13" Rotating 1080p Android Head Unit: Universal Double-DIN Install in a Subaru BRZ

John squeezes a huge 13-inch, 1080p, six-core rotating Android head unit into a compact BRZ. It uses a standard double-DIN mount and a pre-wired harness, with one splice for reverse. Android Auto rotates with the screen.

Yes — you can install This kit on the Universal double-DIN chassis: your car needs a double-DIN opening (or a double-DIN dash kit) with a 16 min DIY job. John squeezes a huge 13-inch, 1080p, six-core rotating Android head unit into a compact BRZ. It uses a standard double-DIN mount and a pre-wired harness, with one splice for reverse. Android.

Overview

John's BRZ was already running an aftermarket head unit, so this swap is mostly unplugging and re-plugging. The new unit is a 13-inch, 1080p, six-core Android screen on a double-DIN body. Pull the trim, remove the screws, photograph the wiring, and plug in a pre-wired harness. The one wire that isn't plug-and-play is reverse: connect the unit's reverse-in wire to your car's reverse signal so the unit knows when you're backing up. Mock-fit and test first. Bluetooth audio worked right away. The matte screen protector kills reflections at the cost of a little contrast, and he kept it. Android Auto connected over USB and even rotated with the screen thanks to the gyroscope. Then he plugged in the camera video (pin H on the diagram), the GPS antenna, a radio antenna adapter and the HDMI cable, and slid it in. Mounting the double-DIN cage further back in the dash gave it a cleaner, sunk-in look. It still blocks the vents in a car this small, but the hinge lets you tilt or rotate it for clearance. His take: it looks hilarious in a car the size of a Miata, and it would suit a truck or SUV better.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Know the unit▶ 0:30

    13 inches, 1080p and a six-core processor on a double-DIN chassis. Make sure your car has a double-DIN opening.

  2. 2

Pull the old head unit▶ 1:05

Pop off the trim around the radio, then remove the 10mm bolts or screws holding the unit (John's were screws) and slide it out.

  3. 3

    Unplug and document▶ 1:39

Disconnect everything on the back. Don't be intimidated by the wires. Take a photo so you don't have to remember what went where.

  4. 4

Check the size in the car▶ 2:30

Hold the screen up to the dash. It can tilt and rotate to portrait. In a small car it covers the center vents.

  5. 5

    Plug in the pre-wired harness▶ 3:49

The pre-wired harness makes power and speakers plug-and-play. It's two main plugs.

  6. 6

    Wire the reverse trigger▶ 4:36

Reverse is the one part that isn't plug-and-play. Connect the head unit's reverse-in wire to the car's reverse signal wire so it knows when you're in reverse.

  7. 7

    Mock-fit and power-test▶ 5:20

Plug in the main cable and fire up the car before mounting anything. It booted on the first try.

  8. 8

Screen protector: matte or not▶ 6:28

The included matte protector kills reflections but makes the contrast a bit duller. John kept it. You can always peel it off.

  9. 9

Test Bluetooth and the UI▶ 7:19

Bluetooth music worked right away. The big on-screen volume control helps in a car with no steering-wheel audio buttons. Sound is good but not as good as the DSP units he's tested.

  10. 10

Aux, USB and Android Auto▶ 8:47

There's an aux input on the back and a USB port. With his phone plugged in, Android Auto launched and even followed the screen when it rotated.

  11. 11

    Connect the camera video▶ 12:04

The harness has a video-in plug. Match the camera input to the diagram: camera-in is pin H, the far-right corner, and the notched plug only goes in one way.

  12. 12

Mount it and connect the rest▶ 13:04

Bolt on the OEM-style mounts, then connect the aux, USB, backup camera, GPS antenna and radio antenna adapter.

  13. 13

    Slide it in▶ 14:17

Check the mounting orientation (John put it in upside down twice). Watch the thicker HDMI cable and guide the unit into the plastic locating holes, then refit the trim.

Tip: Mount the double-DIN cage further back if your dash has room. It sits flush instead of sticking out.

  14. 14

    Vent clearance▶ 15:23

It blocks the vents in a small car, but the hinge lets you tilt it or flip it vertical for more airflow.

0:00So we got the reverse camera wire in.

0:30So we had the 13 inch head unit did a little unboxing earlier and today we're

0:36, gonna actually put it into the car so again some highlights about this head

0:40unit is it's 13 inches 1080p resolution which is insane it's a six core

0:45processor and it's 13 inches yes I said it again it's crazy so we're gonna do an

0:51install today I'm gonna kind of show you how easy it is it's a double din set

0:55up so yeah to make sure at least you have a double din and we're gonna be

0:58replacing my head unit today so first thing you want to do is take off the

1:07typically your head unit looks you know looks

1:09something like this without the mount of course.

1:11You guys would have a screen and if you guys

1:13were doing just a general car

1:15there's probably a plastic trim covering it.

1:17it.

1:18So you just you know just plop it out

1:20do the best you can.

1:24It's easier.

