iDoing 10.25" Ultrawide Double-DIN Android Head Unit: Scion tC Install

John and his buddy Jason swap a Scion tC's aftermarket stereo for iDoing's 10.25" ultrawide (1280×480) PX5 double-DIN. They move the OEM brackets over, re-plug the existing harness, reverse camera and amp lead, and program the steering-wheel buttons. CarPlay comes from an add-on box.

Yes — you can install iDoing on the Universal double-DIN chassis: fits any car with a double-DIN opening and the correct vehicle harness with a 20 min DIY job. John and his buddy Jason swap a Scion tC's aftermarket stereo for iDoing's 10.25" ultrawide (1280×480) PX5 double-DIN. They move the OEM brackets over, re-plug the existing harness, reverse camera and.

Overview

Jason's Scion tC already had an aftermarket stereo that had worked fine for a year, but he wanted iDoing's ultrawide 10.25-inch unit. It has a glossy, phone-like screen, no physical buttons and a 1280×480 resolution. The back has USBs, AV, sub outs, GPS and mic, and a clip-on GPS antenna instead of a screw-on one. They also bought the car harness and an add-on box for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Removal: take the frame off, pull the old unit, remove the four 10mm bolts holding the OEM brackets, and unplug everything (harness, USB adapter, dash cam, mic, camera). The aftermarket reverse camera gets power from a red wire. Keep the amp-turn-on wire connected so the subwoofers still work. Bench-test first: it cold-booted, the audio had no noise floor, and the system shows the PX5 with 4GB of RAM. Remove the tilt friction pieces to swap on the OEM brackets. The reverse camera was already on the 28-pin harness, pin G covers mic and camera, and the screen's ribbon cable makes the fit a little tight. The finished unit looks like a 2019 car with a Model 3 feel and great contrast. Out of the box Android Auto wouldn't connect on their test phone. Bluetooth pairs with PIN 0000. The button illumination doesn't light up, though the screen dims.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Unbox the ultrawide unit▶ 0:57

A wide, glossy, button-free screen. The bezel slips behind the trim for a cleaner install. Inside: PX5, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage (per John), plus USB, AV, sub out, GPS and mic leads.

  2. 2

    Extras you may want▶ 2:36

An add-on box provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a vehicle harness makes the install plug-and-play.

  3. 3

    Pull the old unit▶ 3:13

Take the frame off and slide the old head unit out. Four 10mm bolts hold the OEM brackets to it. Remove them.

  4. 4

    Unplug and label▶ 4:04

Unplug the GPS, backup camera, antenna, mic, USB adapter and the dash cam. The aftermarket camera gets power from a small red wire.

  5. 5

    Keep the amp turn-on▶ 6:08

Make sure the amp turn-on wire is connected so the subwoofers still work, and connect the steering-wheel-control leads.

  6. 6

    Bench-test▶ 6:20

Plug the new harness into the new unit and fire up the car. Let the first cold boot finish. Audio had no background noise.

  7. 7

    Check the specs▶ 8:02

Settings show the PX5, 1280×480 ultrawide resolution, Android 9.0 and 4GB RAM.

  8. 8

    Swap the brackets▶ 9:24

Pull the friction pieces on both sides that hold the tilt function, then fit the OEM brackets from the old unit.

Tip: Use a plastic tool. A metal one can scratch the unit.

  9. 9

    Sort the harnesses▶ 10:19

There's a harness for camera and mic, another for aux, DVR and video, and RCAs for video out and subs, plus three USBs and the universal harness. The GPS antenna clips into a socket instead of screwing on.

  10. 10

    Reverse camera▶ 11:55

Labels on the plugs show what's what (G is mic/camera). In this car the reverse camera was already on the 28-pin harness. Your install may differ.

  11. 11

    Refit with the frame▶ 13:08

Fit the frame and trim, feeding the wires through. Seating it may take two hands.

  12. 12

    Program the steering-wheel controls▶ 14:47

Assign each steering-wheel button, save, then peel off the screen film.

  13. 13

    Know the quirks▶ 16:55

The screen dims with the lights, but the buttons don't illuminate. Android Auto wouldn't connect out of the box in their test.

  14. 14

    Pair Bluetooth▶ 17:28

Search for the iDoing device and use PIN 0000. Then play music from the Bluetooth app.

  15. 15

    Watch your vents▶ 19:01

It's wide, so in some dashes it can crowd the AC vents or climate controls. Most dashes are fine.

