iDoing Android Head Unit: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X (2010–2016) Install

Pop the clip-on trim, pull the old radio, plug in the iDoing harness and CAN bus, move the vents and hazard panel, then tap the reverse wire for the backup camera.

Yes — you can install iDoing on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 10, 2010–2016 with a 16 min DIY job. Pop the clip-on trim, pull the old radio, plug in the iDoing harness and CAN bus, move the vents and hazard panel, then tap the reverse wire for the backup camera.

Overview

John replaces a six-year-old aftermarket radio with no CarPlay in an Evo X with an iDoing Android head unit. The trim is held by clips, the iDoing harness and CAN bus plug in, and the vents and hazard/airbag panel move over from the old unit. He taps the reverse wire so the car's aftermarket backup camera works, programs the steering-wheel controls, and tests wireless CarPlay. He rates the fit 9 out of 10 and says the IPS screen is far more vibrant than the old one, though it's still glossy.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Lift the lower trim▶ 1:18

Use a pry tool or your hands to lift the bottom trim piece. It's held only by clips, including two at the back. Put it somewhere safe.

  2. 2

    Remove the radio surround▶ 1:50

The next piece comes off the same way. Pull it slowly, then unplug the A/C and other connectors behind it.

  3. 3

    Factory radio: four bolts▶ 2:26

This car had an aftermarket unit. John's guess for the factory unit: remove the bottom trim (and possibly the top trim) to reveal four bolts, then unscrew them and the unit pops out.

  4. 4

Plug in the iDoing harness▶ 3:12

The iDoing harness is much tidier than the old aftermarket wiring. Plug in the main harness, the front in/out plug and the small CAN bus, then test before going further. It supports wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.

  5. 5

    Move the vents▶ 4:09

Pop the vents out of the old unit by pushing from the bottom so the whole vent comes out. Install them on the new unit in reverse, lining up two clips on top and two on the bottom.

  6. 6

    Check the vent shutters▶ 5:06

Make sure the vents work: turned fully one way the shutters should close completely. Loose or detached vanes can mess up the adjustment over time.

  7. 7

    Transfer the hazard panel▶ 5:51

The lower panel holds the hazard and airbag lights. Unscrew it, move it to the new unit using the guide pegs, and screw it in.

Warning: Don't overtighten. It's plastic. Use hand tools or a very light setting on a driver.

  8. 8

    Connect the accessories▶ 8:10

Screw on the Wi-Fi and GPS antennas and connect the microphone. With CarPlay or Android Auto you don't strictly need the mic or GPS, since they use your phone. There are also extra USB, SIM, subwoofer and SPDIF connections.

  9. 9

    CarLink cable▶ 9:49

Connect the CarPlay / Android Auto cable (CarLink). John says wireless has worked great for him on these head units.

  10. 10

    Tap the reverse wire▶ 10:29

For the backup camera, tap the reverse signal. On this Evo X it was a wire wrapped with blue tape. John secured the tap with electrical tape.

  11. 11

    Transfer the mounting clips▶ 10:54

Move the three clips on each side to the new unit. They're what really hold it in, because the OEM unit was bolted in. Then tidy everything up.

Tip: John had to shave one clip for a good fit. Make sure the vents still work.

  12. 12

    Steering-wheel controls▶ 11:57

Hold a steering-wheel button, then tap the matching on-screen button to assign it (previous, volume up, volume down and so on).

  13. 13

    Test everything▶ 12:24

Check the stereo controls, the dimmer (it even dims the maps in Android Auto) and the reverse camera. You can change camera settings such as muting sound in reverse.

  14. 14

    Wireless CarPlay▶ 14:15

With an iPhone 14, CarLink 2.0 does a handshake and connects wirelessly. John rates the fit 9/10. The top could be trimmed more with a Dremel, but he didn't think it was necessary.

