Full Camry tear-down: shift/console trim, four 10mm bolts, plug the three white OEM harnesses into the iDoing, route USB/GPS/mic/Wi-Fi, then program steering-wheel keys. This 28 min guide covers the Toyota Camry 6 XV40/50, 2006–2011 with tools, parts links and the full video.

Overview

A longer, accessory-complete install on a 2011 Camry that was already running an Alpine unit. John removes the center stack, plugs the iDoing harnesses straight into the OEM plugs (no extra adapters), routes USB to the glove box, hides a USB for a wireless charger, mounts the mic, then programs steering-wheel controls and walks settings.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

Remove the shift knob and lower trim▶ 2:04

Unscrew the knob (lefty-loosey), pull the lower trim (two plastic clips), and remove the two Phillips screws. Keep screws in a lidded cup holder.

  2. 2

    Pry the shifter surround▶ 3:33

Three clips up top, two lower. Start near the shifter where the clips are weaker.

Warning: Set the parking brake before shifting out of Park so the surround clears.

  3. 3

Unplug cigarette lighter / AUX and free the stack▶ 5:30

Slide the panel, squeeze the clips on the lighter and AUX plugs, then remove the two lower 10mm bolts that hold the radio.

  4. 4

Pry the upper dash carefully▶ 8:23

Toyota's dash material has a recall reputation for going gooey — use a plastic tool, go slow, then remove the two upper 10mm bolts.

Warning: Avoid metal pry tools on this dash.

  5. 5

Pull the unit and unplug▶ 11:05

With four 10mm bolts out, only clips remain. Lay a microfiber down, pull, and unplug three head-unit plugs, two antennas, plus the AC/climate plug below.

  6. 6

    Plug the iDoing harnesses▶ 13:43

Three white harnesses go straight into the back of the iDoing plus the AM/FM antenna. No extra adapters needed for basic power and sound.

  7. 7

    Install accessories▶ 14:54

Route dual USB to the glove box, optional USB for a wireless charger, screw on the GPS antenna (stash under the dash if you mostly use CarPlay), and plug the Wi-Fi/mic lead.

  8. 8

    Mount the microphone▶ 18:22

There's a built-in front mic, but AC noise can muddy it. Fish the external mic to the dash/A-pillar area facing forward; tape is included.

  9. 9

Seat, climate plug and power-test▶ 20:51

10-pin = power + front speakers + illumination; 6-pin = rear speakers; larger plug = stereo/steering controls. Slide the climate panel on from the left notches, power-test before full reassembly.

  10. 10

    Program steering-wheel controls▶ 25:54

Hold each wheel button and assign volume up/down, next, previous and mode (John used Home). Peel the shipping screen film when you're ready.

Tip: Factory settings password is in the description (3368) — codes change across firmware.

0:00What's up guys, it's your boy John. We're back again here with another video today

0:04We have the Toyota camera. I believe this one's the 2011. Hey, what do you think white white looking pretty good?

0:11You got the upgraded headlights

0:13So it's that more that Lexus same same with the tail lights

0:18The owner also upgraded very cool. It's all tinted out now. We're gonna do a very important install because

0:26I mean, if you're watching this you already know

0:28He is rocking a

0:31Alpine head unit right now and he sent it constantly disconnecting the buttons on

0:39Pressing like goast, but you even know he's not pressing it. It like it presses on its own

0:44So we're gonna take this head unit out

0:47It's a nice looking Alpine head unit, and I'm actually a big fan of Alpine but compared to these Android head units

0:55Hard to beat, it's hard to beat

0:58Let's just do a quick comparison

1:00This is the I doing head unit, which is one of my favorite brands

1:07Look at that

1:08Boom the screen is so much significantly bigger and the paint match

1:14I don't know what kit he has right here. The paint match is actually another you can pick that up

