Roadanvi CarPlay & Android Auto Head Unit: Subaru Crosstrek Step-by-Step Install

Free the analog climate cables behind the glove box and under the driver side, pry out the radio surround, swap in the Roadanvi harness, program the steering controls, then transfer the hazard button, vents and climate panel.

Yes — you can install This kit on the Roadanvi head unit for the Subaru Crosstrek, sold through Roadanvi's Amazon store (link in the description) with a 23 min DIY job. Free the analog climate cables behind the glove box and under the driver side, pry out the radio surround, swap in the Roadanvi harness, program the steering controls, then.

Overview

John installs a Roadanvi head unit in a 2013 Crosstrek. The trim color matches the interior well and the layout looks like his old WRX's. The twist is the analog climate control: two cables run from the panel, so you remove the glove box (pinch it and fold it down) and release the climate cable at the white clip on each side, including the tight spot under the driver side. The radio surround pries off from the top; the hazard button pushes forward to pop out, and the plugs underneath are hard to see. The car already had an aftermarket subwoofer tapped into the factory harness, so John photographed the wiring before unplugging. The Roadanvi's main harness does almost everything with one plug into the unit; extra plugs are there for other model years. On first boot the radio worked, a Samsung Galaxy Fold connected to Android Auto over USB-C, and the steering controls were programmed in settings with no extra module. John fed the subwoofer amp's RCA leads from the unit's sub out through a Y-splitter, added the GPS antenna with 3M tape, then moved the hazard button, both vents (four clips each) and the climate panel (four Phillips screws) to the new unit. He says the whole job needs only a Phillips and a flathead, though there are a lot of steps.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Unbox▶ 0:11

Cables for USB, audio and an optional backup camera, an antenna lead, the main harness and extra audio cables. Nothing extra to buy. The trim matches the factory color well.

  2. 2

    Remove the glove box▶ 1:28

Because the climate control is analog, the cables have to be freed. Pinch the glove box sides and fold it down from the bottom.

  3. 3

    Release the climate cables▶ 2:06

At the little white clip, pull the circular climate cable end out. Do the same on the driver side under the dash, where there's very little room.

  4. 4

    Pry the radio surround▶ 3:00

This newer plastic is less brittle. Start at the top, work your way around, and finish at the bottom. Don't use too much force.

  5. 5

    Pop the hazard button▶ 3:51

Push it forward from the top (or release the clip at the back) and it pops out. You'll reuse it on the new unit.

  6. 6

Unplug and route the climate cables▶ 4:32

Pull the surround out a bit, unplug the two harnesses underneath (hard to see), and route the climate cables around. The clips release from the top, where clearance is tight.

  7. 7

    Remove the radio▶ 5:35

Remove the Phillips screws, pull the unit out, protect the trim, and unplug everything.

  8. 8

    Photograph existing wiring▶ 6:55

This car had an aftermarket subwoofer with T-taps on the main harness and a two-to-three-channel box. Take a picture for reference.

  9. 9

    Use the main harness▶ 7:36

This bag's harness is the one you need. The radio antenna isn't powered, so that adapter isn't needed, and camera plugs for other model years can hang out.

  10. 10

    Plug in and boot▶ 9:13

Plug the harness into the unit and turn the car on. First boot takes the longest. Radio came on.

  11. 11

    Android Auto over USB▶ 10:37

A Samsung Galaxy Fold connected over USB-C, charged, and Android Auto popped up automatically, with apps like YouTube Music and even Teams.

  12. 12

    Program steering controls▶ 11:59

It works out of the box with just the main harness. Select a function on screen, press the steering button, and it turns blue when saved. John set next/previous, mode to Home, and the back button to voice.

  13. 13

    Subwoofer out▶ 13:06

The owner's sub amp had RCA leads; John used a Y-splitter into the unit's subwoofer output. It hits pretty hard.

  14. 14

    Accessories▶ 14:10

Screw on the GPS antenna and plug in the subwoofer cable and everything else you can. 4G wasn't used. The main wire handles almost everything.

  15. 15

Transfer the hazard button and vents▶ 14:33

The hazard button just pops in. Each vent has four clips (two top, two bottom): lift and pull with a pry tool, then click them onto the new unit and check the flaps clear.

  16. 16

    Transfer the climate panel▶ 17:02

It's held by four Phillips screws and clips. Move it to the new unit; keep the old parts in case you go back.

  17. 17

    Tools needed▶ 19:14

Just a Phillips and a flathead, no ratchets. It's easy with the video's guidance, but there are a lot of steps.

