Overview

John and a friend upgrade a 2016 Camry with a Dasaita head unit. The box includes manuals, harnesses, RCA leads, GPS and Wi-Fi antennas and USBs. The new screen is huge next to the old resistive one, and it's capacitive with multi-touch like a phone. The upper trim pulls off by hand (there are retaining clips). Then come 10 mm bolts, the four screws on the lower cubby and the plugs for the lighter, USB and AUX. They pull the cubby out and remove the last 10 mm bolts holding the unit. A dry fit shows it fits like a glove. The harness comes with a CAN bus box, which John says matters if you want AC info, door status, the reverse camera or steering-wheel controls to work. There's also a USB adapter so the factory cubby USB still works. The 10-pin plug is main power, plus rear speakers, the 28-pin plug for AUX and steering-wheel controls, and the radio antenna. On power-up the Toyota logo appears, and the screen shows when a door or the trunk opens. Bluetooth pairing, Android Auto and the reverse camera all work. The AC panel comes off the old unit with two screws and clips onto the new one. On a base Camry with single-zone climate you see fan and mode info, not dual temperatures. He rates the fit at the top perfect and the rest good enough, noting Toyota's own panel gaps.

    Pull the upper trim▶ 2:06

Pull the trim off by hand or with plastic tools. It's held by retaining clips.

  3. 3

    Remove the bolts▶ 2:40

Remove the 10 mm bolts at the top of the radio.

  4. 4

    Remove the lower cubby▶ 4:08

Take out the four screws (one here, one there, two on the opposite side), pull the cubby, and unplug the lighter, USB and AUX.

  5. 5

    Pull the factory radio▶ 5:17

Remove the last 10 mm bolts holding the unit and unplug the rear speakers, front speakers, power, radio and climate-control plugs.

  6. 6

    Dry-fit▶ 6:35

Mock the new unit up before wiring. It fit like a glove.

  7. 7

Use the CAN bus harness▶ 7:33

The included harness has a CAN bus box. You need it for AC info, door status, the reverse camera and steering-wheel controls. The USB adapter keeps the factory cubby USB working.

  8. 8

    Plug everything in▶ 9:16

Plug in the 28-pin (AUX and steering-wheel controls; check it if the wheel buttons don't work), the 10-pin main power, rear speakers, the radio antenna and the USB adapter.

  9. 9

    Power up and test▶ 11:11

The Toyota logo shows on boot. Open a door or the trunk and the screen shows it. Pair Bluetooth with a PIN, then test music.

  10. 10

Android Auto and reverse camera▶ 13:38

Android Auto connects (it may offer an update). Shift to reverse and the camera works. The camera comes through the 24-pin cable.

  11. 11

Move the AC panel and clips▶ 14:42

Remove the AC panel from the old unit (two screws plus clips) and the clips from the old head unit, then fit both to the new unit so it clips in securely.

  12. 12

    Route the cables▶ 15:58

Route GPS, radio antenna, the backup camera (CAM-IN), two USBs (cubby and driver side), the microphone up front, Wi-Fi and the CAN bus. Then reassemble in reverse order: HVAC, hazard buttons and so on.

  13. 13

    Check fitment▶ 17:22

Perfect at the top and good enough around the sides. Toyota has panel gaps of its own. On a single-zone base model the AC screen shows fan and mode, not dual temps.

0:00Today we have a Toyota Camry 2016.

0:03Of course you can use a plastic trim removal.

0:05We're just using our hands.

0:06We just pull it off.

0:08I'm going to close this-door.

0:10Yeah, my life is lovely now i'm focused on me

0:40Alright, so we got some thank you manuals.

0:45Harnesses, RCA,

0:47RCA, GPS, Wi-Fi antenna.

0:51This, USB's, and this is like the, the harness to plug

1:40At least like 10 to 11 inches.

1:46It's massive versus that.

1:49And then you got, of course, this looks like

1:49the old school touchscreen like you would get on a Nintendo DS

1:52where it's just kind of like, use your finger now.

1:55This is more capacitive so it's like 10

1:5710 point, you Bought iPhone what they did back in the day.

2:01So similar to that.

2:02So let's get this on right.

2:04All right, so we got the head unit.

2:06First thing we need to do is remove the trim pieces.

2:08Of course you can a plastic trim removal.

2:10We, we're just using our hands. We just pull it off.

2:12You can see there's a bunch of retaining clips right there.

2:15And the whole thing, is there a button right here?