1:27And then when you remove the trim

1:29there's usually either 10 mils

1:33In this case we have the screws, so we're just going to remove the screws.

1:39Once you've removed your head unit, there's going to be a bunch of wires.

1:44Don't be intimidated.

1:45That's just how it is and you want to unscrew everything on the back of this unit.

1:51So unscrew everything.

1:58And you're already towards the guts and it's been really quick it's been probably been about five

2:00And it's been really quick.

2:01It's been probably been about five minutes.

2:03I'm going to take a picture here.

2:05So I don't have to remember everything.

2:07Certain things like the backup camera

2:10is a little bit more time involving.

2:15You want to make sure that's okay.

2:17That's I can.

2:19So in your case if it's an OEM

2:21it's the other you unplug everything.

2:23So I'm just going to plug all this aftermarket stuff.

2:25And we're going to resume later.

2:27Alright so we got most of the wires out.

2:29We are looking at the new head unit.

2:30We are looking at the new head unit.

2:32Now this screen is absolutely massive.

2:35Now in the unboxing, we kind of showed it off,

2:38but now we're actually in the car

2:41And you can kind of see this thing is an absolute beast.

2:47Absolutely.

2:48This it's probably gonna sit right here.

2:51So, yeah.

2:55And then you can also flip it vertically like this.

3:00And then adjust it.

3:03So, if it was sitting right here.

3:07It's an absolute beast.

3:14No, it might not fit this interior very well but hey, it's all we got so we're gonna do

3:19it and see how it looks like because a small car with this big screen, that's just, that's

3:26insane.

3:27Now I can see this be more fitted for like a Lincoln navigator or a, you know, a GMC

3:34I mean like a Yukon or something like that or a truck but in a small car

3:43like that it's just it's just funny and then it's gonna fit in kind of like

3:49right here so I bought the pre-wiring harness so we can test it for the most

3:57basic stuff. It's just this. Plug it in and then plug it in. We got the reverse

4:09camera wire in. So we plugged in play these two main harnesses but then we have

4:14the reverse in. We're gonna hook it back to exactly. Oh shoot! Is that Dr. Tran. Tran?

4:20what's up wow I want one of those for my car you look at this look how look how it's

4:28gonna fit I don't even know if it could fit it's too much yeah so we got the

4:30Look how it's going to fit.

4:32I don't even know if it could fit.

4:34It's too much.

4:36It's just insane.

4:38Yeah so we got the reverse wire.

4:40And that was the one thing that's not plug and play.

4:43That was the most annoying part.

4:45So have you the reverse in wire to plug into your reverse signal wire.

4:50So your head unit knows when it's in reverse.

4:54That's a big key.

4:56Alrights so it

4:59So we're not going to

5:01we're not gonna test the reverse just yet. We're gonna really focus on the head

5:08unit working so we're gonna plug this bad boy in and that's it so oh my gosh it's

5:20insane so we're gonna just kind of mock-fit it I know there's a bunch of wires

5:27hanging out but we're just kind of test plug in this little baby IDE cable my

5:30Plugging this little baby IDE cable.

5:36My gosh.

5:43Let's fire up the car.

5:45Please work.

5:51Oh baby we got action.

5:53You gotta leave the door open.

5:55You can leave the door open.

5:57Get some air flow.

5:59Look at that.

6:01Oh my gosh.

6:13So it has a gyroscope, so it kind of knows your orientation.

6:18Oh my gosh.

6:22Alright so we got the head unit.

6:24Kind of mocked in there.

6:26I'm really surprised with the screen.

6:29It does have that screen protector right now that's matte.

6:33think of that matte look do you like it or it is a screen protector so you could peel

6:37You can kind of see the edges that you can peel it.

6:39But it really, in some of my videos,

6:42you probably noticed that there was mad reflections.

6:45With this, you don't really see reflections.

6:49Oh, it's the volume.

6:51Okay, let's not.

6:52Right?

6:53Do you see any, like, you would see my reflections clearly,

6:57but with this matte screen, everything looks nice.

6:59It looks frosted, and it does make the contrast

7:01And it does make the contrast a little bit more dull.

7:03But the benefits is no reflections.

7:06Or less reflections right?

7:08What do you think?

7:09I prefer it being matte honestly.

7:12And if I don't like it I can always take it off.

7:15I think I'm just gonna keep it.

7:19So we're going through the settings.

7:21We just tried Bluetooth.

7:23It is working.

7:25This is a new interface for me so I'm not entirely sure how to use it.

7:29So there's Bluetooth.

7:31Kind of you can hear audio right there.

7:36This kind of reminds me this interface reminds me much like the Tesla interface

7:41It's cool, to have the volume so even because the screen so massive you can actually choose a screen like right there

7:47For the volume which. Which is kind of nice because this car does not have general controls

7:52So having that big buttons and stuff or big touchscreen UI elements is really nice

7:57get Bluetooth music, get play maybe. So yeah you guys can hear it and it sounds

8:05good with

8:06good with the EQ everything set. Not sure if it sounds good, I need to do more testing, not sure if it sounds

8:10good, as good as the DSP models we've been playing with, but the sound is good.

