Overview

A hands-on tour of the Roadnavi head unit John and a friend installed in a Camry (the install itself is in his companion video). The 720p tempered-glass screen has punchy colors and good viewing angles; it's bright but not the brightest, and the gloss is a bit reflective. His main gripe is usability: CarPlay and Android Auto live in an app called Auto Link inside the app drawer instead of on the home screen, and he couldn't easily swap the home-screen widgets. With an S10 plugged in, Android Auto was wired only; iPhones get wired and wireless CarPlay. The CAN bus integration is strong: car info shows the car type, door-lock settings, fuel consumption, climate changes on screen and tire pressure, and the steering-wheel controls worked without programming. The radio saves presets by holding a station, the reverse camera works (you can toggle trajectory lines), reverse volume suppression can be turned off, and the time zone needs changing from China. Under the hood: Android 10, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, which feels snappy. Fitment is good, though the chrome-to-silver finish doesn't match exactly and there are small gaps at the edges, similar to the factory unit.

    Video chapters

    Step by step

    1. 1

      Screen quality▶ 0:43

Tempered glass, a 720p panel that looks sharp from the driver's seat, good viewing angles and punchy colors. Max brightness is good but not the brightest John has seen, and the gloss finish is a bit reflective.

    2. 2

Find CarPlay and Android Auto▶ 1:45

They're not on the home screen. Open the app drawer and launch Auto Link.

Tip: John wishes Auto Link were front and center; he couldn't easily remove or replace the home-screen widgets.

    3. 3

      Connect your phone▶ 3:00

iPhones get wired and wireless CarPlay (it handshakes over Bluetooth, then switches to Wi-Fi). Android Auto was wired only on this unit, tested with an S10 over USB.

    4. 4

Car info over CAN bus▶ 4:45

The car-type setting shows the Camry profile. You get door-lock settings, fuel consumption, climate changes shown on screen and tire pressure.

    5. 5

      Steering-wheel controls▶ 5:36

They worked without any programming because the CAN bus handles them. There's no volume knob, so you'll lean on the wheel buttons.

    6. 6

      Radio presets and media▶ 6:39

Hold a station to save it as a preset. Video and music players read from USB or onboard storage, and BT Music plays from your phone.

    7. 7

      Reverse camera lines▶ 8:11

The factory reverse camera works. In the camera settings you can toggle the extra trajectory lines on or off.

    8. 8

      Reverse volume suppression▶ 9:41

By default the radio quiets down in reverse. You can turn that off in settings.

    9. 9

      Fix the time zone▶ 10:58

These units ship set to China time. Change it to your city (Los Angeles here) and pick 12- or 24-hour time.

    10. 10

      Specs▶ 12:00

Android 10 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, which keeps it zippy and adds some future-proofing. The Play Store is included and you can sideload apps.

    11. 11

      Fitment and finish▶ 15:10

Fitment is good. The finish goes from chrome to silver so it doesn't match exactly, and there are small gaps at the edges, though the factory unit had similar gaps.

0:00You guys already know, this is the Android head unit.

0:03Now, we can get to the bottom of the head unit.

    0:06Ooh, nice, that's the 10 pin.

0:08That's the main, the main business.

    0:21All right, everyone.

0:22So we have the Roadnavi installed here.

0:24Look at it, it's so beautiful.

0:26I know it's a little bit hard to see.

    0:27Can we remove this?

    0:29You do the honors.

    0:31Let's do it.

    0:33There you are.

0:34They can see it a little bit clearer.

0:35And yeah, actually let me kind of angle it.

0:39I'm sorry we don't have it angle at the best angle,

    0:41but here, check it out.

    0:43Mint screen.

0:44So this is tempered glass looking good.

0:47It's really hot in here in the car.

0:48So if we're sweating and huffing and puffing,

0:51it's because we don't want the wind noise

0:53or the, you know the AC the AC vents blowing

0:59panel so you can see it's really high quality in terms of viewing angles and

1:03colors is actually very punchy and let's see if I light can turn up the brightness

1:07or if this is the max brightness yeah so this is the max brightness it's a good

1:11brightness not the brightest screen I've seen yet especially because it's a

1:16gloss screen so it's kind of it's kind of reflective next off in terms of speed

1:23it's great resolution is actually very high it's one of the higher end one which

1:27which is a 720p, so if you look at it,

    1:31everything looks like retina, right?

1:34You don't see the pixels from the viewing angles

    1:35of where you're sitting.

1:38Now, the widgets and stuff looks really good.