0:00What's up, guys? It's your boy John. Today we're gonna be, we're gonna be doing an iDoing head unit in a

0:08Mitsubishi Evolution 10 front lip just got damaged yesterday unfortunately, but this thing is

0:15Great, it's a very skin and all so when we're replacing this really crappy unit. That's already in there

0:21That's been there for six years. No carplay nothing like that replace it with the powerful iDoing head unit

0:27Which I mean you can actually see the difference in screen quality. Just from it just being off

0:32So he's not having a huge upgrade. What that means is better viewing angles and all that jazz. So I am overexposed

0:39So yeah, stay tuned

0:43Alright, so we are inside the evolution 10 super beautiful interior the nice paddles

0:50Dual clutch twin clutch. I guess that is a little clutch, I'm not too sure about these cars

0:55But look at this it is

0:58Not too bad with this head unit, but the owner says it's kind of crappy

1:02So we're gonna be replacing it notice that the shroud is different

1:06Then I actually have the head unit

1:09It came in two boxes. I guess maybe for packaging, but we would have to just screw in the original head unit

1:18Alright, so we are just gonna be using a pry tool or your hands to lift up the bottom part

1:26So this whole trim piece is just held by clips

1:31I don't know if you can see that and here are the back clips so there's two right here to

1:37Some more down here

1:40Put that somewhere safe. I'm gonna put it in the back seat and

1:50Looks like

1:51This might be bolted on or held by clips as well

1:59so this whole thing comes off and

2:07There's gonna be a bunch of wires

2:09You're gonna have to unplug it

2:11So slowly remove that and I'll show you the back so

2:16Remove the AC and I just unplugged all this stuff right here. It might be a little bit different

2:23If I would have to guess

2:26The OEM head unit because I don't have the OEHM here. You remove that bottom trim

2:32remove a potentially top trim and that would reveal these these

2:38Four bolts one two three four and you unscrew that that will pop out

2:45Other than that you just wow it is the wiring is

2:58Unfortunately, this is an aftermarket install so there's a lot of trash. I would say

3:04Look at all this stuff

3:06It's going through it

3:10I don't even know what this is

3:12All right, so I've plugged in

3:20This one so the iDoing harness comes with this which is so much better looking than the other one

3:27I'm gonna plug it in here

3:30We're gonna plug in the next one here. It's like there's a front in and out and

3:40little can bus as well as the main harness

3:45So

3:47Plug that in

3:49Right

3:51It could be it wireless car play and Android Auto, which is a must for me

4:09All right now that we've verified that it works what I'm gonna do is transfer the vents and this piece right here

4:22to

4:23Part to work its magic. So I'm gonna set this as sign

4:30And then bring back the old head unit over here

4:37And we're just gonna pop these bad boys out

4:40Yeah, should be relatively easy

4:45They are these two, but you actually want to hit it from the bottom

4:48That way you get the whole vent

4:51After that you transfer it to the new one

4:55Which is pretty much?

4:57You do it in reverse

4:59So here it is here

5:01And we want to line up the clips there's two right here and two on the bottom

5:06So line her up. All right, something that I figured out that might something you guys might not want to overlook is

5:21Make sure the vents are functioning properly because they can get detached steering or get loose over time

5:26That could mess up with the adjustment notice how when I do all the way left

5:30That's good and all the way right should be shut the the shutters should be fully shut

5:37Same with this side you guys can see it

5:40It's fully shut and then to the right right shouldn't be fully shut, but pushing it here. So there you go

5:47Make sure those operations are good

5:51Now the next thing I need to do

5:54Is we need to transfer this climate control

5:59Actually, it's not even climate control. It's just the climate control on the bottom

6:03It's an H not HVAC, but the hazard airbag lights and that's it. So we'll just kind of use a

6:14Screwdriver I like to call these Phillips, but correct me if I'm wrong. I've always called these Phillips

6:21Somebody in the comments slain to me saying like those aren't Phillips head screwdriver screws

6:27But they're a plus. I mean you tell me

6:30Okay, I'm gonna still call it Phillips

6:32because maybe

6:34You know

6:42Not to be ignorant

6:43Just what they're called

6:46So we transferred this bad boy over there. There are some guiding

6:58Pigs right here. So you just make sure

7:03Now you don't want to screw it in too tight because it is plastic and

7:12good

7:13So you can use hand tools

7:17Or just be very careful just like quarter quarter press on this tool

7:25Was enough so there you have it. It is in

7:42So that's the back

7:46Now there's one thing that I did notice that this does have an aftermarket backup

7:51backup camera

7:53And it does look kind of wonky. I mean look at this, right?