  18. 18

    Final wiring and reassembly▶ 20:00

GPS antenna on top with 3M tape, subwoofer/accessory lead, USB, extra antenna lead and the main harness. The USB goes to the glove box. Plug in the AM/FM antenna, reconnect the climate cables first for wiggle room, then reinstall in reverse.

  19. 19

    Final check▶ 22:30

The climate control clicks and works, and the aftermarket subwoofer still works.

0:00We are here taking a look at the new head union we got this for the 2013 cross check so

0:06It's going going to do a little unboxing and then we do an install video, right off the bat.

0:11, we have certain cables.

0:14This is going to control your USBs, your audio.

0:18And if you wanted to do backup camera, it's there for you.

0:25Wire antenna, this is.

0:26Like the main harness for switch, again, more audio cables because it is an audio head

0:32unit. But, yeah, provided for you, you don't have to buy anything extra. And, then the we have the

0:38big one right here. Alright, check out this head unit, look, oh, so good. This, this is for

0:43the cross track looks very similar to my previous car, which was a Subaru WRX. I've

0:50always known a lot about like these cross tracks because of the hazard buttons. Now,

0:55something that's different about this car is the AC controls are not digital. So, they're

1:01gonna be two cables coming out of it and then there's still the harnesses of power and stuff like

1:05that. So that's gonna be interesting to use right there. But yeah, look at this head unit. The

1:12trim actually matches the color very well. I mean the factory one does have a kind of like a

1:17slightly like brush plastic look to it. But then,

1:24just like the overall interior. So it's not gonna't clash. All right. So the first step

1:28is because this AC unit is analog, we're just going to have to remove the glove box.

1:30because this AC unit is analog

1:32we're just going to have to

1:34remove, the glove box there

1:36the glove box is pretty simple

1:38you just kind of pinch it

2:03I kind of fold it from the bottom

2:06There's a little white thing right here, and then you, you, like

2:11liL

2:13Circular thing, this is the ac wire so we're, gonna have to pull that out

2:18Go and it's going to be the exact on

2:24the other side right so now we're under the driver

2:30and it's kind of hard to show, but this is a very similar look under the driver side. It's the same cable style, so you just havee to go under the dash. Very little room under under here, so I can't really film it. Just pull that out, you should be good. Alright, so I removed those two cables on the side. The next thing you have to do is just pry the unit forward, and I'll show you guys how to do that. We call this

2:33the Fray and Pool. This is a newer car,

3:00stronger and less brittle. So I don't think we're how many issues here. Alright so we can

3:06pry the top part would and be the easiest little holes right here. Just be careful okay this is

3:15this plastic so you don't want to be too powerful on it. The way I usually do a side pull it from

3:22the top and then I kind of work my way around and I end at the end. I end right here.

3:33okay

3:35let's pull from the top

3:40pry pry pry

3:44pry it

3:47so nice we got the prying from the top

3:49now be careful

3:51now we want to remove the hazard button

3:53from the top

3:58there's a little clip back here

4:00f you can also push it forward too

4:10pushing it forward is a little bit easier for me at least

4:12so when you push it forward

4:15you can pop it out a little bit easier

4:19now we're going to reuse this hazard button

4:21for the other interior

4:23hazard button out

4:30there we get of get a little more clearance to pull in

4:32so once the pull it out this much

4:36you should be able to

4:38there's some plugs underneath

4:40you can't really show that

4:42but you want to unplug

4:46these two harnesses in the bottom

4:50I can barely see them myself

4:52I want to unplug those wires

5:01Once you unplug those bottom which I can show you a closer picture of you have to route these little AC cables around

5:10So here of the AC cables that we talked about and then the back of this is how it looks like so when

5:16you're unclipping it it's from the top which is there's very little clearance

5:20But keep that in mind

5:23So here's the clips to push it like this and they're facing this way

5:28All right, so we're gonna have to transfer a lot of these pieces over to the new head unit

5:35and before we do that the head unit, this is the new head unit, so save that somewhere

6:01So I'm gonna call them Philips says the plus sign, not the, not the front head.

6:07Yeah, that's what we call them here in California. Boom. Then this whole thing pulls out and just like

6:20before let's put that protection on because the other one was me at plastic. This one's actually

6:30You wanna unplug everything you see.

6:37Alright, and there goes the head unit, boom.

6:46Let's put that aside, kinda see what we're dealing with right here.

6:55So let's have an aftermarket subwoofer in it, you can kinda see right here.