1:21It's gonna be better as well

1:24It's hard to hit up with the lighting the angles and everything

1:27But it should be a pretty easy

1:29Uninstall so I'm gonna cut to a footage of me uninstalling the OEM head unit because I don't want you guys to see

1:36How to take this one off because most people are gonna have the specific

1:40Unit then we'll cut back to putting the new head unit in

1:43That's what I just want to show you is the screen quality

1:47Oh

1:48Oh, oh my gosh, this is insanely slow

1:51Resolutions absolutely garbage

1:54Colors are very muted

2:00Looks so 1990s my goodness firsted

2:04First you need to do is you can remove the shift knob

2:07You're gonna have to remove this whole trim piece and I know it sounds kind of frightening

2:13But it's very easy so to unscrew you left a loose it that bad boys comes out

2:24So put that somewhere safe. I'm gonna put on the passenger seat. Next thing off is you just pull for this

2:30You just grab it and pull and there are two clips. They're just plastic clips

2:35so looking too strong

2:39Grab and pull and that's gonna reveal two

2:42Phillips screws which we will have to unscrew so

2:46Get the tool

2:48This is a little small one. So I'll have a little more of a smaller. I like using small screw drivers because inside of a car

2:58There's a lot of room these screws. You definitely want to keep in a safe place

3:05Usually I put these in a cup holder. I'm just gonna put it in a cup holder because it does have a door

3:10So maybe it won't get lost. So now you can pull this out

3:14But you have this trend down here blocking it

3:19So I don't know you see that you see the trim piece. It's this trim piece right here. Not the bottom one

3:33So you get this trim piece and I just use my hands, but you can pry it open

3:39Kind of slowly like this. I'll show you where the clips are at so that it makes more sense

3:44So there you go the clips there's three clips up here and there's the two clips that kind of

3:50You kind of put it down and it goes in. So you kind of want to start. I like starting from here

3:57So you saw where I pulled it from or on this

4:00Shifter because these clips right here are a lot weaker and it's away from the spray point

4:05So now that with that piece gone

4:08we can

4:10Go further

4:11All right, so the next step is we can try to pull this out, but we're gonna have issues with just shifter

4:19So with this shifter lever here, you're gonna see a little button right here now make sure your car is in

4:26It's in park right now, but you need to have your parking brake engage and the parking brake is on the left of your brake pedal

4:34Have that pushed down because when you shift it to into a gear

4:39You I mean, you're not you're not in parking anymore

4:42So keep that mine too when you start your car. Sometimes other cars will detect that and they won't

4:49bother you with it, but so you're gonna have that and we're out there

4:57Remove this trim too

5:21Here a little seam and it's kind of hard to get in camera. Just pull that out

5:30Now there is wires up for the cigarette lighter

5:36But boom look at that all

5:39It got six boats. I know the lighting's a little bit harsh

5:45But you know bear with me

5:49The clips on this right here if you guys have a hard time is

5:53Is right here

5:55And this is where I pulled in this section right here where it's a little bit weaker these clips aren't as strong as these yellow clips right here

6:03So try to pull from this one and I pulled from both sides straight up

6:10Okay, so

6:12Now that we had that out of the way

6:14You don't have to unplug it. You can just kind of twist it like this

6:21And then we just have to remove this piece right here

6:24The reason why we had to remove this piece right here, which is slide out a little bit and then you'll be able to

6:30Who unplug the cigarette lighter and then he also has an ox porch both used to be very useful at the time

6:41Not so much anymore now these are these ports are held by clips

6:49So there's a little plug in the back of them and you just unplug them

6:54And this is how the plucks look like and you can see there's little clips

7:06Sorry, there's little clips and you just squeeze it and then pull the cable out

7:11Squeeze it pull the cable out and

7:15I was saying this now reveals the two 10 millimeter bolts down here

7:21So we finally got it what holds this head unit together is two tens right here and two tens above here, and that's it