2:17Oh, no, it's just, oh yeah, yeah there.

2:40of the, at the the top. a 10 mil and then we got another 10 mil right here.

2:4610 millimeters and start unbolting that.

3:10it too because sometimes this gets really messy and then

3:45and screws.

3:54we're just gonna

3:55let's put

3:59we're just gonna have to move this

4:00out of way we're not going to fully remove it

4:03can you twist it?

4:08four screws so we're just unscrewing all fours there's one right here.ian

4:12There's one right here and then there's two on the opposite side and you're gonna have to take this cubby out

4:18So it's annoying that this little shift crap is here, but

4:24Best we can do can you do your best to pull it out already did the top one?

4:29it's gonna be a huge fiesta on the bottom just the bottom uh cubby hold

4:38thing should come out excuse my and then there should be

4:46some clips for the cigarette lighter usb and ox so we're unpluging everything that's

4:55right, so we remove the big old cubby it's a lot bigger and deeper, then you got here

5:05you're a look at the

5:17but it's holding the rest of the head unit unit in so just unscrew the 10 here

5:26It

5:47I just want to cover your trim pieces right here and then we're gonna be

6:17we have...

6:19we we. the rear speakers,

6:24front speakers, power, power,

6:27radio radio looks like a climate control so we get most of it and now we're gonna

6:35basically a dry fit of the other unit make sure it at least fits before we

6:41continue and then also try to wire it up mock it up kind of fits it actually

6:47fits it actually fits yeah like a glove of course we're gonna have to kind of

6:54I see the

7:24does it wire, power and everything because that the fit amount is, the number

7:31number two is definitely in that power running in.

7:33We have the harness.

7:34The harness, the harness that came, it came with this CAN bus,

7:37so it's really important to have this if you want like AC or tell your door

7:42to open, or even reverse cam.

7:44Sometimes even steering controls are going to be controlled

7:46It's really nice that the thing is included with the CAN bus.

7:49We also had the USB adapter because I don't know if you remember, but there's a little

7:53cubby right here.

7:54It has a USB so she should be able to, retain the USB controls, which is, it's handy because

7:59having it through the glove box is okay, but having it, oh yeah mounted nice.

8:04Here we have a really big old harness.

8:08We have the, basically plug in all this stuff to the there bag.

8:16camera is sitting in, so we have that, this is the base model, but that might be supported

8:22for the higher end models, we don't know too much, then you have this little thing, this

8:26little thing right here, you want to plug it in for the CAN bus reader, yes, so we have

8:33camera-v in, and again another camera-v in, we also have this, which I'm

8:46Pass through yeah, it looks like a pastor. So if you want some rc bright left front right stuff, so

8:54Maybe for a subwoofer setup looks like or the right left rear left front left

8:59So maybe rc jacks for the front speakers, which

9:03We don't have rc jacks because

9:06Not in this model. So we're gonna plug this in and we're gonna see how it goes

9:11Take this thing out

9:14Alright, so

9:16let's take this big old OEM harness plug in the 28 pin this this usually controls the

9:25aux cable aux steering wheel controls. So if your steering wheel controls aren't working

9:29check this 28 pin this 20 pin is used on certain cars too. I believe I don't know if we're gonna

9:37I don't know if we're going to use it in this car so yeah so this plug so this usually

9:43This is I kind of mirrored. We might not need to use that just see what fits that doesn't fit

9:50This is the main one right here the 10 pin harness

9:53That's for the power for it to turn on and everything again. We have the rear speakers

9:58Plugging as much as you can we have not plugged in the

10:04The radio antenna, which I don't even see

10:07but uh do you see the radio antenna? Did it have the radio antenna? Am I tripping? All right there it is and here's the

10:19radio antenna, so let's get that plugged in and we have the USB so we can use

10:29USB adapter. So this plugs in into here. Oh yes it does fit. That's great

10:59but it might be like like yo and stuff like that which we're not

11:04gonna plug that back into this and pray that it

11:11turns on it is turning on you had the nice Toyota logo this is a really big

11:17step that means

11:27Happy and you. Saw that

11:31So let me just show you that again. I'm gonna close this door. I don't think the OEM. You didn't even even did that,

11:37Uh-huh. No, it doesn't hear

11:44So that one closes opens and even the trunk should open too, so I

11:57So yeah we're gonna tie this up

12:12Let me just in real quick so we're going to connect it

12:27And then we you set the pin number so he's going to put his pin number and hopefully it pairs

12:35Connected to the audio so then we have the nice bluetooth icon right there

12:38Can you can you. Can you test that a song just any. Any kind of music so we

13:08You need have Bluetooth to connected to do Android Auto 2 so we're gonna

13:38Okay, so then now we have an Android Auto update we can do we can tap to update

13:44Not gonna really go into that right now, but, but we're just.