8:17It's not amazing. Let's, let's go through with the UI a little bit.

8:27bit just make sure everything is dandy we can kind of see it's kind of tracking

8:32the car a little bit saying it's on its side or something like that a lot

8:37long it's not working we do not have the GPS antenna or anything

8:40hooked up hard wire no radio right now I don't even have that antenna so ox there

8:47is ox on the back of this so if you want to have ox you can plug in your

8:50aux which is super nice and there's actually a USB right here I wonder if I

8:57can use it for Android. The Z-link that I saw a Z-. Link app.

9:03Got camera. This is really cool. Appless. So it's got some some stuff. Let's see if

9:14it works. I'll plug in my phone first.

9:20I'm not sure if the Android is using this.

9:27My phone is Android Auto, baby!

9:32No way.

9:36That's just insane.

9:38You got my Google music.

9:41Wow.

9:43auction.

9:44You know what would be a game changer if.

9:46If you rotate it and then it like follows.

9:50Play.

9:57So android auto is working.

9:59I'm pretty fall asleep.

10:01I want to see if I do this.

10:03With the youth thing just it did it.

10:08You see that it did it.

10:10It did the gyroscope thing.

10:12Holy.

10:14You know my mind is blown right now.

10:17It's blown.

10:21It just it just works.

10:25It just works.

10:27And because the interface is so wide.

10:30basically has a little small window right here and so it says Android Auto

10:34little cut off but that's fine like it's working oh and it just works I'm just

10:52shocked right now I don't have the I don't have the reverse camera hooked up

10:56yet but let's see if the reverse signal wire is working it just works we out

11:00It just works.

11:02We out here.

11:03It's great.

11:09So we're going to wrap everything up.

11:11Make it look nice.

11:13We're going to hook up the accessories.

11:15And then just wrap it up altogether.

11:17So we confirmed that the unit is working.

11:20So we're going to wrap it up.

11:22Make it look good.

11:24First thing is

11:24you can get you installed the mounting brackets for the car.

11:27I used the OEM BRZ bracket.

11:29So I'm going to take it off the old head unit.

11:31I'm going to put on this new one.

11:33As well as I'm going to start wiring certain things.

11:35So I just put in the radio right here.

11:38Again the main power and everything is hooked up.

11:40Back up camera.

11:42I need to hook up that.

11:44Which I'm going to do.

11:46That's kind of different for every car.

11:48But I'm going to show you how I do it for this car.

11:50That way I mean.

11:52if you guys do it.

11:54You guys know.

11:56What do you.

11:58Right here.

12:04harness has video in so it's and

12:07this one has the RCA jacks for like subwoofer and stuff so it's

12:22Oh yeah, so, that's a very crude basic way. It's very universal in that way. I'm not going to go into depth into that. That's a whole new story. So now you have the camera video signal in you. You want to match it with whatever this says right here. It only goes in one way. So, but we're just going to look at this diagram. And it says.

12:52camera in is H which is the far right corner like that see how there's a

12:59little notch real life it's one way and so we got the OEM mounts onto the head

13:04unit it's followed by the other side to and now we're just plugging all the

13:10connections these are like the aux cables the USB's etc. backup cameras in

13:20there everything is very nice and dandy

13:25GPS antenna right here so let's screw that bad boy

13:34This is our Apple CarPlay which might the primary way to go.

13:38But just in case your phone gets

13:39gets stolen or lost.

13:41It's nice to have a backup.

13:43Kind of like a TomTom or Garmin GPS.

13:45Those don't use data.

13:47They just use the GPS antenna.

13:49To.

13:51Do it's thing.

13:53So we have it kind of mounted.

13:55And then we have the last plug.

13:57To the last.

13:59Piece of the puzzle.

14:05antenna. You can buy these radio antennas off of like Metra for cheap

14:10cheap cheap too. I'll put a link down below if you guys were looking for it.

14:14harnesses and stuff.

14:17All right, I'm going to put this puppy back

14:19in for like the third time,

14:21because I put the mounting upside down.

14:24All right, and we're squeezing.

14:26Okay, so sometimes you get to watch for these wires,

14:29especially this HDMI, it's a little bit of a thicker cable.

14:34Okay, and that up boom, there's little like

14:36plastic little guiding holes and we're in. We got it nice and mounted. let's, put

14:43back this trim piece, make it look Gucci. We do what we want. Alright look at that we

15:02have it installed. Check it out. Now notice that we have a pretty sunk in back there giving

15:10it that nice is fitment right here before I had the mounting points like in the

15:15normal spot and it kind of protruded out so I have the double DIN really sunk

15:20back in there so if you have room back in your car you can I would highly

15:23recommend it now it does block your vents a little bit or a lot of bits so

15:30you can you can move it and stuff like that with the little hinge so you

15:37like that so now for this angle you have a little bit more vent clearance you can

15:46also flip it vertically keeping you a little more clearance right there too

15:54but, yeah, let's fire it on.

16:06start your car so it doesn't die

16:24you
