Unbox the Roadnavi unit, pull the Camry's trim, two 10mm bolts, the shifter cubby and two more 10s, then plug the factory 10-pin, 6-pin, antenna and USB into the Roadnavi CAN bus harness and test. This 12 min guide covers the Roadnavi Android head unit for the Toyota Camry, sold on Amazon (link in the description); video title: Camry 15–17.
Overview
John and a friend install a Roadnavi head unit in a base-model 2015–2017 Camry so it gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The box is well packed in foam. The upper trim pulls off by hand (clips), revealing two 10mm bolts. The lower trim is held by four clips and two Phillips screws, and with the parking brake set you move the shifter out of the way to wiggle out the shifter surround and the big cubby (unplug the 12V, USB and AUX on the back). That exposes two more 10mm bolts, and the radio comes out; lay a towel down to protect the trim. John explains the factory plugs: the AM/FM antenna, a 28-pin (steering-wheel controls, sometimes backup camera and reverse trigger), the main 10-pin (power, accessory, ground, front speakers, illumination), the 6-pin for the rear speakers and an add-on USB. The Roadnavi CAN bus harness only fits each plug one way, so it's hard to mess up. With five plugs plus the USB connected, the unit powers on in accessory mode with sound, touch, radio and steering-wheel controls working, and Bluetooth pairs with an S10. Then everything gets shoehorned back in. The companion video goes deeper on the interface.

Video chapters
Step by step
- 1
Unbox▶ 0:40
Layers of foam and plastic protect the unit; check the exposed corners for chips from shipping. Inside are the head unit and two bags of harnesses and wires.
- 2
Pull the upper trim▶ 1:50
Use a plastic trim tool or your hands; it's held by retaining clips.
- 3
Remove two 10mm bolts▶ 2:25
There's a 10mm at the top on each side. Keep them in the cup holder.
- 4
Remove the lower trim▶ 2:46
Pop out the lower trim piece (four clips), then remove the two Phillips screws behind it.
- 5
Free the shifter surround and cubby▶ 3:10
The shifter surround is held by clips. Set the parking brake, move the shifter into neutral (or wherever it needs to be) so it wiggles out, then unscrew the four screws and pull the cubby. Unplug the 12V, USB and AUX on its back.
Warning: Make sure the emergency brake is on before you move the shifter out of Park.
- 6
Remove the last two 10s and pull the radio▶ 5:00
With the cubby out you can see the two 10mm bolts at the bottom of the head unit. Unscrew them and pull the radio, with a towel over the trim to protect it from the metal brackets.
- 7
Unplug the factory radio▶ 5:43
The connectors use familiar Toyota-style clips.
- 8
Know the factory plugs▶ 6:18
AM/FM antenna; the 28-pin (usually steering-wheel controls, sometimes backup camera and reverse trigger); the main 10-pin (power, accessory, ground, front speakers left and right, illumination, sometimes reverse camera); the 6-pin for the rear speakers; and an add-on lead for the USB.
Tip: Toyota changes connectors over the years, so the Roadnavi harness includes more plugs than you'll use.
- 9
Connect the Roadnavi harness▶ 8:10
Each plug only fits its matching connector, so you can't mess it up. Start with the white 10-pin and 6-pin, then the FM/AM antenna and the USB. On this car five plugs plus the USB were used; the 28-pin wasn't needed.
- 10
Test in accessory mode▶ 10:39
Put the car in accessory mode. Audio, radio, the touch buttons and the steering-wheel controls all worked.
- 11
Pair Bluetooth▶ 11:17
Find the unit (it showed up as BT-6012) on your phone and pair. The screen still has its protective film, which makes it look a little dull.
- 12
Reassemble▶ 11:42
Shoehorn everything back in and reinstall the trim in reverse order.

0:00You guys already know, this is the Android head unit, now we can get to the bottom of
0:04the head.
0:05Ooh nice, that's the 10 pin, that's the main business.
0:23You guys already know, this is the Android head unit, this one's for the Toyota Camry
0:28and wow look at the box, very clean white on like a little black font nice graphics right
0:34here with the navigation, steering wheel, what do you think, he likes it, he likes
0:39it.
0:40Anyways, we're going to do a quick unboxing right here real quick. One handed, so stay
0:47tuned. Boom. First thing we see is this nice foam, even little square right here. What do
0:55you think about that? Very cool. Then we have the head unit itself wrapped in this
1:03nice plastic. So we got like layers of foam, so it's good protection. Of course you
1:08You want to have good packaging because some spots are like right here are exposed and
1:16could chip during shipping but looks like everything is good here.
1:20Oh, this bad boy.
1:22Yeah.
1:23Yeah.
1:24Everything looks good here.
1:25You have your harnesses and then you have the head unit itself.
1:28What's this bad boy right here?
1:30More harnesses, wires and whatnot.
1:34Now the reason why we're doing this today is we have a
1:38Toyota Camry coming in. We actually already did a video on this one, but this one he wants
1:44Android Auto, Apple Car Play. So we're gonna have to upgrade it. So with this lasing greatest,
1:50we'll be able to do that. We got the head unit. The first thing we need to do is remove the trim
1:54pieces. Of course, you can use a plastic trim removal. We're just using our hands. We just
1:58pull it off. You can see there's a bunch of retaining clips right there. And the whole
2:02thing, is there a button right here? Oh no, it's just, oh yeah
2:08BAM, very similar to it. Is that a fake speaker hole? There's no speaker in there. Yo, I mean
2:20this is the base model so maybe the premium model's got that. Very easy. And then you
2:25can see we are already at the top it's a 10
2:30mill and then we've got another 10 mill right here. So let's get some 10 millimeters and start
2:34on bolting that. Alright so we removed the two 10s. We're going to put it somewhere safe. So these
2:40are the 10 mills. I usually just put it in the little cup holder and now we can go to the next
2:46step. So we're just going to pop out this lower trim piece now. It's just hanging it held
2:52down by clips if you can show that also. Little four clips right there. Easy way to clean it
2:57too because sometimes this gets really messy. And then you also have the Phillips head drives right
3:02here and here. So we're gonna remove those. Removing those screws.
