Apple CarPlay & Android Auto Head Unit Install: Toyota Tundra 2007–2013 / Sequoia

John swaps his dad's old CD head unit in a 2010 Tundra for a big-screen Android unit with wired and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. Pry the trim off (it's mostly clips), transfer the pop clips, plug in the harness, test, then route the Wi-Fi, GPS, mic and USB cables and snap the trim back on.

Yes — you can install This kit on the Head unit for the Toyota Tundra 2007–2013 and Sequoia 2008–2018 with a 20 min DIY job. John swaps his dad's old CD head unit in a 2010 Tundra for a big-screen Android unit with wired and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. Pry the trim off (it's mostly clips), transfer the pop.

Overview

John's dad had an aftermarket CD head unit on old software and wanted Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wired and wireless, so John upgrades him to a much bigger screen. His dad didn't use the knobs anyway. Eject any disc first. The trim comes off with plastic trim tools: start at the bottom, then use your fingers once you have a gap. This dash is held in more by clips than screws, and the clips at the bottom are the hard part. Transfer the OEM pop clips to the new unit. The harness plugs in for power, rear speakers, steering-wheel controls (there's a second plug if you have the upgraded audio) and the antenna. On the first power-up the Toyota logo loads and FM radio shows the song info. He screws on the Wi-Fi antenna (it's short and easy to lose, so do it first) and hides the GPS antenna on top of the dash. The microphone goes on the column trim, and up to three USB cables go into the glove box. His dad didn't need the USBs, so John zip-tied them. The dash trim is the fiddly part: hook the top in, tuck the wires so the GPS and Wi-Fi antennas clear, and slap it in, since there are no bolts. He calls the fit at the top really good.

Parts

  • Android head unit with CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Vehicle harness (power, rear speakers, steering-wheel controls, antenna)
  • CAN bus box version if you have JBL audio
  • Wi-Fi antenna, GPS antenna, microphone, USB cables

Step by step

  1. 1

    Eject any disc▶ 1:05

Make sure there's no CD left in the old unit before you pull it.

  2. 2

    Pry off the trim▶ 1:17

Use plastic trim tools to get leverage, starting low. Go slowly, and once there's a big enough gap, finish with your fingers.

  3. 3

    Release the clips▶ 2:22

This dash is held mostly by clips, including latches at the bottom. Unplug everything behind it and the unit comes out.

  4. 4

    Transfer the pop clips▶ 3:43

Pull the OEM pop clips off the old unit and put them on the new one, top and bottom. Make sure none flew out.

Tip: These clips sometimes shoot out when you remove the old unit, so look for any that went flying.

  5. 5

    Plug in the harness▶ 4:32

Connect the main harness, the rear speaker plug, the steering-wheel-control plug (there's a second one on trucks with the upgraded audio) and the antenna.

  6. 6

    First power-up▶ 6:24

Start the truck. The Toyota logo loads, which means the power wiring is right. Test FM radio: song info should appear on screen.

  7. 7

    Wi-Fi and GPS antennas▶ 8:35

Screw the short Wi-Fi antenna on first so it doesn't get lost. Put the GPS antenna on top inside the dash. You won't need it if you only use CarPlay for maps.

  8. 8

Mic, USBs and camera input▶ 10:02

Stick the microphone on the column trim after wiping the spot clean, and run up to three USB cables to the glove box. A backup camera input is there if you add one.

  9. 9

    Tidy the wiring▶ 15:35

If the owner doesn't need the USBs, zip-tie them together so the bundle fits behind the dash.

  10. 10

    Reassemble▶ 17:36

Pull the lower trim out slightly for clearance. Hook the top in first, tuck the wires so the GPS and Wi-Fi antennas clear, then press the trim in until it clips. There are no bolts.

0:00guys so we're going to be doing the install on a 2010 tundra as you can see we already

0:20have an after market head unit it has a CD player it has you know it's a cool head unit

0:26But the thing is, my dad, he had this for a while now.

0:29It's on an older, you know, older software.

0:33And he's just like, hey, John, I really want

0:35Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, wired and wireless.

0:38And I was like, you know what?

0:39Let's go, you want it?

0:41I'll get it.

0:42we're gonna be upgrading to this bad boy right here.

0:45Way bigger screen, and he says he prefers it.

0:48He likes the knobs, but look, he has,

0:50he has zero control knobs that he primarily uses anyways.

0:53So, all right, let's get it.

0:56Now the first thing we need to do of course, if there, excuse the rain, but it's kind of beautiful,

1:05you know, you have this nice interface, but we gotta eject this, make sure there's no disc

1:10in here, see if he's listening to his favorite music, there's no disc, so we're fine.

