Toyota Tundra 2007–2013 / Sequoia: iDoing Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Head Unit Install

Upgrade an older Android unit in a Tundra to the iDoing 10.2": what each factory plug does, a power test, Bluetooth and wireless Android Auto, steering-wheel mapping, Wi-Fi and GPS antennas.

Yes — you can install iDoing on the iDoing 10.2" Android 12 head unit for the Toyota Tundra XK50 2007–2013 / Sequoia XK60 2008–2017 (listing in the description) with a 22 min DIY job. Upgrade an older Android unit in a Tundra to the iDoing 10.2": what each factory plug does, a power test, Bluetooth and wireless Android Auto, steering-wheel.

Overview

This Tundra already had an early Android head unit, and John swaps it for a newer, faster iDoing unit with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. He walks through the factory harness: the FM antenna, the Toyota 10-pin (accessory and constant power, ground, front speakers, dimmer and sometimes amp control), the 6-pin for the rear speakers, the steering-wheel/accessory plugs and the blue USB plug. Plugging in just the 10-pin and 6-pin first confirms it powers on (instant boot) with audio. Bluetooth pairing uses code 0000, then the phone hands off to wireless Android Auto. The bag of extra harnesses covers the backup camera and amp control; the included Toyota USB adapter didn't match this truck's plug. The blue 4-pin Wi-Fi antenna is important for a strong wireless signal, the AM/FM antenna works (presets by holding a station), and steering-wheel buttons are learned by resistance in the steering-wheel control app, with Mode mapped to Home or a camera shortcut. He mounts the GPS antenna low, skips the 4G antennas, SIM, extra USBs and RCA outputs, and prefers the screen's built-in mic. The trim is just clipped in, and the fit has nice even clearance with one slightly loose spot.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Know the factory plugs▶ 0:51

FM antenna; the Toyota 10-pin carries accessory (key-on) power, constant power, ground, front speakers, dimmer and sometimes amp control; the 6-pin carries the rear speakers; other plugs are steering-wheel controls, backup camera and accessories; the blue plug is the USB.

Tip: The 10-pin and 6-pin are the main ones, and they only go in one way.

  2. 2

Power test with just the 10-pin and 6-pin▶ 2:30

Plug in only the main connectors, rest the unit gently and turn the key to accessory. It booted instantly with audio.

  3. 3

    Pair Bluetooth▶ 3:18

Open the Bluetooth app, search, select your phone and enter 0000. It then prompts you to start Android Auto wirelessly.

  4. 4

    Wireless Android Auto▶ 4:37

Spotify, messages, calls and even Teams calls and games show up. John prefers Android Auto even over his Tesla's system.

  5. 5

    Plug in the rest▶ 6:33

Use a towel so the dash doesn't get scratched. Plug in the bigger connector and the extra harness from the bag (backup camera, reverse, amp control). This truck has the JBL system, but it wasn't needed.

  6. 6

    Try the USB adapter▶ 8:47

The USB is wired directly to the head unit, so there's little slack. The included Toyota USB adapter didn't fit this truck's plug.

Warning: Toyota uses two USB plug styles (gray and black). You may need a different adapter, about $10, or route a USB lead to the glove box.

  7. 7

    Connect the Wi-Fi antenna▶ 11:50

Plug in the blue 4-pin Wi-Fi antenna (it's marked). Without it the wireless signal is weak.

  8. 8

    Map the steering-wheel buttons▶ 13:26

Open the steering-wheel control app from the app drawer. Each button sends a different resistance, so press and hold a button, then pick its function on screen: volume down, volume up, previous, next. John set Mode as Home; you can also make it mute or a camera shortcut.

  9. 9

Check USB charging and radio▶ 15:32

The USB charges the phone faster than the factory port. AM/FM picks up stations; hold a station to save it as a preset.

  10. 10

    Optional extras▶ 16:47

The leftover leads are 4G (with a SIM slot), extra USBs and RCA inputs/outputs for a subwoofer or amp. You don't need them for CarPlay or Android Auto, which use your phone's connection.

  11. 11

    Mount the GPS antenna▶ 17:36

It's a backup if you lose your phone, like a TomTom or Garmin. Screw it onto the GPS port and tuck it low; it still gets a signal.

  12. 12

    Skip the external mic▶ 19:13

In John's test the external mic sounded the same as the screen's built-in mic, so it isn't worth routing.

  13. 13

Push it in and check the fit▶ 20:09

The trim is held by plastic clips. Clearance is even all the way around, with one slightly loose spot. The glass screen looks great.