6:59get these t-taps coming out of this main harness, which is interesting. And then you have this

7:00of the main harness which is interesting and then you have this box right here

7:09changes the two-line channel to three so I want to take a picture of this for

7:17reference for later yeah here is how it looks like oh shoot it's been

7:24overexposes all time look at that that's how it looks

7:31whoa, whoa, whoa, there's just too many wires, right? You, you want to get this bag right

7:36here. I'm going to take my glove. I'm wearing a glove because it was a little bit hot and sharp back.

7:42That's why I wear a glove, but you want a harness like this right here. And this is

7:52This is going to be your main one that you're going to need to use.

7:56So there's going to extra wires here, I can tell right off the bat, now the radio antenna

8:01is not powered here so we don't need to use this one, so we don't need to use this antenna

8:06one.

8:07And there's going to be some other things that we will not need to use.

8:12The reason why this is the case is Subaru changes their model year and the manufacturers

8:18of the after market head units want to add the most compatibility like they just want

8:23to make sure everyone's covered as much as possible.

8:26That way it's easy

8:27for everyone.

8:28So

8:29you end up you usually end up with extra of stuff., now stuff like this right here camera

8:34This head unit isn't equipped with it, but maybe a 2015 model is so that's why there's a

8:58So the other stuff hanging out, it's just gonna hang out.

9:02And then, extra stuff right here.

9:10See, that doesn't fit, so don't worry about's about that.

9:13And we're gonna plug it into the main unit.

9:15Now, this unit does have anything plugged in yet.

9:18And that's totally fine.

9:24So, go, we got that in..

9:26Alright, turn the car on and we're going to fire this thing up

9:35and we're going to fire this thing up for the first time just kind of mock it in place

10:00Now the first initial boot up usually takes the longest.

10:09Ooh that looks good, nice and smooth.

10:18I don't hear any audio coming out of its so we're going to have to test that in a bit.

10:27There we go, I got radio.

10:37Alright, so I it connected, I connected my phone through a USB-C cable. I'm using the Samsung.

10:44This is a, Samsung, take this out. Oh, it's a Samsung fold. And we're going to try the

10:50the ladies and greatest from Samsung with this

10:53head unit. Someone put it to the accessory

10:57position automatically detects it charging my phone and then it should

11:01And then it should automatically pop-up says connecting and now we're listening to some

11:09Kanye West that new album did trash. Let me know in the comments below.

11:17So, we have Android Auto right here because boom, you got YouTube music and whatnot.

11:23Think we even have some teams. So, you can use Microsoft teams while you're in your car.

11:28how nuts is that I don't know if I want to you know do a meeting

11:29meeting in my car but well is there is there so I'm gonna wrap all the

11:30to, you know, do a meeting in my car, but well, it's there, it's there. So I'm

11:38gonna wrap all the additional cables, not just USB, because I know now that the

11:44audio is working and all that. It sounds really good. If you have an aftermarket sub

11:56You literally just plug that in and you should be fine. Hey guys

11:59So um, let me just tell you about the serial controls because it works right out of the box,., you don't have to buy anything once you plug in.

12:06That main harness literally just one thing plugged into the head unit right now

12:10Once you plug that in what you do is you select what you want

12:14So in this, case, this is the pre the next button

12:17I go into my steering wheel and I press what I want the next button to be boom

12:22up button and then it saves it.

12:25If it doesn't save it, then it won't turn blue.

12:28So let me try to do that, so you guys can see.

12:31I want that at right there.

12:33Boom!

12:34I want that button to be that.

12:38Mode can be on the home button.

12:43And. I'm going to show the owner how to do that.

12:46The the call button or the voice can be I don't know mutes or something like that

12:53Really depends on what the owner wants

12:56I'm not just or just do what I would probably want

12:59So the the back button. I'm gonna have it to be the voice

13:00So the back button, I'm going to have it to be the voice.

13:06So this guy does have an aftermarket subwoofer right there.

13:11I don't know if you guys can see the controller.

13:14And there was existing t-taps right here.

13:16Boom.

13:17Now, what I did was I used those two RCA jacks coming from the subwoofer amplifier.

13:23And I have it plugged into, I use a Y splitter and I plugged it into the subwoofer out.

13:31Now now people, not a lot of you aren't going to have that, let me adjust it so it's

13:36not getting flash banged right now.

13:39Now a lot of you guys won't have this but it does have subwoofer out right there and I'm telling

13:45that subwoofer does hit pretty hard let me tell you that so other than that I'm

13:53gonna just play the rest of this stuff and you're just gonna have to just screw

13:58it on which I'm gonna just do it's pretty easy you just screw it on to the

14:04active head unit. I don't know if you guys can see that pretty clearly

14:10clearly. So this is a GPS in penna. This is a subwoo, for cable,

14:14and it. It. Comes with a bunch of stuff. You just plug everything you can on the back

14:18and then we we, we're not doing 4G or anything with that. and that's it.

