Subaru Outback & Legacy 2009–2014: $359 iDoing CarPlay / Android Auto Head Unit Install

Pop the silver trim off a 2009–2014 Outback/Legacy, unbolt the factory radio, move the brackets and vents over, plug in the iDoing harness and set up wireless CarPlay.

Yes — you can install iDoing on the iDoing 9" Android 12 head unit for Subaru Outback 4 / Legacy 5 2009–2014 with a 19 min DIY job. Pop the silver trim off a 2009–2014 Outback/Legacy, unbolt the factory radio, move the brackets and vents over, plug in the iDoing harness and set up wireless CarPlay.

Overview

John installs a roughly $359 iDoing Android head unit in a friend's 2009–2014 Subaru Legacy (the same dash as the Outback). The silver center trim is held on by clips, the factory radio comes out with four screws, and the plastic clips, vents and lower piece transfer to the new trim. The iDoing kit includes a Subaru-specific harness (labeled for the WRX/Forester/XV) that plugs into the factory 28-pin and 12-pin style connectors, plus a ground and the radio antenna lead. It powers right up; John maps the steering-wheel buttons, pairs the phone over Bluetooth and connects wireless CarPlay, which hands off from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi for better audio. They only used one USB lead and skipped the reverse camera for now. His one gripe: the new trim is darker than the original brushed-silver piece, so it doesn't quite match.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Pull the silver trim▶ 0:49

The factory radio has a silver trim around it. It's only held on by clips, so pull the whole piece off evenly.

Warning: Be gentle around the screws and clips; older plastic can break.

  2. 2

Transfer clips, vents and the lower piece▶ 1:53

The plastic clips, the air vents and the bottom piece all move over to the new trim.

  3. 3

    Remove the radio▶ 2:15

It's just four screws. Unplug the connectors: a ground, what looks like a 28-pin and a roughly 12-pin plug, and the radio antenna lead at the bottom.

  4. 4

    Look over the unit▶ 3:05

The "brains" have a micro-SD slot and the cable to the screen. The Subaru harness is labeled for the WRX / Forester / XV but fits this Legacy. GPS and 4G connectors are capped, and the Wi-Fi antenna is on a wire. The pin layout and wiring diagram are printed on the unit if you need a reference.

  5. 5

    Plug everything in▶ 4:27

The factory wires don't reach far out of the dash, so just plug in whatever fits; the connectors only go one way.

  6. 6

    Power test▶ 6:07

iDoing calls the screen QLED, and it powers right up. Check Bluetooth before putting anything back together.

  7. 7

    Map the steering-wheel buttons▶ 7:06

In the steering-wheel settings, press each button and assign it: volume up, volume down, next track, previous track, and mode (or mute / home if you prefer).

Tip: If your car has no reverse trigger wire, you can map a button to show the backup camera.

  8. 8

    Connect wireless CarPlay▶ 8:50

The phone handshakes over Bluetooth first, then switches to Wi-Fi for higher bandwidth, so CarPlay and Android Auto audio sound better than plain Bluetooth. They paired the phone and launched CarPlay through the CarLink 2.0 app.

  9. 9

    Reassemble▶ 12:57

The vents and clips pop into the new trim easily; don't lose them. Then the unit goes in with the screws and the trim clips back on.

  10. 10

    Optional USB and camera▶ 15:41

To use the USB ports, fish the lead down into the glove box. They used only one plug since the owner only uses CarPlay, and plan to add a reverse camera later.

  11. 11

    Trim color▶ 18:42

The new trim is darker than the original brushed-silver piece. It doesn't bother John much, but it would look better if it matched.

0:04Alright, what's up guys? I've moved because I moved to a new house. So I've been moving a lot. a lot.

0:49has the whole silver silver trim around when you have the head unit. So we have GPS on

1:04and then putting in the new one should be a simple and will be straightforward.

1:19but the the actual, this piece is like a brush aluminum. Alright, the remover should be easy.

1:26Just clips holding this trim here. Thank you., oh just pull the whole thing on it's easy

1:33those screws huh be cautious. You may need you may be breaking things. So

1:40a little price for my help. Easy holy. Yeah. So these plastic clips I think you, a little you

1:53Yeah we were going to be transferring these ones to the newer ones and the vents and also we're

1:59going to be transferring the bottom piece over to the new trim piecesf to remove the this

2:15it's just four screws. Yeah, so we'll remove that right now. Oh, you already got them.

2:32There's a ground one. Not too bad. So let the let me tell you what plugs that we unplugged.