0:13Alright, so we have a, this is the Tundra, and we actually have an Android head unit in here already.

0:22Now when the Android head units first came out, they weren't as good as they are right now.

0:28There's the iDoing one to be a much more powerful, better technology, and, well,

0:34I have the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and that's the reason why we're upgrading to the newer one.

0:39and you can even tell just the difference. Alright, so we have it for the most part

0:51installed and, and the unit's removed and this is the OEM harness. I'll go over the

0:58wiring because that's usually the most difficult

0:59difficult part when it comes to installing and tell you what each thing

1:03does. Right here is for your FM radio. I'll go to this one right here. This is

1:10the Toyota 10 pin and this Toyota 10 pin carries most of the main functions

1:15when it comes to accessory which is when you turn your key on it powers it on. It also has constant

1:21power, grounding, controls of front speakers, dimmer and sometimes controls the amp which

1:28looks like it's missing those two pins right there. So that's that. Right here is generally

1:35the steering wheel controls but anyhow it likes to move things around or back of camera if this

1:40car had it same with these ones they're just like accessories this one right

1:45here is blue this is for you USB which is right

1:49here so if you want to retain the USB which we're we're going to do so you can

1:53plug in the USB to charge the iPhone or Android Auto Apple Card Play you, you can

1:58plug in it right there. Lastly this is also the main one this is

2:04ones for the rear speakers. Driver rear, passenger rear. And that's all the

2:10cords we need to worry about. Now the main ones were the 10 pin and the 6 pin

2:16which carries the speakers and that's going to be located right here. 10 pin and

2:20Now they only go one way, so you plug it in and it will just fit in the burp.

2:28You don't have to force it or anything.

2:30anything like that. So we're actually going to do that right now. We're just

2:34plugging the 10 pin and not really worry about the other stuff and the 6 pin.

2:41The reason why I do this is just to make sure the unit works and fires up. We're

2:46just gonna place this gently on here and put the keys on and hopefully it

2:54turns on. So I'm putting an accessory in the fires right up. So we have the

3:10screen showing up and Instant Boot which was insane for me and now

3:13we can hear the audio so we're in good shape here. The next thing I would want

3:18to do is to test it is just check up Bluetooth and play a song. Do you want

3:24to use your phone. So we got a bluetooth here and then we go to the little app hit

3:33that search and now it's going to go look for my phone right here. So it says I

4:03it so it's zero zero zero clear sure and then- then it's gonna prompt me to do

4:14Android Auto. So you can geti get out of here and then

4:21believe it's car

4:23or Z. it's 2.

4:34So they use Android or Apple?

4:36Android.

4:37Okay so it's all wireless and you're driving now this is n

4:41main feature that everybody wants to do when they have a car

4:45is just use Android Auto. I actually have a Tesla

4:53I actually have a Tesla and I actually prefer using Android Auto. It's just faster, smooth

5:00the search is better and the resolution and everything looks so clean so more of

5:05it's just a better experience and this is Android Auto it's just amazing so I

5:13have Spotify open right now and then things are installed on my phone would

5:22just for like charging messages if I if someone text me it'll show up right

5:28here which is really nice if I get calls it's all it's all right here and it's all

5:32like it's like you have a 2022 tundra maybe even better weather and stuff like

5:38that you can even do teams calls you know you're working get your teams call

5:43right there game relates if you have kids they can play games now I haven't

5:49tested this but kind of like how Tesla has games you can put games and the

5:55I've never messed with these but that's.

5:58That's what game snacks is it's included in Android so it's everything on the phone I

6:03didn't sell that so great we know it works we have sound and it's all wireless

6:09which is it's beautiful so let's just finish the other wiring and then we're

6:16pretty much set here because we know that it works. Alright so we have it working

6:23when it comes to audio, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay so the next thing we

6:29want to do is make sure the steering control work which we don't have plugged in yet.

6:33I'm just going to have to pull this a little bit. Do you have a towel or something?

6:38I just don't want to scratch. So I usually like plastic my scratch and stuff so I kind of like

6:44using a towel to hold it where we can show, just

6:48to be a little bit more safe.

6:50Now, we have other plugs in here, which we can use to plug in.

6:55So I try to plug in anything you see.

7:11So we plugged in this bigger pin.

7:15Not sure if that's the steering wheel controls.

7:22I'm going to pull out this bag that has so many harnesses,

7:25which is a little bit daunting.