14:23This main wire, this one wire pretty much handles everything. Now we're going to transfer

14:29the old stuff to the new car like events. So I'm going to show you guys how to do

14:30stuff to the new car like the vents so I'm gonna show you guys how to

14:33that too. Let's start with the hazard button it's pretty easy you just plop it

14:38back in that's it easy. Alright so the next thing we have to do is take off

14:43these vents. See? No I'm doing a really crappy lighting so you can just have to

14:52make do but to take the vents out there's four clips

15:00sure there's plenty of room so you're not like hitting anything so there's these two top ones right here

15:09and there's two bottom ones which you can kind of see easier and all you have to do is lift it

15:15and pull lift and pull lift and pull when I say pull is add pressure to it and we do the top

15:25now you can use this with a flathead which actually might be easier but

15:29but I'm using this pry tool because it's just safer.

15:34So we just have to get this last tab right here.

15:38And the folding should just pull out.

15:40BOOM! So here here's the two tabs.

15:42Just so you guys can see a better view

15:44of the two cl of clipped areas.

15:46We can kinda see where you need to pry open stuff.

15:49Do that to both sides and we'll take of the AC unit

15:53and that's it.

15:54Alright, so once you removed each vent right here,

15:58you can put it onto your new head unit.

16:01Now, it's just the reverse step, so it's not too bad.

16:06It's not, it's not too bad.

16:12You see a there's a clips,

16:31You'll hear a satisfying click, that means you did it good.

16:36Starting clicks, cool.

16:43So now we have a nice vent right here.

16:45All right, so you have something like this.

16:48Test, events. Make sure they're all good.

16:51And open the flaps. There's no clearance issue

16:55and we're set here.

16:58Next we're going to tackle the AC climate control.

17:02All right, so the next thing we need to do, guys, is to transfer this

17:06climate control unit, the HVAC system, into the new one.

17:10Now, if you look at the back, it's just being held by four Phillips head screw drivers,

17:14so I'll point them out. Got one, two, three, four, and then being held by clips, too.

17:22so just unscrew it. I don't think I'm going to show you guys that. So that pulls straight

17:29out.

17:30up, let's put this to the the side, now you want to keep that because let's say you plan on changing

18:01s. And that's the good. And that's the good thing that it's kind of like a little single DIN set up or one and a half is because you get more clearance and you can put more stuff in there. Alright, to put it is kind of like the opposite. Make sure the two tabs are facing up here. Match it up.

18:35that you just that I just took out. I know I can cut a lot of this stuff out but I

18:43think from from what I hear

19:14you just need a Phillips head screwdriver and a flathead and that's all you need

19:21to uh, to remove this. So no, no handle, no ratchets or anything. It's pretty easy to do this

19:28install. If you have guidance with the video, now I definitely recommend watching this video and I

19:34kind of going through what I'm doing anyhow, because even

19:37even though it's, um, easy it is, there is a lot of steps and

19:42I can see where someone could have issues now look at this right here looking good

19:56all right so we have everything installed

20:00and I'm just going to go through it all. the antenna wire is kind of short so it's right

20:05here though. this is a 4G we're not using. the GPS adapter we have right here and for

20:13my uses I used to just stick this 3M tape on the very top of it. that way it's

20:27like out of the way and still looks good you don't really there

20:35is for the Subwoofer controls a several accessories so definitely plug that one

20:39in this one's your USB and then this one was the again more antenna so definitely

20:48just plug that in you might not have anything plugged into that one but

20:52that's just for more antennas followed by the main one that controls

20:57everything that's, the important one so let's wrap this up I had the USB cable right

21:04fish to his his glove box area when he decides to use it. So pretty cool. Cool. Now when

21:16you put everything back, I like to just kind of push it back here. Make sure we

21:36plug in the antenna so we get the AM FM

21:46and then we plug in the main harness

21:54and then we have those two wires on the bottom too

22:04so we have like that and don't forget the AC cables

22:08just do the install the reverse and I

22:12haven't fully put it in yet but I'm

22:15going to do the AC first so then

22:16there's some wiggle room where I can

22:18manipulate a few things. Alright

22:30good, and then we have the AC unit still, working clicky clacky, I don't know what's

22:38sitting here on. This was digital, and then right here is also the other thing going on

22:46there. So very cool. Some not really things is with a subwoofer still works. This is

22:54an aftermarket one. It actually slaps pretty hard. I don't have my car, and none of

22:58cars really have subwuffer after market so it's good and then yep it