7:30so

7:31all right

7:33so

7:34You can see that this is a point of view, so we look in

7:41Now you'll see a 10 somewhere around here and

7:44Ten somewhere around here, so there's two of them remove those and we are done on the bottom

7:52drop it about a boom

8:04About to be one more to go your fingers and

8:09Ta-da that's exactly what you

8:14Good thing I still see it make sure you don't lose these in the capper

8:19Now the top piece is a little bit more

8:23Risky I say risky because this the Toyota trim right here this dashboard

8:29It's there was a recall in it because it's not very good

8:33It gets kind of gooey and it kind of breaks down so the plastic or whatever they use here

8:39It it like deforms and stuff, so when you're prying at it try to be very careful

8:46You're gonna have to pry this open somehow without damaging your dash

8:51so

8:53Just kind of go easy at first see how the dash takes it so it's it's because of Toyota and

9:05The quality on their dash

9:07This one seems good. I kind of taken it slow

9:13My little trim tool. Yes, you can use a flathead, but for this part

9:19I would definitely try to find a plastic pry tool

9:22Which is included

9:24At least in my eye doing it. There you go

9:39Somehow some way this event stayed on it pop that off

9:55Okay, and then as pop this vent back in

10:01So the way these vents work is there's little tabs and

10:07Push it back in

10:11You can give you with that there you go and make sure it's clipped onto here

10:20There you go

10:22So yeah, we'd that I would say that's the hardest part and

10:26What was great is there was no damage to the dash and

10:32And get close up so you guys can see it reveals two tens right there

10:39See if I can brighten it up for you. I can see one two

10:45So let's remove those and we should be golden all right, so

10:58After you remove the two bolts up top and the two bolts down below

11:03This is where things

11:05Go a little more you think it's put some muscle into it. We call this the prey and pull that just means be careful when you're pulling it

11:13Nothing else is holding it besides clips and you just pull which I just did now

11:19I like to put a little microfiber towel to kind of help any like if it falls down or something like that it protects like the paint

11:27here

11:29So you just pull it down and

11:31That just reveals all the plugs now. It's in an awkward angle

11:36So I am gonna have to just pull it out and you guys are just gonna have to do that on your own

11:41Without me can't really seeing it, but I will pull

11:46one

11:48two

11:52Three, so there's three plugs on the head unit and then now there's two more antennas on the head unit, so

12:04one two and

12:06Then don't forget we are also messing with the AC down the below

12:11So we're gonna have to unplug the AC, which is a great plug and

12:19And voila, that's it. So let me show you guys again

12:26There's I know this shows four, but there was three plugs here two antennas and

12:33Then we have the AC now your car might vary because this is a US model and it's also always a lot of different kind of

12:41configurations, but for my configurations that's how it was

12:45All right, welcome back to present time. So we removed that Alpine head unit and now we're gonna install the I doing head unit

12:54once again to this axis area

12:57You have a bunch of packets and all this harnesses I do it makes it very easy

13:03To set it up because

13:07I doing even all these harnesses will give you extra features if you look at the back of these I doing head units

13:13Use the OEM wiring

13:16so

13:17All you have to do is you don't have to put in your harnesses you just plug straight in to the back of this

13:25all these

13:26Three white ones right here plug into the back and then you have your AM FM radio right here as well

13:34All right, so we are done uninstluing that aftermarket head unit. We are back in the present time

13:43Here we will see these three harnesses the great thing about the I doing head units is you don't have to plug in any extra harnesses

13:52You just plug in this

13:54You'll get your power your sound and everything and this is for your radio

14:00Intetta now if you want to hook up additional accessories

14:03We have additional accessories right here like for RCA jack out

14:08Let me just show you

14:10Now these are extras you don't technically need them

14:14This is for for G LTE antenna some people especially the United States we don't really use SIM cards in our head units

14:26This one is if you want to opt in for a reverse camera

14:30Which we didn't hear

14:34So it's good to have a reverse camera

14:36Here are your RCA jacks

14:38So if you were gonna redo the whole audio system and want to hook up to every single speaker like this