1:41The one thing I had issues with is the first things

1:45I usually go through is where's car play,

1:47where's Apple car play and Android Auto.

1:50It's actually not in the main screen.

1:51You have to go to this app drawer and pull it up.

1:55And it's kind of called auto links.

1:56I feel like this should be front and center right? No room in this home screen.

2:02So, let's get rid of this nav yet.

2:08Okay, I don't know how to get rid of it.

2:14So that's just wallpaper. So it's not very intuitive.

2:23I want to change these widgets because I want to do the things that I use the

2:26the most or like change the widgets here which I can't do because auto-link

2:34should be like front and center right but yeah you can do this put it right here

2:40but hold it maybe nope nope so usually you should be able to hold something

2:50and then drag it to a trash can to make room other systems where if you drag it

2:55it actually pushes the one that you don't want out but yeah car auto link

3:00here and we have a S10 plugged in through, USB it is wired I believe if you have

3:08CarPlay Apple again Apple's on their game you get wired and wireless it

3:13hooks it hand shakes it through Bluetooth then cooks it up their Wi-Fi

3:17unfortunately for us Android folks it's only wired so we just go through the

3:23settings it continue and then Google Maps needs to change your

3:28locations and stuff like that which is fine we have Spotify here and we

3:36And don't forget, you know how Teslas have like this cool,

3:41I didn't know this, but Teslas have games

3:44and Android Auto actually has some cool games too.

3:46I've never played any of these, but they're pretty fun

3:49if you're eating food or whatever

3:51or you're waiting in line somewhere

3:53and you can play these games on your screen

3:55or your kids can play it.

    3:57So I, I'm pretty sure we can,

3:58we can change some of the settings to get that to work,

    4:01but, here are all of

4:03phone specific his phone has no ways or anything but if you have used ways and

4:09stuff like that you'll be able to get that set up. So there's Android Auto, great. I

4:15I want to buy, eventually guys, I want to buy an Apple, maybe

4:19an iPhone 10 or 8 or like an older one, it's just so I can test carplay for you guys.

4:25So that's in the works, so stay tuned that way you guys can see the Apple interface.

4:31It's just I'm a little short on cash right now so I can't just buy an iPhone.

4:45Let's check out car info. Car type. It knows that it's a Camry 2012 to 2015 2015.

4:53Looks like Ralfor uses the same infotainment system preferences. Door lock settings.

4:59You can change which is really cool. Fuel consumption.

5:04Kilometers per liter. Lock unlock feel by late nights.

5:09So climate settings. Another cool thing is this uses CAN bus. There's no settings

5:14here but if you changed your AC settings it actually shows right here I

5:18don't know if it had that before but it's a really nice would you call it's a

5:22pretty nice UI right sharp clean easy to read yeah and then it

5:27shows me the AC on actually because amp settings such like that now we didn't

5:36control any for the steering wheels if you can see that the steering wheel

5:42controls we didn't of program it but it does this seem to be working like the

5:47CAN bus handles all that so you can see them up some people say there's no volume

5:51knob and that's kind of knowing for them and that's true but I usually use my

5:56steering wheel controls anyways so there's that so just going through the

6:02menu consumption shows all that so this is maybe too much for information

6:07for people but it's nice to have it. Actually shows the pressure tire pressure

6:11system so cool that it actually has it tied still has a little robot dude I kind

6:17of want to get rid of him but I don't know how but you know it reminds me of if

6:22you ever if you're an OG you ever went on Microsoft Word and there was a little

6:26paperclip guy he kind of reminds of him and does a little dance you know I'm

6:31talking about that little paper clipie yeah using here goes the radio

6:39Do we have any, do we have any presets, or do we, do we got reset for the floor, yeah we unplugged it though.

6:51To say something you just hold it, I believe, and there you go.

6:57So radio works perfectly fine, video, music that's, pretty self-explanatory.

7:02so this is like a video directory which we don't have anything.

7:05Plug in a USB to put videos in here

7:06plug in a USB to put videos in here or have it stored in there.

7:10I don't know how much storage does someone have in particular, but we can check that in the settings.

7:15Music is the same thing if you want things on board.

7:18Bluetooth is for your setup, BT music is for the Bluetooth that is hooked up to the phone right

    7:23now and.

