Yes — you can install This kit on the 2012-on Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S / Toyota 86 with the same dash (John's car is a 2016 BRZ) with a 14 min DIY job. Pull the BRZ's radio trim (held by clips) and the bracketed radio, move the clips over, plug in the vehicle harness, add a power wire for.
Overview
A full install of an 8-core Android 10 head unit in John's 2016 Subaru BRZ (also for the FR-S and 86 with the same dash). The radio trim is held only by clips; Canadian and US cars have different trim pieces and you reuse yours. Remove the bracketed radio (usually Phillips screws) and unplug everything behind it: AM/FM, dimmer, the 10-pin, the 6-pin and so on. Transfer the clips to the new unit; the design is very similar. The vehicle harness plugs straight into the back. Two tips from his experience: his front speakers stayed silent until he ran the brown wire off the 28-pin to turn the amp on, so check that if you have no front sound; and the included 28-pin didn't handle the backup camera, so he wired his own with an RCA lead and the reverse signal from the 28-pin (wiring diagram linked in the description). The 10-pin carries main power, dimmer and front speakers; the 6-pin carries the rear speakers. He fishes the microphone behind the trim, routes two USBs, connects the yellow lead (reverse signal and camera, plus antenna power that boosts the radio signal) and tucks the GPS antenna inside. On first boot he loves the clean UI, the dark mode that follows the headlights, YouTube at 720p on the screen, and the settings for the camera grid, navigation app, and car logo.

Step by step
- 1
Remove the radio trim▶ 0:43
Pull the trim piece; it's held only by clips. Canadian-spec and US-spec pieces look different. You'll reuse yours, and its clips get transferred later.
- 2
Unbolt the radio▶ 1:16
The radio sits in OEM brackets, usually held by Phillips screws. Pull it out.
- 3
Unplug everything▶ 1:51
There are a lot of plugs behind it: AM/FM antenna, dimmer, the 10-pin, the 6-pin and the rest. Remove them all.
- 4
Transfer the clips▶ 2:15
Pluck each clip off, pull back and push it into the matching spot on the new unit; the little teeth protrude a bit more. Check the new unit isn't hitting anything.
- 5
Plug in the harnesses▶ 3:53
Both the unit's harness and the OEM-style harness plug straight into the back of the head unit, and the radio antenna plugs into the back too.
- 6
Fix: no sound from the front speakers▶ 4:09
John's front speakers stayed silent until he ran the brown wire off the 28-pin so the amp turns on. If your front speakers have no sound, check the 28-pin.
Tip: You may not need this on every car.
- 7
Backup camera wiring▶ 4:35
The included 28-pin gives you steering-wheel controls if your car has them, but not the backup camera. John wired his own: 28-pin to an RCA jack, with the reverse signal also coming from the 28-pin. See the diagram linked in the description.
- 8
Know the plugs▶ 5:45
The 10-pin controls main power, dimmer and front speakers; the 6-pin controls the rear speakers. The other plugs in the kit are for different Toyotas.
- 9
Microphone and USBs▶ 6:21
The blue plug is the microphone; fish it behind the trim so it peeks out up top. The teal and purple leads are USBs routed to where you want them.
- 10
Reverse, camera and antenna power▶ 6:53
The yellow lead carries the reverse signal and camera video. It also powers the antenna booster for a stronger radio signal.
- 11
GPS antenna▶ 7:14
You could mount it on top, but tucked inside is fine and looks cleaner.
- 12
First boot and settings▶ 7:37
Check everything works. You can change the boot logo (Subaru, Lamborghini, Tesla, anything), dark mode follows the headlights, and you can set the radio region to America so the last band is 107.9.
- 13
Driving and camera settings▶ 12:10
Enable video while driving if you want YouTube to play, set the auto-sleep and brightness, adjust the reverse-camera grid lines, choose your default navigation app, and use key study for hot keys.
Wiring notes
- 10-pin: main power, dimmer, front speakers. 6-pin: rear speakers.
- No front sound: run the brown wire off the 28-pin to turn the amp on.
- Backup camera: 28-pin to RCA; reverse signal from the 28-pin; the stock camera needs a 12V-to-6V reducer.
- Yellow lead: reverse signal, camera video and antenna booster power.
- Mic (blue plug), 2 USBs, GPS antenna, radio antenna adapter.

