Yes — you can install iDoing on the iDoing 10.2" Android 12 head unit for the Toyota Highlander 3 (XU50) 2013–2018, per the product link in the description with a 25 min DIY job. Pry off the dash trim and vents, pull the factory radio (four 10mm bolts), plug in iDoing's pre-built harness, CAN bus and FM booster, test the.
Overview
John installs an iDoing 10.2" head unit in a friend's 2014 Highlander so it gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. He compares the screens up front: the factory unit feels like plastic ("like a Nintendo DS"), while the iDoing has a glass touchscreen. Removal is all clips and 10mm bolts: pry the trim from the corner, pull the climate/hazard panel, remove two 10mm bolts at the bottom, pop the upper trim and both vents (held by clips and hooks), then remove the last two 10mm bolts and pull the heavy factory radio. iDoing builds the main ports into the unit, so most factory plugs (10-pin, 6-pin, 28-pin) go straight in; the CAN bus box, FM adapter (with an orange booster lead) and a USB adapter that keeps the factory USB location cover the rest. With everything plugged in, the clock, audio and the factory reverse camera all worked right away (static guide lines, not ones that move with the wheel). John tucks the GPS antenna under the dash on its magnet, adds the Wi-Fi lead, microphone and spare USBs, transfers the yellow clips from the old unit, and calls the finished fitment about 99%. He rates it one of the easier installs he's done.

Step by step
- 1
Compare the screens▶ 0:41
The factory screen feels like plastic; the iDoing's is glass (shipped with a screen protector on). John calls the difference staggering.
- 2
Pry the lower trim▶ 1:22
Start at the very corner with a pry tool, then pull. It's all held by clips; a plastic pry tool gives more leverage where it's tight.
- 3
Release the climate / hazard panel▶ 2:16
Push the clips out and pull. At the very bottom, push it toward the car (down) and the whole panel comes off. The piece behind it is just a cord holder, not a plug.
- 4
Remove the two lower 10mm bolts▶ 2:50
That reveals two 10mm bolts. Remove them with a ratchet and keep them in the cup holder.
- 5
Pop the upper trim and both vents▶ 3:22
The upper trim piece pulls up by hand. That gives access to the vents: one pulls out (clips), the other is held by hooks. John used a small clip tool to pry it.
- 6
Remove the top 10mm bolts and pull the radio▶ 4:07
Behind the vents are the last two 10mm bolts (four total). Don't drop them into the dash. Then pull the head unit out.
- 7
Unplug the factory radio▶ 4:50
There are a lot of plugs, each a little different, including the AC control unit. The factory radio is surprisingly heavy.
- 8
Plug in the built-in ports▶ 6:58
iDoing builds the main ports into the unit, so the factory plugs go straight in like Legos: the 10-pin, then the 8-pin beside it at the bottom. One leftover plug is for the radio, which has its own adapter.
- 9
Add the extra harness▶ 8:37
The included diagram shows where each extra harness plugs in. The XM radio lead isn't retained; FM is, through the orange-and-black adapter.
- 10
USB and CAN bus▶ 9:54
The gray plug is the factory USB; iDoing's adapter keeps the stock USB location working. The CAN bus box ("the brains" that talks to the Toyota) plugs in next to the iDoing sticker. A spare plug is there for redundancy because Toyota changes connectors over the years.
- 11
Connect the FM booster and test USB▶ 11:15
Hook the orange wire to the FM adapter for a stronger radio signal (it works without it, but weaker). Plug the gray-to-green USB adapter into the Type-A port, the right way round.
- 12
Recap the wiring▶ 12:40
10-pin, 6-pin and 28-pin plugs, the radio lead, the CAN bus box, antennas and the USB. John leaves GPS and 4G off until he knows the unit works.
- 13
Mock-fit and power on▶ 13:39
Loosely place the unit to check fitment: it sits flush up top. The clock and head unit came on.
- 14
Check the reverse camera▶ 14:32
Shift into reverse and the factory camera shows with no extra steps; back in Park it returns to CarPlay. The guide lines don't move with the steering wheel, and the picture looks okay on the bigger screen.
- 15
Mount the GPS antenna▶ 17:19
The car's own navigation is a last resort if your phone dies. John sticks the magnetic GPS antenna under the dash rather than on top, which he finds ugly and harder to do, and still gets signal.
- 16
Plug in USBs and route them▶ 18:01
Ports are labeled on the bottom of the unit. John adds extra USBs and fishes them so the owner can choose where they end up.
- 17
Wi-Fi, mic and subwoofer leads▶ 19:43
Plug in the blue Wi-Fi lead for a better signal and the microphone. The RCA lead is for a subwoofer; AUX isn't used, to keep the wiring clean.