14:45You can

14:48Next off is USB and actually we're gonna we're gonna plug in this USB the great thing about these USBs

14:55They have two right here and there are they are labeled like an arrow and TLS

14:59I usually route these to the glove box

15:05Also the customer here uses an extra USB one of these

15:11cheap ones right here

15:13To power his reverse

15:15Or not reverse, but they're wireless chargers

15:19So we're just gonna have it hidden so the wiring is nice and clean for him for the wireless charger

15:25This simply plugs in to the back you can't really mess this up because they only go one way

15:30So you can try to plug it you'll see a notch and because of the notch, you know it fits right here

15:36No, you can't mess it up because it only fits one way

15:42I'm going through the bag some more

15:45GPS antenna, so this GPS antenna doesn't use your phone's GPS

15:50It uses a built-in GPS within the head unit itself and I can show you how to wire that real quick

15:58Now you could route this to the top of the dashboard, but because this user only uses apple car play

16:05This is more like a last resort if you strand it and needs to use the built-in GPS

16:12I've actually done this right here and it picks up the signal perfectly fine

16:16Just having it at the top and you want to get the one that says GPS

16:22The other two are the for the 4G

16:26Internet which we're not going to use and they just kind of it just screws on

16:32Make sure it is snug and now you have GPS antenna plugged in

16:41Next off is another additional USB now USBs are pretty useful

16:46So I am also going to wear this extra USB into this car

16:51This one only has four little pins and they match it up with the four little pins right here boom there we go

17:03Last I guess what's it? We're almost done with the baggie

17:07This is for the SIM card reader. You want to see how it looks like

17:12You put your little SIM card in there

17:16That's actually pretty handy. I know I have the SIM card on my

17:21Tesla

17:22I pay like an extra ten dollars a month

17:27But this car already has apple car play and then lastly you want to hook this up

17:32This one has the microphone attachment where if you want to attach an additional microphone and it also has the Wi-Fi

17:39antenna built in

17:41So we're just going to do that right here

17:44And we're going to plug it in

17:46In the winter so this is this little baby antenna. It's going to give us all the goods we need

17:53And in this bag, we have an extra USB and

18:04FMAM

18:07Adapter which we don't need to use because the OEM one works

18:12But it's good that they give it to you just in case you have a

18:15Weird model

18:17Here's the a microphone now the current microphone is

18:23installed after marketing and it's just kind of like this

18:29It's kind of just I don't know dangling like that

18:33So I'm just going to install it

18:36Now there's one on the front of the head unit already if you can cut this here it there

18:42Which is fine

18:43But sometimes the AC vents below around that area so I'm just install it just kind of right in front of the dash like right here

18:55And that's how I'm going to pull it just right there

18:58so it's not dangling and

19:01You get your facing forward and talking to the mic which is the best quality you can get

19:06So you can just I mean this part you kind of just fish it through and now it's in

19:21Now it depends on how you want it you can either tape it right here

19:26Which might look a little bit cleaner or have it a little bit higher

19:31And it kind of latches on right here

19:35It would look a little bit

19:37nicer

19:39But I'll give the owner

19:41Here's preference so it comes with tape

19:46Double-sided tape that if you want to mount it on the steering we'll call them instead of like this dash trim piece

19:53But yeah, that looks a lot nicer than having it kind of dangles like

19:57Literally dangling the aftermarket side up he did and you can see

20:03Where this thing is

20:06That's kind of

20:10All right, so we have the USBs go to the glove box

20:15It's basically just I just kind of tuck my hand through there and put this wire out

20:20I have the microphone coming from the top and it kind of just swings through this little hole

20:25Very good

20:29I have a little USB that kind of this we're out of down here

20:32This is optional this is because he wants a wireless charger

20:35So I have it right there for him

20:38And then I have nothing plugged in besides those those ports we talked about