0:10So we have everything wired up. We have the reverse insane. So colorful

0:15Guys we are here with Jason why don't you introduce yourself? Who you are? What's up? I'm Jason the owner of this tc

0:28Well, it's like unit right here. Okay. I've had it for like a year. I had no hic. I

0:34But let's replace it with the iDoing and see if it's we got iDoing we got iDoing up in

0:44So this one foam is this it's just foam bro come on. It's the good fall. All right

0:51You got your manner right here, and then you got your oh

0:54Oh

0:57So this is what really intrige to me. It's a wide head unit

1:02and I don't know but it looks dope, right?

1:07This looked out

1:11Yeah, got that nice it really looks sleek

1:15At the you know, you have a loss finish, you know the new phones have the gloss finish

1:20Yeah, it's this is more modern and not today's standard. There's no one. There's no buttons. Are you gonna miss that

1:27I really use these buns right here. I use more of the steering wheel wheel controls or the touchscreen

1:32So I'm not really that mad about that. But Yeah, I'm really excited

1:39about how this looks because

1:43Ultra-wide on some like Android auto. I've never seen before so I'm really excited to experience that

1:50All right, this is a px5 with four gigs of ram for those

1:5532 gig wrong

1:57We got the little bells right there. So basically that slips into the behind of this

2:02So you get that cleaner install. So this basically sits right here all the screen pops up. So when you look behind the screen

2:08Yeah, it is a sliger

2:11Yeah more cables John's more technical with this

2:15So with this car we actually have an after market reverse camera. So we're

2:23We're going to use all of these plug this up. This is USBs, ABNs, subwoofer outs, as well

2:28as GPS, microphones, all this goodness we're going to use. So the main thing is the reverse

2:31All all this goodness. We're gonna use so we can

2:35Main thing is the reverse camera

2:38What's this? So this is I also have this an extra accessory

2:43This is so it allows you to have Android auto and apple car play

2:46And we can even have wireless apple car, but for Android auto. We don't get wireless apple

2:50And then you just got a mic and then more bees

2:54So yeah, I also bought the harness for here. So this harness is gonna make it

2:58So it's easy for this to your install. So with this Bucks

3:00So- So with this, with this,

3:03it's gonna make it easy to install.

3:04With this box it's gonna have Apple CarPlay.

3:08That's really good.

3:10We love some Apple CarPlay.

3:11And,,,, yeah, let's go get with the

3:13uninstall how do you how do you why do we do this you got to yeah take this off

3:19take the frame off and then just let it just take it out and then there's a

3:30little plug right here are you are you we're already done oh no we have four

3:39we have four 10 millimeters holding this OEM bracket to the head unit so all right

3:45you have a wrench? yes I have a have a socket and ratchet

3:53alright this guy can not handle the heat right now

3:59okay what's up with the back of this stuff? you gonna unplug it or something? yeah you gonna

4:00Okay, what's what's up? What's up with the back of this stuff get unplugged or something? Yeah, you're gonna plug all this

4:06right here. I think this is the

4:08GPS right here. Yeah, this is the back of camera. This is actually the

4:13Antenna for the radio and then this is the mic, right? Yeah

4:18This is for the Android auto right here

4:21Or the

4:24Ter, socket and then what's this for us bees or some?

4:30That's the dash cam dash cam. Okay, that's the only thing plugged into this

4:39Should be cool. Here it is

4:45It's really hot shoot

4:49Got that good big heat sink

4:52Cool, let's put that in the back. Let's transfer those O

4:58We're going to use

4:59We're gonna reuse the OEM brackets for this

5:03brackets and then were going to

5:10Alright, so the first thing we want to do is check out this wire.

5:14Hello, we're going to unplug all the old harnesses out of this.

5:19So we have the old harness that we used for the previous head unit.

5:27This is going to be a similar step for any car.

5:29So whatever you're doing for universal stuff, you're going to have something like this too.

5:37This is the

5:40USB adapter we use that way we can use

5:43The built-in one right here. So, yeah, we're just gonna unplug everything and then we're gonna move forward

5:50So we have everything unplugged

5:53Everything is unplugged here and then we have the

5:58Reverse camera. These are an aftermarket one so it gets power through this little red wire and

6:01So it gets power through this little red wire.