2:42Just looks like a around like a 28 pin and a 12 maybe. A little bit more than the 12 pin but

2:48these three's three and then we had to remove this bottom one. This one looks like a radio antenna. So

2:56we'll see if the new one has a radio antenna because that is I never really seen this super

3:05use this cord before so. Alright, so we have the brains of the unit looks like there's a

3:09the micro. SD slot

3:13right there. The like a ID cable. But that's what's going to be plugging into the screen.

3:18. And this is where all the magic happens. This has the super harnesses right

3:22inside. Now it says WRX forster X five.

3:27but I think the X five might be the track. But this is a super legacy and we're just

3:32going to make sure everything works and you can see all the pin layouts on the left here. We

3:37have where the red little. These are covers. GPS and 4G 4g 4g so

3:46the the wifi antenna most likely is going to be on a wire not on like a antenna

3:52a antenna antenna. You do we do have the adapter for the bottom right bottom left. Left or my pink

4:15wire diagram. Let's see if I can show you guys this in case you need a reference to that. Check it

4:21check it out and then the top is just like a PC code, all right so. So let's start

4:33plugging it in and hopefully it will work

4:47these wires don't go very far out so I might not be able to show you guys clearly but you just plug in what fits.

5:20and it will measure the resistance. I don't

5:57have to continue to make sure it works. We can proceed from the

6:07go the the screen for IPS display they did. They do claim it as a QLED panel so it should have great colors.

6:17colors. Oh, it powers right up. That is a promising thing that. So this, this is generally iDoing.

6:54You don't have to worry about that., I know this is crazy. We can check Bluetooth., oh,

7:06me. Yeah, so let's let's just map it. So I was curious about

7:11general controls. So volume up. We're gonna volume up here. Volume down next track.

7:19And back of track mode. Do you want that to be mute or just like mode? Or home?

7:31, or is.

7:53control. But my car doesn't, have a reverse trigger. And I have a backup camera. You

7:59You can map a backup. Right there. So let's say this could be like,

8:22so. So we do have

8:45right here. So we're going to have.

8:50signal. Now you you ask me why are you asking? Because the first thing that the phone does

8:56is the handshake the Bluetooth saying, Hey, okay, good. Now, now that they did that, it switches,

9:02it switches over to Wi-Fi for a higher bandwidth signal and you'll get that higher quality of audio

9:08from Apple

9:09or Android and you can test this. You can play a Bluetooth and you-you'll notice the sound

9:10and then you play on Wi-Fi or a.

9:16a- sound car play or Android

9:18and you just have a

9:23a a higher bit rate and just sounds better. There's also a thing called parking and Mike, which we could.

9:26We're gonna add later. We're just gonna be testing the most important functionality for me

9:31would be the car play because that's all you use honestly.

9:34All right after we hooked up through Bluetooth to to of the head unit.

9:42right now, I went in here, car link 2.0, and now I have

10:12you can call it screen sharing but

10:42is all Apple.

11:13The quality of the audio is

11:16is great from what I'm hearing

11:18initially, he's like playing classical

11:20music.

11:22We're going to wrap up this

11:42, but then he has his own little

11:44cub.

12:13You can see,

12:18there's 5 tabs in total

12:20from my experience looks like

12:57Don't lose them, and they just pop in real easys easy

13:03so.

13:08Alright, so the only thing we have plugged

13:30right now, and he didn, and he didn't

13:32really

14:00want to

14:30the other ones it's pretty easy. Alright so we. So we have it install these,

14:37vents they work up and down left right

14:39close

14:40open

14:41let. Let's get this thing. Things started. I'm going to put the keys in.

15:10I always say infotainment ages the car like you change the infotainment.

15:14you know generally the engine stuff is... they. They're generally carry

15:18carryovers but technology moves so fast. So have this right here.

15:23And then we have a Android Auto Apple Car Play. renowned

15:27Alright so that's pretty much it overall it was very easy install. I know we

15:34didn't install things like the USBs but if you wanted to install the USBs

15:37so you could you can have a reroute over

15:41here. So you kind of fish the wire and you. Kind of bring it down here into the glove box

15:43but it was literally you. Pop the head unit out you put those two screws in and

15:50and for us we only plugged in one on plug because he only uses Apple car play and

15:58s and Android I don't auto but in the future we plan on.

16:02putting a reverse camera onto the so that's going to be exciting we reverse camera

16:06or he's gonna reverse camera on his

17:36all around right here very clean and

18:06actual trim to pop up a little bit more but for you

18:36little bit brighter than this this obviously is a little bit brighter

18:42and has a the brush look

18:44so they do have them they go back to the silver color and non brush

18:48so I guess it kind of matches with the silver

18:52I'll let you guys judge to my eye this is dark the

18:59trim around it does it bother me not really but it would look better if it matched if it was brighter

19:07maybe it would hurt your eyes I don't know, but it's better than if they did it

19:13not if they did it this in