3:10You remove the two screws right here. You're gonna have to pop this trim off. It's just
3:14held by clips but with the shift knob you need to put this in neutral or sport or whatever you
3:19need to to do to get this thing to wiggle out. Make sure your emergency brake is on
3:24and we're gonna have to slowly just
3:55So we're just in screwing all fours there's one right here
3:58There's one right here, and then there's two on the opposite side, and you're gonna have to take this whole cubby out
4:04so it's annoying that this little shift crap is here, but
4:09Best we can do can you do your best to pull it out already did the top one?
4:27excuse my French and there should be some clips for the cigarette lighter USB and
4:37ox so we're unplugging everything that's on the back of that right so we remove
4:45the big old cubby it's a lot bigger and deeper than you thought and here are a
4:52better look at the two cables now we can get to the bottom of the head unit
5:00remove the cubby you can see the two 10s and that's going to be what's holding the
5:04rest of the head unit in so unscrew the 10 here that's fine sound now we still
5:15have this really ridiculous thing right here just pull out the the the head unit
5:21You want me to get a towel or something?
5:27Just so the because there's metal brackets in this piece. We're not replete we're not replacing pull it up again. I
5:34just want to cover
5:36Your trim pieces right here
5:38Then we're gonna be unplugging everything from the back
5:42so
5:43They're held like little clips. These are the very familiar Toyota style and this is just the back of the head unit
5:49Yeah, you can't see it from your angle.
5:53So I'm just gonna unplug it and we're gonna be, thank you for going.
5:57Alright, so welcome to the present time.
6:01This head unit, so all this stuff is removable right here, um,, what you're able to put
6:06the new head unit, the, um, Roadnavi.
6:10So it's gonna be amazing, we have these plugs right here, let me just go over it
6:15if we haven't gone over it it yet.
6:18have, this is the antenna for FM and AM. This one is the 28 pin from Toyota. Generally it
6:25carries serial controls, sometimes backup camera, reverse signal trigger, same with this one. This
6:38one looks like it maybe be carrying the backup camera too, or the serial controls. So Toyota
6:48likes to change it up over the years so it makes it kind of a pain in the butt for compatibility.
6:53This is your main wire right here you got the 10 pin this controls everything pretty
6:59much the main source of power accessory power ground front speakers left and right of course
7:07illumination sometimes this one actually has the reverse camera too.
7:13But yeah it's only 10 pins so you can't have everything in this one wire this one
7:17right here carries the reverse speakers not reverse speakers the rear speakers
7:22left and right six pin this right here is an add-on we just did
7:30for the USBs but you're pretty much gonna have these five harnesses that you
7:36want to adapt to and we'll get to that right now. Now Roadnavi provides us
7:42with a pretty nice thing right here so we're gonna hook it up it has all this
7:54CAN bus stuff right now actually can we have my my assistant right here
7:58actually plug it in so he doesn't really install Android head units I'm just
8:01going to make it so it's pretty easy for anybody because they're really one size
8:10you can only fit one plug with a certain size so you can't mess it up as you as
8:18you as you can tell like you're like wow this does not look looks like five plugs
8:22right there's more than five plugs here too for seven they do that for
8:27compatibility again like I told you oh look at that it's really out of over
8:32exposed check this out so so plug in what you can and yeah let's see how it goes
8:41let's start with these white these white ones first because those are the main
8:44wants it. Oh nice that's the 10 pin that's the main the main business yeah six
9:01pins but it does look like eight because of the four by two layout but it's
9:06missing too. That's for the antenna for FNAM. There you go. Just like a USB. So do we have
9:28like five of them plugged in or missing? We're missing that 28 pin, right? Which is that one
9:33right there. It also has the included USB. So we have the USB right here. We're going to plug one right here.
10:01and there you go that's the setup we have right there five five plugs plus the
10:10USB external this one we are not using yeah so then we're gonna
10:29all of this everything's plugged in place up everything we plug in here pretty
10:33much just plug this bad boy right here you're like you're pretty much golden
10:39it works first someone just get it in a general location and you can start the
10:44car or not start the car just put the car in accessory mode see if it works
10:48oh that's that's a relief so we're just checking audio everything works so far
10:59terms of sound where we got wire I got the radio right now touch buttons work
11:07and the steering wheel controls because we might have to plug in the steering
11:11wheel controls negative negative so we have to do the steering wheel controls
11:14and we're gonna go through all that we're just going through the menus and
11:17make sure everything works which is good next thing we should try is Bluetooth
11:22so let's get that Bluetooth going so we got BT-6012 and then on our phone
11:28We see it. I think it's we're trying to pair it
11:32They have S10 right there. Boom. And we do have this protective film
11:37So if it looks a little dull, it's because we have that going on right now
11:42Alright, so we have everything plugged in. We, we're just gonna shoehorn everything back inside and we can
11:48can go through the interface and more in depth, but right now we have it installed kind of like that. Check it out
11:54Pretty simple. Pretty easy
11:56Alright everyone so we have the road Navi installed here look at it it's so
12:04beautiful I know it's a bit hard to see can we remove this