1:17So try to use your plastic trim tools, see if you can get some leverage, usually there's

1:22some down here you want to be slow with this but also you know if you can even

1:34try to get it from here you see how it kind of already lists and then once you

1:40have a big enough gap I would use your finger to just do the rest and you I

1:48mean unless you want to remove the whole thing I think a gap like this is

1:52big enough. And now we're going to be working on this part right here. So yeah, again just pull.

2:10Now I made a video on removing the OEM which has a little bit more screws.

2:18This was being held more by clips. So if you guys want to check out that video,

2:22go ahead now remember there was latches towards the bottom. Let's make sure we

2:29get those latches in there.

2:38Yeah it's clouted in pretty solid right here so I'm trying. I'm trying to remove that clout.

2:45I'll try unplug everything in the back too, I know I don't have a

2:51best view of it for you

3:15Ah, my fingers!

3:20Sometimes, you know, it just hurts doing that good stuff.

3:25And we're just going to move this clip.

3:30There's one clip down here.

3:35Come on. Come.

3:39There it is. And the unit just comes out.

3:43You want to transfer your existing little pop clips over there, so we're going to be transferring these clips over.

3:52Alright, to remove these OEM clips you just kind of pull. Try to be careful.

3:57This is how I do it. They just shot out, but yeah.

4:01You want to transfer these clips over to the new head unit.

4:06So you have the clip and you pop it in at the very, the very top right here.

4:18I'm going to transfer it to the bottom part so it clips on to the bottom.

4:24Sometimes these clips fly out when you uninstall them, so just make sure they're in.

4:30Back of your head unit so it looks something like this.

4:32what you guys want to do is you want to get that, um, the harness we, we had earlier just

4:37right here, it has the antenna so we really don't need to use this part but, but other parts

5:02And the most the most difficult is having the knowledge of each part the most difficult part is having the knowledge of each part

5:07but this is something but this is something that you can do it yourself

5:09this is something like this requires a lot of finesse but it's definitely doable

5:14the next thing we want to do is do the

5:19the rear speakers, which is this 8

5:21BAM

5:22and the next thing we want to do is have the serial controls which is this bad boy

5:28hopefully it will fit

5:30BAM

5:31there's another serial control one or in Toyota's had this if you have

5:35the upgraded audio so it's usually included again we also have this which

5:40is the antenna. Which we have, so let's just tuck this back in here, you

5:54going to plug it in. So there

6:24Oh nice. It's working. So let's see if you guys get the angle. We have the Toyota loading

6:37up. All right. So this is a real a sign that unit is working. Power wise, which is a big

6:44step. So you know, um, well, the unit's not dead. you a..

6:54Right here.

6:56I might have to

7:00to

7:02I'm just going to remove it.

7:04I'm going to risk the scratches for you guys.

7:06Very satisfying.

7:08So you heard the sounds too, which is great.

7:10Here are the applications that it comes with.

7:12so so it

7:15you can also plug in the radio if it's long enough while you can test it

7:24I'm gonna plug it in that way check out the audio

7:27so I have the radio FM plugged in

7:31turn it down a it all the way off for now

7:37Turn it down a little bit.

7:41All the way off for now, just in case I'm not in the shot.

7:44So here in Sacramento, we have 1-0-1.

7:48Let's do 1-0, 2-0-5, I aint like that.

7:52They sound like hip-hop and stuff.

7:55There you go.

8:00And you can see it has the meta tag, so it is working.

8:03We got now.

8:03Now playing life is good by featuring Drake.

8:07That's awesome so another thing that you guys want to do is you can do more of the install

8:12install but I might just check the fit in real quick sometimes very different variants like

8:18the Secolia, the Tundra 2010, Toyota

8:21Toyota changes it very slightly so I just want to make sure it fits so let's get this.

8:27So you get this baggie full of the accessories so we're gonna open it up and see what's

8:35good. Now the first thing I usually like to do is I like to do the Wi-Fi because

8:41that thing's like a short stubby antenna that's kind of easily to lose so I'm gonna

8:46have this bad boy over here just screw it clockwise make sure you don't cross

8:53very snug beautiful the next thing you want to do the GPS antenna now you can

9:06have this GPS antenna anywhere if you use Apple CarPlay and stuff like that you're

9:11not gonna even be using this GPS antenna but if you use the built-in GPS in this

9:16I usually just have it like right on top here it's perfectly functional for

9:21I'm going to make sure it's nice and snug and then I'm going to pull out the bad boy on top I don I don't this sticky just in case I do want to remove so I'm just gonna make it a little bit less sticky here and then I'm gonna put it right here at the top.