0:00One last walkthrough of all the accessories.
0:20We are in the Subaru BRZ 2016.
0:24But this will work on the 2,012 all the way to 2019, 2020.
0:28So the current model, if your car looks like this,
0:30looks like this, this dash right here, they're going to be set. Now, this does have
0:37and this will also work with serial controls, which this one does not have, the 2017s have
0:41it, but I digress.
0:43The first thing you want to do is actually just remove your original trim piece.
0:48Now these are actually just being held by clips.
0:50So if you have the Canadian spec one, it looks like this.
0:54If you have the USDM spec one, it might look like this.
1:00You're going to have to re-use this because the trim unit is going to basically take this
1:06portion of the screen now.
1:08It's going to be dope.
1:09After you remove that, notice how there are clips on it.
1:13You're going to have to transfer these clips, but we're going to get to that later.
1:16You're going to get to something like this.
1:18You have the OEM brackets right here.
1:21Usually it's held by this in case Phillips, but you might
1:46But yes we're gonna pull this straight back,
1:51and it's gonna reveal a lot of plugs.
1:53Now, this is an aftermarket head unit,
1:55but your OEM one will have some much plugs.
1:58Just remove remove all the plugs you see in the back.
2:01There's gonna be a lot
2:02be a lot of
2:03plugs just remove every single one of them you're looking at AM FM radio
2:09dimmer switch in off the 10 pin 6 pin and so forth
2:15How big this screen is now looking at the back we have the clips that we need the clips that we need to transfer over
2:21in
2:22Which are right here this screen is now looking at the back we have the clips that we need to transfer over which
2:22which are right here, I'm going to show you usually all you have to
2:28do is just kind of pluck it like this and then just pull back then you'll have the little teeth
2:32Then you'll have a little teeth.
2:34And you just push it into the new spot.
2:38You can kind of see these protrude out a little bit more.
2:47The design is very similar.
2:53Let me try the try to make sure it's not hitting anything.
2:58Look it activates it is actually in very snug.
3:20Just from the friction alone.
3:23Wow.
3:25So, yeah we do have it.
3:27oemn has this this like this foam carbon, carbon fiber.
3:34This one does not have.
3:35This one carbon fiber a B.
3:37We like something, like a little bit.
3:38We like this wrap and then we can wrap this to
3:40even though this has texture.
3:41I'm not sure exactly what we're going to do with this.
3:44But yeah, we might have to get more flat texture
4:00Right there. This OEM harness also plugs in directly to the back of the unit. Now you can
4:06You can kind of see the little modification I did right here.
4:09This brown wire came off the 28 pin and the reason why I did it like that is because
4:14s because I needed to have the amp turn on or the front bottom speakers wouldn't work.
4:18So I've just always done it like this because I go through so many head units.
4:23might not need to be able to do that.
4:24But if you had no sound in your front speakers, you want to check out that 28 pin and the
4:31next off is the radio.
4:32So that's pretty self explanatory that plugs into the back.
4:35Now the 28 pin that came with the OEM harness, the 28 pin actually does not do enough.
4:45You'll be able to get your steering wheel controls and stuff like that, if you guys had that.
4:48But for the backup camera, I actually had to wire my own harness.
4:52I put a wiring diagram in the below, but just to go over it real quick.
4:58This 28 pin goes to here, then I get like an RCA jack and that
5:00Then I get like an RCA Jack and that.
5:05That does its magic and the.
5:07The reverse signal is also.
5:19We have a 2012.
5:20I think those even have backup cameras.
5:23So I dig for us.
5:25Just reverse signal is in the 28 pin and also the video signal is on the.
5:28The.
5:2928 pin here too.
5:4510 pen controls everything and comes to mean power dimmer front speakers and
5:52fire all that and the six pen controls your rear speakers so you have all your
5:58audio working now now you have to write here, which
6:01here which I actually bought a different
6:14history because I wanted to get this extra harness and I'll show you the
6:14wire diagram separately. All right these other ones don't do anything for this car
6:21but it would if you had a different Toyota. Okay this little blue plug right here I
6:27have the microphone and this microphone fishes through all the way here behind
6:32the trim and then it shows right here. Not very non-intrusive but if you want
6:36them it's not needed but if you want that nice audio right there it's
6:41something that nice to have.