20:43The USBs I do need a re-plug

20:46This is a little tight

20:49Now we just plug in those

20:51three white harnesses to the back of the head unit right here

20:57Do ones that fit this is a 10 pin which

21:00powers everything in terms of accessories when you have the car on accessory when you have it to on

21:06It also powers a front speakers and it also powers the

21:11Illuminate so when you turn your headlights it tells the head unit that it is on

21:15These the six pin right here is for the rear speakers

21:20There's like

21:22Yeah rear speakers right there

21:26That should do it

21:28These ones let's see what it plugs into

21:31I believe that's a 20 pin or I don't know exactly about one two three four five six seven eight nine ten

21:3920 pin this generally controls the stereo control

21:42So yes, we're gonna retain the stereo controls on this bad boy if you have issues with stereo controls

21:47It will be this hot one

21:49That's pretty much it we plug everything in

21:54Oh, forgot the radio

21:56And there's a big two connectors. You can only really plug the

22:01FM one right here

22:03boom

22:04So we have that plug did

22:07And you can get it kind of get us seated right here to see how it looks like

22:12And it looks amazing now this gray wire the bottom is gonna be for your

22:18Climbing control system

22:21Let me go get that

22:24So your client control system is right here and then you have that bottom plug the way this latch is on

22:30As you'll see these little notches

22:33So start from the left

22:35And then it slides to the right so now it's on there

22:38And we want that because this thing kind of gets clipped in to make it more secure

22:45But I'm gonna plug it in first just for a little more room

22:48And then you just slide it in

22:51boom

22:58So we got it in there and now I just want to test it to make sure it works

23:12boom that booted up really fast

23:15Said you can hear the sound

23:17Awesome amazing

23:21Now I'm gonna move to the

23:28Optimal point so he has a wireless charger right here

23:34And I have that USB where I was talking about sorry for the chime

23:38It's gonna be really short

23:42So we're gonna see if it charges an iPhone 15 Pro Max

23:46There you go it does charge

23:48So

23:50Amazing

23:51We are good there

23:52So here's another wire

23:58Yeah, just kind of wrap everything up in reverse and we're good to go

24:15All right, so check everything that works AC that works

24:20Beautiful

24:21i now let's go over the head unit real quick

24:25We have been the I doing settings or the the home screen it looks beautiful

24:30Carbit Apple card play this does have the screen protector on or right now

24:34So these are like not the ones that are technically a screen protector

24:37But just protects the screen during shipping

24:40So if you want to peel it off we can I'm gonna leave it to the

24:43customer to see if they want to do that

24:47Now here's some settings that I want to go through

24:50Wireless this is for your Wi-Fi

24:53Device has all a bunch of stuff. Let's go through it real quick

24:56Screen brightness

24:58When your headlights are on and off you can see that

25:01When I try on the headlights you can probably barely see that

25:04But it does activate the

25:07Little lights

25:10There you go, so you can see that

25:12GPS storage apps now something I don't like is that beep sound every time you touch it

25:17It's good for tactile feedback, but I it's just kind of annoying to me

25:22So you got that amp on

25:25Let's just all default

25:30So that's good

25:31General here's some general stuff

25:34Cameras, I don't know the

25:38Looks like it's got white light

25:40So you can change the light of this if you want it to

25:43so

25:44Red

25:46Blue just keep it white

25:48You can also do RGB

25:50Now something I do need to get to is the steering control

25:54Because

25:55There's Alpine head unit to have steering controls

25:57But we need to hook them up with some steering controls

25:59So you go to this screen right here

26:01You just hold

26:03You see how it you see how it kind of does that

26:08That's how you program it

26:10So I'll do it in real time for you

26:12So this is volume down you hold it you press that

26:16Volume up you hold it press that

26:19Next

26:21Skip

26:23Mode mode can be

26:27Is home there you go

26:30So now