- 18
Transfer the yellow clips▶ 21:03
The new unit's mounts have only the black part, so peel the yellow clips off the old unit and fit them in the same spot so it latches tight. The factory 10mm mounting points aren't reused.
- 19
Slide it in and reassemble▶ 22:07
Tuck the wiring and slide the unit in. No electrical tape needed. Reinstall the vents and trim and plug the AC control back in.
- 20
Final check▶ 23:18
John calls the fitment 99% there and says it looks like a 2022 Highlander. The AC works and everything powers up. He calls it one of the easier installs he's done.

0:00All right.
0:01All.
0:03All right, we have the iDoing right here.
0:19Awesome car.
0:21We also have today, it's the Toyota.
0:23What car is this again?
0:27Highlander, what year?
0:3014.
0:3114.
0:32Looking all good.
0:33Check this out.
0:34We got the
0:35the new head unit coming in from, we already did the unboxing, making sure everything looks good.
0:40Woo!
0:41Wait, look how the difference in the screen.
0:44You can definitely tell this one looks like a Nintendo DS.
0:48It looks like it's not like an iPhone kind of touch screen, it's just like one of those old
0:52school, you know what I'm talking about, it feels plasticky.
0:58This one's actually glass, but it has a little screen protector on it right now, but man the
1:03difference is staggering.
1:04So today we're going to be doing an install on the 2014 Highlander.
1:09I really like this car, it's still modern, so nice.
1:12The owner right there wants wants to get Apple CarPlay going and wants to make sure everything looks
1:19good.
1:20So we're going to do that today.
1:21Check it out.
1:22All right, so I already had it pre-loosened, but what I used is I got used this to this tool
1:27right here guys, and I started right here and I pride it at the very corner.
1:39I pulled it here, pulled it here, and sometimes you need a little bit more leverage, so I have
1:43this plastic pry tool, and I hit this angle right here.
1:47It's all held by clips, so I'll show you these clips that gave me the most trouble.
1:51This very corner, it's just a straight clip, so when you're pulling it, try's try
1:54to pull it towards you.
1:56Don't try to pull it it an an angle or anything, but pulling towards you is the way to go.
2:02After that you're going to have unplug these harnesses right here, this is for the
2:07climate control.
2:08The reason why we're doing this is just so we have more leverage, and when we're moving
2:13this out and just more space, so
2:15you should be able to just push this clip right here and pull it out.
2:19Same with this, push this clip out and pull it out.
2:26All right for this one
2:30at the very bottom, and push it towards
2:34the car, so push it down and then the whole thing will come off.
2:38So now your climate control, your hazard switch, everything, is good to go
2:42rounds. This is actually not a plug apparently, it's just a holder,
2:46like a just to the cords and let's get that out of the way.
2:50Now after that you're going to reveal
2:53these 10mm and we're going to have to unscrew these 10mm.
2:56so let me get the 10 mil. Alright so we're going to the 10 I'm just using this here but you can
3:04just use a regular ratchet now put this in the cup holder that way you don't lose it so we've got
3:11the bottom part now we're going to hit the top part after you get these two down so you're not
3:17shouldn't be able to pull it up and I will show you how to remove the top. Alright so for this
3:24trim piece right here you can just pop it up by just pulling it now. The reason why
3:28we're doing that is we're trying to get access to we're trying to pop this this
3:32vent out and you you don't have to really take this whole thing out if you want
3:36it just pulls out it's just being held' held by clips and that just gives access to
3:41these vents out boom vent is out how awesome is that very modular and then
3:48you want to pop this vent out too now it's being held by hooks
3:53All right so to remove this it also just pulls out I use this little clip tool and
4:02I hit it from here I use this to kind of like pry it and you can see it that's
4:07gonna help you. Now what that does is it reveals the 10mm right here and then it
4:16removes 10mm on the other side and that should be enough to remove the
4:20and we can put the new one in and that's gonna be the hardest part
4:23Now my tool does fit in of here. Boom! A-10 and then this. Make sure you don't drop
4:40it into the abyss. Happens all the time. And now I should be able to just pull the
4:45head unit. Boom! It's usually always held by four. Now there's gonna be a bunch
4:51of wires in the back. And we're gonna unplug all of them. One, two. Two. Now this thing's
4:56is heavy. I don't know why it's so heavy, but it is.
5:01The Android one isn't as heavy
5:04There is going to be some weight reduction, you know your car is going to be a little
5:09faster.
5:10Shave a few pounds, wow this thing has so many plugs, a lot of plugs which is interesting.
5:23I know you guys can't see but I'm just, I'm plugging it you just try to pry it.
