Universal Android Head Unit, 6 Months Later: Long-Term Review in a Subaru BRZ
Kim has used her universal Android head unit with built-in CarPlay daily in her BRZ for six months. It hasn't slowed down, radio reception is strong, wired phone audio sounds a bit better than Bluetooth, the screen is scratch-free, and it doesn't block the vents. The only issue was the occasional dropped phone connection.

Yes — you can install This kit on the Universal double-DIN-mount Android head unit with a floating screen (Amazon, AliExpress and eBay links in the video description) with a 10 min DIY job. Kim has used her universal Android head unit with built-in CarPlay daily in her BRZ for six months. It hasn't slowed down, radio reception is strong, wired.
Overview
This is a six-month check-in with Kim on the universal Android head unit in her BRZ, after the channel had tried everything from a 13-inch unit to a motorized rotating one. She uses it every day and hasn't had any slowdowns or lag. FM and AM reception is strong, with song info and presets, and the radio keeps playing in the background with a home-screen widget. Plugged into her phone, maps zoom quickly. Audio is good. Wired sounds slightly better than Bluetooth, but not by much, and compared with the OEM unit it's a big step up even on the BRZ's basic speakers. The phone connection has dropped a few times; unplugging or waiting fixes it, and John says the ZLink team is working on compatibility. She stuck with it because it feels well built, isn't too big (the 13-inch one completely covered the vents), and the mount adjusts higher or lower. The glass screen has no scratches or dust after six months, while the OEM unit's gloss plastic had scratches and slow GPS. At about $500–$600 with built-in CarPlay it's a bit steep, but they think the quality makes it worth it. They call it a jack of all trades that does everything well.

- 1
Radio▶ 0:30
Kim uses FM/AM daily. Reception is strong, with stereo, song info and presets, and the radio keeps playing in the background with a widget on the home screen.
- 2
Performance▶ 1:17
Six months in, it hasn't slowed down or lagged. Plugged into her phone, maps zoom in and out quickly with full detail.
- 3
Audio▶ 3:02
Pandora and Spotify over USB sound great. Bluetooth is good, but wired is slightly better. Even on the BRZ's basic speakers, it's a big improvement over the OEM unit.
- 4
Compatibility▶ 3:45
The phone connection has dropped a few times. Unplugging or waiting brings it back, and John says the ZLink team is working on compatibility.
- 5
Quality and design▶ 5:05
It's not too big, so it doesn't block the vents (the 13-inch unit they tried did). The mount clips adjust the height, and the glass screen handles sunlight fine.
- 6
Value▶ 8:26
It's about $500–$600 with built-in CarPlay, a bit steep, but they think the quality is worth it, and it charges the phone while plugged in.
- 7
Holding up▶ 9:29
There are no scratches and no dust on the glass screen, and it still looks brand new. The OEM unit's gloss plastic had scratches and very slow GPS.

