone or teams or other applications, it'll show up here.
11:57So Pandora, Spotify will all be displayed here.
12:02And here's just the iDoing interface.
12:04You can't swipe or left the app drawers right here.
12:06You can go through apps.
12:08So we had car link.
12:09That's where Android Auto lives and Apple CarPlay.
12:12You have other settings right here.
12:15And let me just go over some of the unique features about this head unit.
12:18it still retains the CD player you can actually still use the CD player if you
12:25go into this settings and it will work through this interface so it's
12:30You can actually see the tracks moving, and see the tuning knob works right here, so, which
12:40is interesting.
12:41So right now in this car, you have two tuning knobs.
12:44You have this one right here, and then you also have this one right here.
12:47So depends on what you address, because now it's kind of like separated, but it's
12:50built in, so it's a little bit of confusing.
12:53But yeah, you have two tuning knobs now, or volume knobs.
12:58As far as other settings go, let me just go over the system settings if you guys are interested
13:02in seeing the device info.
13:04That's some barcode stuff about the device.
13:0910. This one is using CPU and 8 core CPU which is it's fast snappy and yeah Bluetooth the
13:16latest Bluetooth and pretty much there's a lot of there's a lot of information on
13:22this in terms of all these things you can do can you actually turn on your
13:28headlights to see if it changes dims so when you turn on your headlights did you
13:32notice how the screen dims a little bit you might the camera but it does show
13:35here and then these lights right here light a up and you can adjust that
13:40set these settings right here and right here so if you want to be it to be red
13:43white-green I don't know the Lexus colors but generally you can
13:48it to fit anything you want when it comes to mute so when
13:54he threw it in reverse it actually mutes the audio in the general
13:57settings you can turn that off because some people want to throw it
13:59in reverse and not have their music lowered that's up to you but
14:03It's there if you need it. There's a lot
14:26the most time consuming part of this adventure we're still gonna leave the
14:30screen protector just so we can mess with the alignment a little bit more and
14:35a other than that that's it thank you guys for watching if you guys were
14:40interested in this product links down in the description below and don't forget