7:32But this, this one will plug into the back of your head unit, if you want to have, if you don't have a backup camera do you?

7:40If you want a backup camera, you can and you can the install it, we don't have a backup camera here and it has more functionalities like

7:50Reverse amp control, this car had like the JBL system which it doesn't keys and stuff like that

7:57that so we're going to just plug it in but we don't have that functionality and

8:01we have another USB so we're going to test out the USB as well let's just

8:07focus on this we're just going to plug it to the back because it does have some

8:12extra wiring and actually shows you which way to plug it in I just like

8:37having everything plugged in in general just so we know we have all the

8:47functionalities next is the USB so because it has it directly plugged into the

8:54head unit you don't have like an extension harness you know you wouldn't

8:58have another harness where it's in between it usually gives you a little

9:02more wiggle room so it's a little harder to record jeez I can't even untwist the twist time

9:08Yeah I was doing it the right way and then

9:12I did it the wrong way. So USB and then again it really only fits one way. I can

9:21show you guys after I have everything. So we did the USB right here and so we

9:35have to get that original OEM harness. So right now we have radio and then we

9:40have this extra one that we are not using then there's the USB and there's

9:49another one. These extra ones might control another function

9:53but it might not even matter. So

10:00because we're trying to hook up the USB.

10:05This is for the radio, which we don't need,

10:08because we're just going to be,

10:11depending on your harness sometimes,

10:13Toyota has a different plug.

10:15This plug actually just plugs straight into the back,

10:19which I will show you as well.

10:21So this is a USB adapter to have it so we should be able to use this

10:30that's spee adapter to have it so we should be able to use this USB that's in theory if it fits

10:32so we should be able to plug it in like this

10:41if it doesn't then that's a shame

10:55it looks like it's a different plug

10:58So unfortunately, this plug doesn't fit.

11:02Again, that's a bummer.

11:05But you would have to buy a different one.

11:08I know Toyota uses two different styles.

11:10So if you look at this one right here,

11:13this one usually plugs into a gray version.

11:16And then this, this blue one usually

11:17plugs into a black one.

11:18So I actually had the black one on another car

11:22where I had to use it for a Subaru at crazy enough.

11:25and that adapter is 10 bucks.

11:28So we won't be able to retain this

11:30with a kit that they installed.

11:33They provided us, unfortunately.

11:37But we can route that USB somewhere else if necessary.

11:46And let me show you, so that's about it.

11:50Next off is we have this blue wire, which we do need,

11:53so we can have a stronger WiFi signal.

11:55Now we were using Android Auto earlier without the antenna.

11:59so the signal is probably really weak.

12:02When we plug this in, the antenna's gonna be a lot stronger,

12:05we'll be able to get better reception.

12:09This one's a four pin,

12:10and then you can tell by where it's marked right here,

12:14so you can tell where you should put it.

12:17Boom.

12:18So now we actually have an antenna

12:19and we should have better signal.

12:22And here iss the FM/AM radio antenna,

12:27which we plugged in, which is nice.

12:30So right now AM FM radio this one is not needed. This is if you have a backup camera

12:37USB which we just kind of have it dangling right here now

12:41We can route this to the glove box or somewhere else or we can purchase a adapter so we can use this

12:49This is this blue one right here is our Wi-Fi signal antenna. So you want to make sure you have that plugged in I

12:56I believe it's a steering control that I'm not too sure yet and then we have our main

13:01main one which is a 10 pin 6 pin.

13:03So let's flip this around and see if we can get our serial with our

13:16Controls

13:26to show, because it's actually really bright. You have to go to your application drawer

13:31and then you follow by control. So let me zoom out. Hopefully you guys can see it might

13:38look kind of blurry. But you see how when I'm pressing the buttons there's some kind

13:44of reaction. So the way steering controls work is each button has its own resistance.

13:53What that means is when I press this minus it's basically putting some resistance into

13:58the wire, let's say 10, and I put the volume up, maybe resistant 15, next 20, etc.

14:09So it's not mapped right now, what you do is you hold the volume down, you go to the

14:14screen and you set this volume down and use that a number, then I hit volume up,

14:23it's volume up in the previous song. Next song, and there's a bunch of ones that you don't have here,

14:34which is fine. For this mode button, I'm going to use it as home for pick up. I am going to use

14:45the pick up. So you can, and if you say you never use these buttons, you can map it to

14:49something else like mute or turn off you can have it so it instantly goes to the

14:56camera if you have that that's a nice feature that I count

15:00like to have because in in my car I like to have like a front camera and a back of

15:05camera so if you press that mode you can have just the camera show up which is

15:09nice so now I should be able to have a volume control if I go up down all the

15:18controls so yeah you don't have a knob now but now you have this which is

15:23nice. And then wireless right now, and let's let's, can we plug in this real quick to see

15:32if the USB is charging. So we have a USB, make sure the USB works. My phone is charging.