13:46just going to show that Android Auto is working.

14:16And yeah, so reverse camera is working. That's very important and we're just you know adding the functionality is bringing it

14:23up the scuff and continue elevating the product.

14:27This was the cable right here. If you guys didn't have the reverse camera.

14:31It's 123456789101112. So it's a 24 pin and has those wires right there.

14:40We have that all good to go.

14:42Alright, so we're removing the AC unit on the original head unit

14:47and it looks like it comes out in one piece.

14:50There's like two bolts or something like that.

14:51Yeah, two screws, one here and here.

14:57That's it, huh?

14:58Yeah, that's it.

14:59It just pops off two clips.

15:00On two sides?

15:01Right here and here and here and here.

15:06Oh, gotcha.

15:10So let's slide it in here and see if fits.

15:12We might need to use the original brackets, but we'll the original brackets, but we'll see how it goes.

15:18So we're taking out these clips on the head unit, the original one.

15:23So we took out one right here and then one right here.

15:26And we're gonna pop it into the back of this head unit right here.

15:32We slid those clips in, so now this thing has something to clip onto.

15:38The great thing too is this head unit also has this AC HVAC there also has clips clips so

15:45it clips onto the back of this head unit so it's actually fairly secured.

15:50Oh this is all the wiring it looks really daunting because well there's a lot of wires

15:55going on but there's some organization to the mess.

15:58First we the we have the GPS that way we have a GPS antenna.

16:02If you ever lose your phone or whatever you still have GPS as an emergency backup.

16:06have the radio antenna so FM AM this it goes to the backup camera so we're using

16:12camera VIN and then we're just using one of these camera VIN wires these are

16:16gonna be for USBs so we have two USBs coming out one to the center console or

16:21the cubby area and then we have one going down to the driver area. This is

16:26the microphone the microphone we are going to have plugged in here there is

16:29a microphone in the front but we have two so it's like a microphone array

16:33It should, it should sound a little bit better and we have it right in the front so whenever

16:36the driver is talking, it's right where it should be.

16:41We have Wi-Fi antenna and then we have the harness and that

16:45and that's pretty much it.

16:47We also have the CAN bus plugged in.

16:50Now we're going to do the reassembly.

16:52sure you plug in the HVAC, the hazard buttons,

16:55and so forth, like, I don't know, passenger

16:58airbag light, things like that. So we're

17:00going to do that one step by step, and

17:02that's pretty much the same as the removal.

17:05nothing technical about that. So we're

17:07just going to have it all wrapped up

17:08and show you guys where we pretty much

17:10left off from there.

17:16Check system charging. We're not

17:20I'm gonna charge the cars off

17:22Everything nice and tidied up so you can kind of expect this kind of fitment really great fitment up the top

17:27I would say like perfect

17:30around this area is

17:32About like I would say it be

17:34You know it's see like it's good enough

17:38Consider like you know you see some fit and finish like issues right here

17:41And like Toyota is not the best at fit and finish stuff too. You can kind of see some panel gaps over here too

17:46So

17:47It's just how it is this door that was working good everything. Let's actually try the USB

17:54Okay, charging and on a maxi once you plug your phone in it should boot to z-link and

18:00Yeah

18:01This is trying the new update

18:03So I do have the latest update on my samsung note 8 that the doors open the stuff

18:08So let's try a C and stuff. So the front shows it front

18:13shows that stuff for that a

18:15I see

18:18Looks like it's a trend the fan on

18:21So-it doesn't have like individual values right here if you probably have the

18:28The limited models that can diss dual-cl

18:31Control on it looks like you could put values for each person, but

18:34but we do not have do a climate control on this car.

18:39Oh, that's quite sticky looks like she never uses this button.

18:45All right, so

18:47Yeah, it's

19:01And check your mail. Do you ever watch? YouTube while you're driving

19:24I don't know what to do.

19:26Yeah, you got some great options.

19:28You can FTP into your dev server or your production server or anything like that.

19:35This is the radio.

19:54from, from the OEM,

20:24So that's it for today.

20:25Thanks for watching.

20:26I'll see you next time.

20:27Bye!

20:28And.