5:30Each plug is a- little bit different.
5:33AC control unit you just want
6:25already plugged in to each other
6:58iDoing is the only company that does this where it has the ports the main ports already built in
7:05which is super nice we're going to be able to plug it in here.
7:11So I'm at you like Legos, there's the 2018 this one is going to be a radio
7:20which there's an adapter for so let's not worry about that.
7:30There's the main wires right here.
7:31This is the 10 pins, so if you count them,
7:35, you're going to count 10 pins
7:38If you want to plug that in to this bad boy too, which is at the very bottom, this is the 8 pin, which
7:55goes right below it, or right next to it side by side, so we've plugged in 3 plugs so far in.
8:08this is for your USB so we'll check out that adapters later. And this one doesn't fit into
8:15anything here. Now looking at this, this looks like it's the aux cord or the reverse camera. I,
8:21I'm going to have to look into more detail with that. But the bag also has more wires. Wires.
8:25This is not all the plugs. Alright, so the next thing we want to do is we,
8:37You're going to have a little bit more harnesses here and we're just going to plug this bad boy in to the right spot
8:45I'm plugging in
8:47It will show you a diagram on where to plug it in and this one's not to tell you to plug this on
8:54The torch not on the back of the of the head unit. So it's really
9:07are covered besides these antennas. So this is for XM radios. Now we're not
9:14going to use XM radios anymore so unfortunately we're not going to retain
9:17that. And then this one's for FM which we can retain. I will show you the
9:24adapter. So here's the adapter for the FM. It's orange and black. We're
9:30going to plug that bad boy right in, in here. So it looks like that, and now
9:37which is right here so we're almost plugging everything's almost plugged in
9:44that was originally plugged into the old unit this was the AC control so we
9:50don't need that and these are the the wires now there's one thing that we
9:54haven't pluggeded in yet either spew it's going to be this gray one right here this one is your
10:00USB, which iDoing actually provide a, adapter. So you'll be able to use your USB, either under
10:09here or under here. You're going to be able to use the stock location USB, which is great.
10:15Plug that in. And then this end, we're going to have to put an adapter in. I'll show you
10:22how to do that. And now this is like the brains to communicate with the Toyota. And that
10:28is going to go right here.
10:29right next to this iDoing sticker boom so we got that plugged in now we do
10:38have an extra one now that's why I have the back of camera and stuff
10:41like that or not it's just redundancy because other does change it over the years
10:47which is great that they have that area covered now I want to plug in the
10:53USBs and I'll show you how to do that. So a huge bag with stuff right now. I need to
11:00plug that in so let's get a reverse camera which I'm gonna plug in as well and it
11:06also has little sticker which I'm gonna plug it in and it also
11:09also has your Wi-Fi antenna too. So this is gonna be very bottom left by
11:15FM AM radio. And then you see this orange wire right here?
11:27You want to
11:28to use that orange wire to hook up with that FM radio so then you
11:32have a boost signal. If you don't plug this in it will still work but
11:37your radio signal will be weaker so you want to have this orange wire plugged in
11:41right there. Let me see if I can move it down so you can see a little bit more of the
11:46So we have that plugged in and we have keys and stuff like that, which we don't have to worry about right now.
11:52Reverse signal, amp controls, there's some additional stuff.
11:56We don't need to worry about, I just need to get the FM, not the FM, at USB, so we can test the USB.
12:03So that USB one that comes to the adapter with the green tip, with the gray one right there,
12:09plug it into the Type A plug.
12:13Yeah, make the right way, make sure it's the right way because, you know, the USB, the old school one, it
12:19only goes in one way.
12:21I'm going to use this purple wire right here to plug in, this is a four pin and there's
12:28a four pin right here.
12:31So I'm gonna pan over real quick, and I'll show you guys the wiring that I have initially so everything's plugged in
12:40Let's go over real quick because it is a little little confusing 10-pin 6-pin 28-pin
12:47I have this. This black wire hanging from
12:49This back and it's going into this other harness. I don't know how many pins that one is and that pretty much covers everything
12:57thing. This one's the USB. This gray to green. This wire that I'm holding right
13:03here and I'm shaking around. That is for your radio. This is your CAN bus. So it
13:08talks about, it gives you basically car information. You want to have that.
13:13Antenna. And stuff like that is plugged into this corner. USBs and FM/AM radio.
13:20These are GPS antennas and the 4Gs. I'm not gonna have this installed
13:25right now. I just want to make sure the head unit works before I add everything.
13:29So let's kind of get this oriented in a nice fashion. It's probably going to sit right here.
13:39Whoa, the screen is so much bigger. Just kind of fish it back there. Make sure things fit.