0:00We have Kimberley over here and a little towel to block some of the lights, so you don't see all the glare and it's right, it's right outside
0:30I haven't had any issues with it, slowing down or lagging. It still works great. I use your radio daily
0:37So you use like a FM radio AM or FM radio, and is there is the quality like reception wise pretty strong on these Android head units
0:46Yeah, I would say it's pretty strong. It's it has like a it has like stereo
0:51radio it shows the metatag data and stuff like that and of course you can
0:56have your presets which she has right here it's really nice I mean the
1:00interface it's blue and stuff like that but you can also always go on
1:04home and have it play in the background while you're having that and you also
1:09have a little widget right there so that's great so day by day that's what
1:13you do this in their radio is there anything else you do just performance
1:17wise, what happens when you plug in your phone?
1:47the phone.
1:48You see how fast it like zooms in and zooms out.
1:52And it shows all the detail.
1:53Now I drive a Tesla Model S.
2:17Yeah, yeah, it off
2:47Has it ever skipped songs,
2:58you said the FM radio sounds great, but how about overall
3:01the audio experience?
3:02Audio because I plug it into my phone, I don't have any issues.
3:06I'm using either Pandora or Spotify.
3:08I haven't used the Bluetooth as much because I just plug it in and use it.
3:13I'll play audio is good.
3:15Yeah, and I notice these Bluetooth 1s, the sound of, the sound quality is good but when
3:20you have the sound quality is good but when you have it hard plugged in and have it directly
3:23like just playing the sound quality is a bit better, but not by much, but if you listen
3:45It has dropped the connection a few times, but you just unplug or you just wait and it reloads. I think I talked to one of the guys
4:13not the SIDA but the Z-Link guys and they said they're working in compatibility
4:19with
4:43into those issues.
4:44Other than that, how do you like the head unit overall these last six, six months?
4:49Because we've been going through many head units on
4:52our channel from a 13 inch hand-dred head unit to a rotating hand-dred head unit
4:57like motorized one.
4:59What made you stick with this head unit over let's say those ones right there?
5:05I would say it lasts long, like the quality is better. I like it because it, it's not too
5:14big. I think the other one that we've had completely covered the vents. This one is just
5:18perfect. It doesn't block the vents. Yeah. And you can adjust this, you can adjust
5:25higher or lower. There's mounts. It has the clips back here where you can adjust
5:29to make it higher or lower but yeah from the driver's side you can adjust it and it's not
5:36blocking the vents so you can get that air flow to your face. Right and the design I like this design
5:43it's clean simple um it's it is a glossy surface but I don't have any issues with it
5:50you know sunlight wise um it loads pretty fast the processing is pretty fast too
5:56I don't have any issues with that. When I plug my phone, it works right away, and I don't have any complaints.
6:02complaints there. Yeah, the sound quality I definitely it's a it's above um
6:07like the OEM unit was pretty trash, this one actually sounds really good.
6:12And we
6:15just have a small BRZ with
6:18just decent speakers.
6:20, but when you just when you change your head
6:22to an Andrew from the factory, like if you have an OEM unit,
6:26it's a big difference in the sound quality.
6:29I'm not talking about,
6:30if we go to a pioneer or Sony, how much better that would be.
6:35We're and we're actually on plan,, we're actually on plan on making a video buying a, you
6:39know, a $ the other a $1000 head unit, or $800 head unit, something really expensive, comparing
6:44it to the De.
7:05better than chrome. The BRZ, they thankfully still has this
7:35in the. you and with the way that it looks it's pretty much like putting a tablet onto your dash and it's great for me I, I appreciate the Android version of it and working with the GPS has been a blessing because I normally just look at my own home office and it's dangerous that way when we just put this in yes on you just look at this day you need to look at your home office.
8:05on and it's great it's easier to navigate it's easier to see your head is
8:09closer to basically right here so you can look at the windshield and just
8:13overall of just overall a better experience for sure yeah I I really I'm
8:18really happy I'm really happy with this unit it's the reason why we came back after
8:21switching so many head units came over here decided to go back to the side
8:26finish is nice quality is really nice price was it's like $500 to $600
8:32With the built-in carplay, which is a little bit steep, but the quality here it's worth it
8:38Yeah, the quality here is worth it
8:38And when you plug in your phone, you're charging your phone too, which is nice
8:42And that's just like the overall, the whole thing, the package, it's well rounded
8:47I'll call it like the jacks of all trades, it does everything well
8:50Could there be things that can do better?
8:53Like if you know, just had less bezels or the sound quality was the best of the best
8:58It does a lot of things right above average on a lot of things making it the whole thing just great overall
9:05Yeah, this unit is pretty sick
9:06So if you guys want to check out this head unit
9:09I'll link down below where we did a review on our a review of this head unit
9:15This is six months after just going over the reliability and stuff like that because people are always wondering
9:20Hey, how's this head unit holding up? So we did a six months and it's still rocking good
9:25There's no scratches or anything. It held up great.
9:29When we had our OEM head unit, the GPS on the OEM head unit was
9:35unusable. It was so slow. There were scratches and stuff on the glossy plastics.
9:40This is glass and. It's pretty scratch resistant.
9:46There's no dust on the screen. There's no scratches.
9:50Which is great.
9:52And, you know, six months, and it still looks brand new.
9:55That is something to be had.
9:57But yeah, links down below,