6:44These right here, this teal and purple are USBs
6:47that I have fished over here.
6:51So that's what that is.
6:53The yellow one controls your reverse signal
6:56and also your video camera.
6:59That depends if you have a backup camera,
7:01That depends if you have a backup camera.
7:03But if you.
7:04It's there now.
7:05And it also gives you power for your antenna.
7:08So this basically amplifies the signal making the radio signal stronger.
7:13And that's it.
7:15It's just GPS antenna right here too.
7:18So.
7:19But that's pretty self-explanatory.
7:21It's.
7:22Just GPS.
7:23You could have it mounted on top.
7:24But honestly right there is fine and it looks a lot cleaner.
7:27So I'm going to plug everything in and squish it.
7:41All right.
7:42So here's the first boot.
7:43Make sure everything is working.
7:45Bam.
7:51There it is says Toyota.
7:53But again, you can change this to Subaru Lamborghini Tesla Acura anything you want.
8:07Oh, it's super smooth, has z
8:17Really like the UI. It's very clean and I I can remove this little sticker in a bit. Actually, I'm just remove it right now
8:34, I'm going to just remove it right now.
8:36Oh, very nice.
8:38And it does.
8:39Oh, that's the first time I've seen a UI go into dark mode.
8:45That is awesome.
8:47turned
9:07it's when I'm driving, that's when I'm using the most, but whew, sheesh, lookin' good my boy. I've I've been really loving this unit, been playing with it, testing it out and everything,
9:37you never seen that before. Super nice radio. Radio radio.
9:45radio the, the interface looks simple and clean. Music if you havea USB music or it has 64 gigs internal
9:51internal to so that's really nice video again, if you have internal 64. 64,
9:57plenty of space play store, YouTube. Let's check out YouTube how it looks like

10:24i video, 1080p, audio sounds great, fills the whole screen, quality 360p and it goes all the way to 720p because this is the 720p display.
10:30Audio sounds great fills the whole screen quality 360p and it goes all the way
10:35way to this 720 because this is close to the 720 display 720p display.
10:41It looks really nice.
10:43Remember I had a pioneer head unit that was 720p and this looks 100 times
10:48times.
10:49there.
10:50Wow, that looks great.
10:51It's not even on max brightness right now, which is awesome.
10:54And they got even got the picture in picture because it's Android 10.
10:58So you can be doing your thing.
11:03I'm going to plug in a phone here.
11:06So you can either have wireless Apple CarPlay, but I have Android.
11:10So I'm just going to plug in my S10. Non.
11:16So the overall the head unit.
11:19Let me turn the car on the head unit is just the head unit is super responsive looking
11:31really fresh.
11:33Let's go to the settings and look at the.
11:38All the features there.
11:44So under car settings you change the lights.
11:47That's called elements.
11:48So whatever lights you want.
11:51And then we have steering controls to.
12:02default navigation apps, it defaults to this but you can do maps or anything very
12:10cool driving settings allow for watching
12:13videos need to check this if you want to watch YouTube while driving or
12:18otherwise it would be a black screen extras settings auto sleep controls
12:23depending on your your battery you can set it depending on how you want it
12:27brightness it's cool has a dark mode now which
12:32Keep an auto that wave when you have your.
12:35and.
12:36It just goes into dark mode.
12:38And then here's some of the.
12:40Settings I have for the reverse camera because we do have reverse camera here.
12:43So you can change the grid lines and all that.
12:46Whether the volume goes lower.
12:49In the volume., you know. D
12:55factory settings you got one two six.
12:59You can
13:14This is where you would put it in there
13:15But for this case we're going to use Subaru
13:19Here. Some radio presets were in. In America. So our last band is 107.9
13:24So I'm just going to change it to America and there's a bunch of other settings. You can do key study is right here
13:31If you want your own hot keys
13:34And this is more
13:35go to more technical stuff, but I'm just going to show you what it's capable of
13:39You can change the amp volume and stuff like that too if you do hear like any weird noises.
13:48So I'm gonna apply that. Apply an exit. So it needs a reboot to do the whole bootloader.
13:55But yeah, overall this head the head unit has been, has been great. I love every edition
14:01they added that dark mode. The just the UI looks clean simple. So thank you guys for
14:08watching. If you guys are interested, pick this up. Links down below and smash-