13:48We don't even know if it fits properly yet because it looks like it does.
13:52And then we're going to have it like some, which is going to have it loosely placed in
13:59just to give you an idea on the fitment goes up top looks like it's going to be flush.
14:27The clock, everything works right now, and the head unit is on.
14:32Okay, so the reverse camera is working,, we don don't do anything extra.
14:38We just turned the car on and we put it in reverse.
14:41I just want to show you guys that you can put it in park again.
14:45It will go back to your car play.
14:48When you throw it in reverse it triggers
15:00like move the steering wheel and stuff does it show okay so it doesn't it doesn't move with the
15:07the lines but the lines are at least you have the camera right there with like extra lines
15:11some cars will have the trajectory show depending on the steering wheel input but
15:16yeah that's just what we wanted to show right there great things are good it is blown up so
15:22it diss a bigger picture I
15:23The quality is okay, I don't know how the quality is normally is, but from my experience
15:29the quality just looks okay, but it is on the bigger screen so it's a
16:23It's not going to
17:15So it's called like offline, but it's connected to the satellites
17:19Now the car actually has a built in gps
17:23Like maps, but it's not as good as Apple Maps ways or carplay or Google Maps
17:30So you generally don't want to need to use it
17:33But I the reason why install is maybe your phones dead or you lost your phone in your loss
17:37So you want to use this as like a last resort use the GPS on your car navigation system makes sense
17:45So it's just held by a magnet and I just put it right there. Some people put it on the very top, but honestly, it looks pretty ugly and it's harder to install.
17:53So if you want to do that, you can do that, but I usually, just put it here. And I generally, generally get signal below right there too.
18:01I like things to be reversible and very easy to install later on. So here, here's the USB's, I'm going to plug
18:09the USB here and all this stuff is
18:16labeled on the bottom too if you want
18:17you're like so which one is the USBs you
18:19can check the bottom of the head unit
18:21it will show a a wiring diagram which is
18:24nice so check this out worry during
18:28your answer but for me I I know
18:39Plugged it in, now we have extra USBs.
18:45So we already have a USB coming through here,
18:47but is it cool if I open this door?
18:50Yeah, go ahead.
18:51Not the nesco, but.
19:15I'll be able to wire it. So we're gonna fish it, and have
19:24at the very bottom, but I can't really show that because it's actually really tight right now, but yeah, we'll have as an option if you don't want the USBs right there, we'll find a different solution.
19:33Okay, and then let's go through the other wires here.
19:36So we went through all the wires for that.
19:41The rest of the wires are these ones right here.
19:43a Wi-Fi one, the other one had amp controls and reverse so you want to plug this blue one in
19:54that way you have a better Wi- I signal you about better Wi-Fi signal that means
20:03this microphone again the last wire that week we are talking
20:08about is this one right here. This one is if you want to have a subwoofer- or you
20:11want to use RCA jacks out so you have subwoofer, right there- check that out.
20:15You got some other stuff and we're not going to use that aux to.
20:19right there we're not going to use it. You can plug it in but again I
20:24try to keep the setup as clean as possible. You look at it right now and
20:29it looks like a rat's nest so you don't want to like add to that. But yeah that's
20:33It's pretty much it, we have everything plugged in.
20:36Now we have we have to do everything in reverse
20:39and I I'll show you the finished product.
20:44Put the USB's right here, circles it around.
20:51Now, now the
21:03So, you see this yellow clip right here, the new one
21:09one doesn't have that, it just has the black part so you want to transfer it over.
21:16So slowly peel like this and then it comes out and you want to put it right here.
21:24It just goes in the same spot.
21:25That way it will actually latch on pretty tight.
21:29with this right here now some people ask do we reuse these mounting holes generally you
21:30right here
21:32Now some people ask
21:34Do we reuse these mounting holes??
21:38Generally you can't use the mounting so the 10 mils and stuff like that. We're not gonna reuse
21:44Now I'm taking this part out
21:46But if you want to have it really secure you can you could find a way, this is just like a
21:51a double DIN setup and
21:55Yeah, we just don't use tha
21:58All right, so old head unit
22:09just going to slide it back in, kind of tuck
22:12it's actually a pretty clean install because I don't have to use any electric
22:16tape or nothing like like that which is just great it's just great and spot those
22:27clips it's gonna be like public that some pressure so let's see if we
22:30Some pressure
22:39Let's pop it out a little bit. Now we're gonna put these vents in
23:15Now
23:18Looks really good. The fitment is I
23:22Would say like 99 percent there
23:25it's I don't remember how the OEM one looks and I'm not sure if the OEM was a hundred percent either but