7:35car settings which is just, kind of like

8:05So if also if you're watching YouTube, and it doesn't work make. Make sure you have this to be off

8:11When we're in reverse so we do have the reverse working

8:15But there's extra lines. You see how there's extra lines we should

8:22I think the blue lines are the extra lines, so let's get rid of that

8:30So now it's easier to read but it doesn't move

    8:33So

8:37You want to have that on

8:39So you kind of play with it for some reason I think we should have those trajectory lines

    8:54What do you think?

8:56Or is it does that look too crazy? I think the trajectory lines is fine

    9:03Yeah

9:07I'm front cam this one doesn't ever come front cam, but it's we I thought we'd be able to disable the blue lines

9:11But it's the opposite it disables

9:15There were you guys now you guys know that was under what video yeah

9:20Navigation we don't really use it

9:23Because we use our phone navi our phone navigation so much faster that it's just that's just the way you should go

9:29Here's about the vice if you want to

9:33see the firmware version and all that common sleep mode

9:37assistive touch boot logo oh wow it's all in there so reverse volume

9:45suppression is basically when you're in reverse it quiets a down the

9:49radio so then you can sense in your other senses like you can turn that off

9:53I don't like that assistive touch that one is if it's like an accessibility thing

    9:59I don't I don't like it's usually like a circle it's cool as a slip-on

10:06Yeah, so far the ui's it's a lot different than the other Android autos Android head units I've been doing

10:13Road Navi has a very clean setup. That's kind of friend like user-friendly in my opinion

10:19car type so we already went there it was a Camry preferences we already went

10:24there consumption so we. We already did the car info and settings app installers if

10:29you want to if you want to manually if you have like certain apps, you want

10:38to install kind of if you develop them or you found them on the internet you can do that that's not on the play store auto link we talked about that's

10:41android auto and apple car play and these are kind of self-explanatory nothing

10:48we really talk about and YouTube, so it does have the play store I know that's

10:53important for some settings wise this is more stuff now we can go into like what

10:58this thing has right now the standard time is always China because these units

11:03made in China. So we can change it to Los Angeles or not. United States. Then we can do Los Angeles.

11:20Boom. You like military time, right? Yeah, but we can keep it as standard.

11:26Okay, so then we have right now. I don't know if that's the correct time.

    11:30It's not 1.39 is it?

12:00If you guys were curious on our configuration looks like we have eight gigs of RAM. Which is just absolutely ridiculous, honestly

12:09Right about device here's more information wall number

12:16I'm trying to look at the specs but it is using Android 10

12:19I'll put the rest of the specs in here

    12:49Which is crazy

12:52Then it has a hundred and twenty eight storage again. I think that's crazy

12:58I don't store things into here, but some. People do and I think there'ses

13:04You can store more stuff using USB so 128 gigs

13:08Storage with eight gigs of ram

    13:11In a car infotainment system

13:13It is zippy and I. Guess that's some future proofing for it

    13:17yeah

    13:19That's the whole

13:21The install was actually really easy had all the CAN bus stuff

    13:25again

13:27We did the we did an install on a

    13:49I think

13:52I think it's really snappy. It is bright but not super bright.

13:54It's definitely usable in most use cases.

13:57It's a shame that usability and usability is not there.

14:07But I think with a little bit of t-tinkering, I can figure it out.

14:13I agree, so if it was me, I would change these ones right here to maybe Bluetooth audio,

14:19Android Auto, and, I don't know, backup camera. I don't know if you can access your backup camera here,

14:26that's actually good. Let's see if you can see your backup camera. But sometimes you just want

14:31to see your backup camera. I know this is an OEM camera, so for my car you can do it at

14:38at all times, but yeah, so.

14:41If you can change these little widgetss right here,

14:43these icons to things you actually use the most,

14:47like Android Auto, Bluetooth Audio, and I don't know.

14:52What else you would use, but that would be great.

    14:55Bluetooth, yeah.

14:56Spotify, but you can just use Android Auto

14:59and it has all Spotify on there, there.

15:00Yeah, and it just plays right there, so.

15:04Yeah, if you guys are interested in this head unit,

15:06links down below and I'll link, you know,

15:10this is,, I actually really like this unit.

    15:11the fitment wise it's, it's good.

    15:14The finishes are good.

    15:15It doesn't match exactly.

15:17So you can see it's chrome right here

    15:19and turns into silver.

15:21This matte plastic matches really well.

15:24Fitment wise it's, you can kind of see these edges

    15:27right here.

15:28I work crazily enough the OEM unit had the same thing

15:32but I would say the OEM was a little bit better

15:35but it still had these gaps, which surprised me,

    15:38to say the least.

16:02you can play with it for a bit and then you guys can head out. Cool.