9:51And then we.

9:52Now, you can put it on top of your dash and stuff like that, but in my case, I never do

9:57I mean your cell phone doesn't have a huge antenna sticking out right?

10:02And then we have more accessories like the microphone.

10:06This is for the front like if you have a subwoofer which my Tundra does not and then the backup

10:13camera if you want to have a backup camera.

10:16So this camera does not have, you can do that aftermarket but I'm not going to be

10:20doing that in this video today.

10:23Usb's that's important. I'm gonna have this fish through the glove box in case he wants to charge some usb's

10:34And it's gonna be plugged in right here

10:40And that's pretty much all the accessories besides the microphone you also get another USB so you get one right here

10:47And then you get another one, so you get a total of three more USBs, which is great.

11:00This one's a pretty chunky guy, so, bam, three, three USB upgrades.

11:12And for the microphone, you can get clever on how you want to wire this, but this is

11:17how I'm going to wire it.

11:19So I usually like having it right here, so just trying to get like a towel or something

11:28and wipe that area, make sure it's not dusty and then just stick it right here.

11:34It usually picks up to sound good enough and it's hidden well enough where it doesn't

11:39look ugly, but to plug in that it's gonna be right here, yeah so it's going to be plugged in right there.

11:50So we just got to get kind of creative and fish this over. I'm going to try to tuck it

12:04behind this trim piece which

12:05which is going to be the hard part

12:09because it's right here

12:13come on

12:19come on

12:24can also move the steering wheel down

12:34I'm just going to just fish it through, just want to fish it through this area, if it can

12:56I'm going to wrap it around this harness just so it's kind of like secured a little bit.

13:11One more wrap should be good enough.

13:17So we have most of the wiring ready and you just got to plug it in.

13:27You want to plug in everything here but let's see if we can fish these

13:46depending on the car this seems like one

13:50of the cars where it's fully enclosed so

13:52you have to decide where you're going

13:54to route these usb's

14:02sometimes the owner doesn't even use usb's

14:05but you got to route it I'm gonna try

14:07to route it through here to the

14:09the steering wheel area.

14:24Just over here.

14:27And just shake it a little over.

14:40All right

14:45So I'm gonna plug in the rest of the harness and then adapters and we should be good to go here

14:50Really, it's just the main power harness

14:54Which is right here

14:58And then we have the radio antenna

15:01So the next thing I want to do is notice how I'm missing one tram piece

15:06unfortunately I just don't have it's so

15:08your it's just will be good but um you

15:12by these trim pieces and I D

15:15you'll be fine

15:16yeah some fish all these wires back here

15:21Now what you can do is because USB

15:23cables are pretty thick and I think I

15:26just talked to the owner and he doesn't

15:28really want them you can just zip tie

15:32it together and you know manage it

15:35a little bit better.

15:37There's a lot of

15:42So if he ever needs to have the USBs like it's there And the rest of these harnesses there's like a thousand cables' cables. We all know that okay, but It's man. That's why the single thingse nice.

15:48the rest of these harness there's like a thousand cables we all know that okay but it's managed that's why the single dins nice I mean everything is actually are already wired

16:18the thing I just want to make sure it has good clearance right here.

16:26It does. So it does fit right there and, and that's great.

16:40Let me show you the fit me up top.

16:43It's actually really good.

16:45Now you want it kind of sticking out a little bit

16:48because the reason why you want that to look

16:51is because when you're sitting right here,

17:13it wraps around so, you can

17:19your, you're the more important person to have it, so, that's gooch, now the next thing is, I'm going to take it out real quick, and, and we want to, you can have to have a towel right there, if you guys are pretty careful with your interior

17:36Now you want to let this part is a really pain so you want to make sure you match this

17:45to have the best fitment down here.

17:47Having better fitment down here, we'll save you a lot of it.

17:50And it's literally just these clips so you don't really have much of a choice.

17:58It's just, these plastic clips., you're going to pull this out a little bit so you

18:11can have more clearance right here.

18:16It's not a really good design by Toyota to be honest.

18:41So that's looking good. Check the fit there. You want to have flush with no

18:48gaps right there. Obviously. Next part is it's like the order of operations but

18:56backwards. So you want to get this in. These two hooks go in first. Tuck these

19:01wires as much as you can. Make sure your GPS antenna clears and your Wi-Fi clears. That's important.

19:10and then see the part is when you when you when you have the snug right here you

19:18got to make sure it stays tight, right there give it a few slaps it should clip

19:32been real good. Make sure the vents are clipped in. Give it a few slaps like,

19:52Because there's no bolts give it a nice wipe with your hand. Wow, that's looking good