15:45And it's charging decently. It's not fast charging anything, but it'll charge, generally

15:52from my experience, it'll charge faster than your OEM1. The OEM1 will usually only

15:59So it'll charge it at a faster rate where your battery just looks like it's going nowhere.

16:06So yeah, we have pretty much everything we need to install AM FM radio.

16:12We can actually test that run at too, just to make sure we have signal.

16:30So we do have signal, which is great.

16:33And then to hold a preset, so this is 1.2.5 here.

16:37And then bam, now every time we go to this one, it's going to be that.

16:41and you can set your presets, which is awesome.

16:45Now you said, okay, there's a bunch of these wires,

16:47why didn't you install it yet?

16:51This one is for the 4G capability,

16:53so if you, you wanna have LTE connection to your phone,

16:57you can, of course, you can put a SIM card,

17:00but we're not gonna do.

17:02These are extra USBs, we can add them to the back.

17:06It has more, more clutter, but if you,

17:08that's something you're interested into,

17:10Go ahead and that where you have three USBs and so on and so forth.

17:14Now this is RCA inputs and outputs for your subwoofer and if you have RCA component.

17:26This is for your LTE SIM card, so that's where you would put the SIM card.

17:30You can use your phone's zoom card.

17:33So if you want to test that.

17:36GPS antenna, we're actually going to install it.

17:38So let me just put this thing here.

17:42GPS antenna.

17:45So you're like, okay.

17:51You're like, okay.

17:55We already just installed, we saw like Google Maps

17:59and Waze and stuff like that.

18:01Why do we need to install GPS antenna?

18:03Yes when you're pulling Android Auto it uses GPS on your phone. Let's say you lost your phone or something like that and

18:10You need to find your way home. This will help and you're like, okay

18:14There's no internet connection though because I don't have my Etsy think of this more like a Tom Tom or a Garmin

18:20You don't need that it just it looks at the satellites and I don't know where you're at

18:24that. So, when it comes to these insoles, some people put it on the top. I'll tell you,

18:29I just put it right here, and it's easy, it's fast, and I rarely use it, but when I do, it

18:35actually still has a touch connection. Look for the GPS lettering. I like how they have

18:41these little... and then you just screw it on. The other two ones are for 4G, which

18:50we are not using because like it's nice to have but here in America we're just

18:59gonna use Android Auto and we're just gonna use the connection offer phone

19:02it's nice because Android Auto doesn't or Apple CarPlay also doesn't need hot

19:06spot so you don't have to pay that for that extra it just works and that's

19:13pretty much what's left in here oh there's one last thing is microphone now

19:19Now for my experience, we actually did a test where we used this microphone versus the

19:24microphone.

19:25They sound exactly the same, in terms of quality, except this is ugly because you have to route

19:30this around.

19:31This is extra work.

19:32So I, I, I, you know, I had this microphone placed right here, I think you know it looks

19:39ugly, but it sounds better just using the microphone on the screen.

19:46we're not going to install that so all all this stuff is not going to be

19:54installed that's just mostly for 4g

20:00subwoofer stuff that you just don't need other than that. Yeah, we're gonna wrap

20:05this up. Alright, so we're just basically pushing back in. Make sure it's all lying here.

20:15There you go. This one actually doesn't have a connector, right? No. For some

20:27reason. So we have that popped in. And lastly, they're all, it's just held by

20:35plastic clips. There you go. It's a beautiful beautiful dog. Check that out. Let's look at the fitment. That's really important. Nice clearance right here. Nice tolerance all the way around. Looking good right here. There's a slight little bit loose right here but

21:07um yeah and then we just got turned on this thing have you seen the new tundress yeah a

21:15big screen i have it oh you have it in the sun oh man so we have it right here um looking beautiful

21:26this unit looks amazing what's really nice is it's a glass so the other um the oem one was

21:38Yeah, we'll keep it up out for now you keep it on look at the man, you know, we can't do the whole

21:44Sound but we're all good, so yeah. Thank you guys for watching. I'll catch you guys in the next one. Peace