6:05and yeah we're just gonna have to move forward from here

6:08make sure the amp wire turns on the amp

6:12that way these little subwoofers work and then

6:15stereo controls too we'll see how that works new harness plugged in right here

6:20um obviously we don't have the reverse camera plugged in and all that stuff

6:23right now the first of the first thing I want to do is test a head unit make

6:26sure it works so we have the power plugged in

6:29and stuff like that so here's the head unit we're gonna plug into the

6:33back of this one. Panzo. So this is how it's kind of kind of sits. This is just of course a test

6:43fit. We can remove, we can put this trimming and stuff like that, but look it doesn't really look

6:48like it affects it too much. Actually it's pretty sick. Let's fire up the car.

7:05Oh yes, so it's loading that's a big milestone having it turned on is a great milestone guys

7:12So this we're gonna do the cold boot of course. This is the first time we ever plugged it in and

7:16I mean if you unplug it

7:18It's gonna have to be in because what you unplugged the whole system we're gonna keep this on for now

7:23So if not scratch this beautiful screen this this I I love the finish in here

7:27It actually looks really nice you can pair those two like OEM head units and

7:30head units and you're just blown away. Geez, that thing is freaking wide. Alright.

7:35Oof. O. So what software is there running on?

7:40This. This is just, um, let's check some stuff in here. We have a little settings right here.

7:52We have audio which is like half the battle and listen to that. No noise. That's actually

7:57really big and it might be a small thing but having a little like a floor of

8:02synths like a ceiling floor sound is just nuts so we have the PX5 right here so

8:08the resolution is 1280 by 480 so it it's like really wide it's like

8:13an ultra wide Android 9.0 so it's the latest one and then you have all this

8:19MCU without the core 1.5 this he does get an upgrade and performance he

8:24He has four gigs, so it has multi-tasking.

8:26It's gonna.

8:27It's gonna be better.

8:28It'll be just smoother.

8:29Honestly, the processor on these are just so fast.

8:30It doesn't really matter too much,

8:33unless you're playing games on this.

8:35PUBG mobile and stuff like that.

8:39So.

8:40AutoKid, I never seen this before.

8:42I did buy the additional adapter right here.

8:45So we might have to give this a plug-in.

8:47I never seen anything like this before.

8:49So this is what's supposed to give me Apple CarPlay.

8:52I mean, look, look at this.

8:53It's bizarre.

8:54This might be a wireless chip to allow a wireless Apple CarPlay.

8:59K-Box thing right here, but before we do that, I mean we just, it just plugs into one

9:01But before we do that, I mean we just just go it just plugs into one of these things in the back

9:08Before we do that. We're gonna just make sure the fitment is a

9:11, Prime so there's little tabs that you pull on you see this

9:17You loosen the screw and then you pull these tabs out. You might need a flathead screw driver soon

9:22Little tab right here. Be careful. Obviously. I'm actually using a metal tool

9:26So you don't want to scratch it. You see how it just kind of pulls out

9:29This kind of holds it securely together. So this parts with this friction pre-piece holds the tilt function

9:36There's one on both sides. So just remove both. Alright, so it's just held down with this IDE cable

9:42Which is kind of funny IDE cable to hold something like that. It's pretty interesting

9:46And then we're, we're putting the new brackets in here and these are the OEM brackets that were on the original head unit so

9:51Very cool

9:54Oh and this is the back of this beautiful thing, check this out, that's how the tilt

10:00function works and then you have that ID cable. It is in that cave makes it kind of

10:06hard to put it in there but it's not too bad honestly. This ultra wide looks

10:12amazing. Now we're looking at the harnesses I didn't plug in the K box we

10:16have the mounting brackets in there looks like the fitment is really good.

10:19cam and microphone we're gonna need that for the reverse camera so I'm trying

10:24to find the reverse camera right now this is site video video and stuff like

10:31that let's put it to the side we have another harness ox DVR video and stuff

10:40like that next off we have RCA more video out there's there's just so

10:48So many video outs, subwoofers, stuff like that, USB's, there's three of them, we have

10:59the harness, this is the universal harness that it comes with, I

11:04Here it goes

11:06pretty cool

11:08and then we have

11:10Already has the Wi-Fi antenna plugged in and then this is the GPS antenna

11:18They have it like a socket style. So it's a lot more secure

11:22Can just suck it like this. Is this magnet? It's just adhesive

11:32So yeah, it's clipped on instead of screwed on now.

11:37So that's really cool.

11:40Which one is the backup camera?

11:44That's there's just so many RCA, front camera, could be this sight video.

11:52So I'm going to go for my gun say it's the sight video.

11:55Again, reverse camera is definitely the hardest thing to deal with.