7:56So we'll try to get a backup camera functionality working on this

8:04Probably have to talk to the owner as well

8:10Besides that backup camera. We're gonna hook up all these other accessories to it

8:15GPS antenna

8:18Microphone now you don't really need the microphone or GPS antenna if you kind of use. Use on the android auto or apple

8:24Carplay because it uses your own

8:33Reader in some extra usp

8:36So if you want a hotspot, here's the Wi-Fi

8:42Or more SIM card stuff

8:47Subwoofer usb's

8:49Wi-Fi again, and this is a microphone input

8:55So I am going to screw in

8:59This little bad boy right here and that is going to go into the Wi-Fi portion

9:07oops

9:11So right here you want to screw it in this unit also is equipped with the sp

9:22DIF

9:23Which is super nice

9:25And I am going to screw in the GPS

9:32Onto this one, and it's the same process. You just kind of screw in you screw the GPS one in there

9:44the

9:49Apple Carplay and Android Auto

9:52Cable it's called cable link

9:55Gotta have that

9:57Now wireless has worked great for me

10:00On these head units, I actually have a accurate NSX over there

10:05Who?

10:06It's wired only and it takes forever

10:24So in this case, it'd be number five

10:29All right, I actually got the reverse wire

10:32Hooked up to this one right here

10:34So you can you can actually tap into it. I just had like this right now

10:37I think I'm just going to electric tape it and then call it

10:40That's if you want to reverse signal for your evo 10

10:44It's going to be it used to be wrapped with this blue wire

10:48Little tape

10:54All right, so I transferred these clips right here one two three

11:00One two three on the other side. It's actually very important and then transfer those clips because

11:05The so it's just on the back of this one. You can see that's where it used to be

11:09Uh, that's, what really holds it in it holds it very well

11:12The reason why it's important for me is of the OEM one used to be bolted on so, um, you want these

11:18Definitely, you have these so they're being held

11:22But after that just tidy everything up

11:32So I had to shave this clip for the fit to be good on this

11:37The only way we'll fit make sure the vents work

11:57All right, so I'm just gonna set up the

12:01Back up our previous volume up volume down

12:05You just hold the button down and then you press the actual touchscreen button

12:12So it would be

12:20Now volume up and down works great

12:24All right, we are in the evo 10 and we are on

13:00So everything works

13:02Stereo controls, snacks, forward

13:07Dimmer check the dimmer if it works, of course

13:10Oh, I like how it even dims the maps at least in android auto

13:14The customer does have an apple so I might be getting some fun of that

13:18Reverse camera

13:21Boom

13:23Amazing

13:25And you can set up the settings for that too if you want it to have no sound or

13:31Anything like that

13:33What else can I show you touch screens great?

13:36I

13:37Can show you the specs of the machine this is iDoing's latest and greatest

13:41Uh, there's car link and car bit link too, which is awesome

13:45Let me just show you the system settings is device

14:00Good focus of that

14:03Plenty of storage

14:05And we have the usb's on the side if you want that the user wants to do that the customer

14:11My friend

14:13and just overall

14:15Yeah, all right, so we have a iphone

14:2013

14:22and we 14 sorry

14:24we got the island okay

14:26And uh, we are getting car play. So we're using car link 2.0

14:30It's gonna do a little handshake and it should connect

14:34wireless

14:37Should it's the first time it's doing it. So

14:40Let's see all right that concludes it if you're interested in this head unit

14:49Links down below and where you can find it. I think it looks great fit me

14:53I would say it's like nine out of 10

14:55It fits great right here kind of matches the interior thankfully doesn't look too crazy the top

15:01You could get this clip more

15:03Dremel to make it fit better, but I really didn't think it was necessary

15:09And it's clipped in all over here. I think it looks pretty good

15:12Screen quality is definitely better than the previous one

15:16It's still still glossy. So you'll see reflections, but at least it has better colors like the colors are actually

15:22Super vibrant. It uses an IPS display. So you have great viewing angles and it's like punchy the colors are really sharp

15:29Like I mean on the camera it looks really good