12:01So we're going to plug it in, plug it in, and there's a little thing on top that says

12:09what is what, so G is the mic camera.

12:15Alright so we are going to plug in the camera., oh what the heck it already has it plugged

12:22in, oh there's already the rear rear camera on here, cool, I guess I'm tripping out

12:29It already has a rear camera. It's actually on the harmless. So we have everything wired up

12:30Already has a rear camera. It's actually on the harness. So we have everything wired up. We have the reverse camera wired to the

12:37To this powers the reverse camera and then it also is on the 28 pin

12:42I know it's kind of confusing but it's not very between your own install

12:45So everything is pretty,

12:46Pretty much installed in the back here. We do have extra like for a full stop like that

12:53Somebody being so we're gonna have the USB hooked up and I have all that goodness and kind of just finished just wrapping things up

13:08We're putting back the head unit right now, we've got the trim in there, let's,e

13:13get this plug in there.

13:14Should we do the frame first? the frame thing, give a,e a nice touch, it even fits.

13:27It's pretty big.

13:30How would you fit it in?

13:35You might have to do it before this.

13:38Did you put it through the wirefersh?

13:51There you go, how do I a..., put it in.

13:58It's the bottom of the string.

14:03Yeah, it's not

14:24the problem is the clearance for the little trim piece so we're going to go without it

14:35This is actually pretty hard so I'm going to use two hands because he can't do it by himself.

14:39Guys, we have it working. Look at that. It's awesome.

14:43So, let me see who this hit and focus.

14:47We are setting up the steering wheel controls right now with the steering wheels.

14:50We still have the plastic thing on.

14:52We're going to take that off in a bit.

14:55Alright. Save it.

14:58Sound hit. Save.

15:01Take this out.

15:02Take it all out.

15:10Looks like a...

15:12Yeah.

15:14Yeah, take it out like that.

15:24Nice.

15:26Now we get rid of this crap.

15:27Doing this, iDoing...

15:29Insane. It looks amazing on this car. Look at that. Dude, this looks like a new 2019

15:31, it looks amazing on this car. Look at that

15:34Dude, this looks like a new, new 2019 silent. Yes, I got that nice Model 3 look

15:40It's more modernized

15:42Not bad at all. The colors. Do you like this green or your old? This screen is a lot

15:51Insane so colorful

15:53What so that's what you're gonna be prime day was last week is the first, first thing you do

16:06You're gonna go on Amazon dot-com. Let's see how fast it is

16:16Do you have that we got the browser working? We had the wrong connection hook good. Look at that

16:22Can we do like the desktop one this green so wide?

16:30Calculator

16:35That times five see if it works

16:54Oh, it does then it does dim, but there's no this button does not light up guys

17:02Unfortunately, not really a game changer for sure

17:07Yeah, I mean that's about it

17:10That wraps up the install. We got the no no no we stop Andrew. I don't worry about that

17:15Well, okay, honestly right out the box. We cannot get this Android autos the work so there's that

17:20Maybe if we had an Apple product or something like that but Android auto is a no go

17:25but um

17:26I'll keep you guys updated

17:28Let's hook up a Bluetooth in here

17:33iDoing that iDoing so I do iDoing

17:39Pear okay, what's the pen 00 maybe the chisers

17:43Oh

17:45There it is. All right think I paired play a song

17:56It's playing we have to go to the Bluetooth at wait, you're on the radio every now

18:00Wait you're on the radio every now

18:08much concludes the iDoing head unit it looks amazing the colors pop the

18:18ultra-wide aspect ratio definitely sets it off against its competitors now

18:23remember this was a double din and it still retains the if you like DVD CD it

18:29does have that availability and you could get a carplay to work on this

18:34one as well I'm having a little bit trouble but maybe with a software

18:38update they can make it a little bit easier alright this is the iDoing if you guys

18:42are planning to pick it up I'll put the links in down

18:44below in the description you can get it from you know the good places like

18:50AliExpress, eBay and stuff like that but I'm really impressed with this head

18:54unit I didn't think this aspect ratio would work but because it's so wide it

19:01doesn't block like AC vents you know AC vents this even this timer right

19:06here and AC controls because it's it's just this wide and I I mean if you advance on

19:11the side I can see it being an issue but for most parts I think normally usually

19:15the car setups are kind like this unless you have a truck or something like that

19:18but yeah looking really good and she's see you guys in the next one later

19:31So we have everything wired up we have the reverse, it's so colorful.
