Tesla Model Y (2020–2026) · Power frunk
Is a Power Frunk Worth It on a Tesla Model Y?
Short answer · Usually worth it
Usually worth it if you use the frunk often. The Model Y, including the Juniper refresh, doesn't come with a powered frunk; you pop it from the screen or app and close it by hand. A power frunk kit (typical $350–$600; the Hansshow Juniper kit is $399.99 as of October 2026) adds power struts and a soft-close latch so it opens and closes from the screen, app, key fob or a button. It's a plug-in DIY of about 1–3 hours. Skip it if you rarely use the frunk.
- Typical cost
- Typical $350–$600 kit; shop install ~$150–$300
- Difficulty
- Moderate DIY (plug-in, no cutting)
- Time
- 1–3 hours
Worth it if…
- You use the frunk for groceries, bags or charging cables
- You're tired of fingerprints and dents from pushing the hood down
- You want a soft-close, more premium feel
Skip it if…
- You rarely open the frunk
- You don't want to work around 12V wiring
- You'd buy the cheapest no-name kit (weak struts and brackets are the common failure)
Will it fit my car?
- Buy the kit for your exact build: 2020–early 2025 Model Y and the 2025+ Juniper use different kits.
- On a Juniper, check whether your frunk trim has a factory button; kits come in with-button and no-button versions.
- Pre-Juniper cars with the older lead-acid 12V battery mount the power lead differently from the lithium-ion 12V cars.
- Keep the control box away from the wheel well and water channels, and install the emergency release so you can still reach the 12V battery if it dies.
My take
I've run a Hansshow power frunk on my own Model Y for almost three years with no issues, and I've installed them on the Model S, Model 3 and the Juniper. It's the mod I'd do first on any Tesla. The Juniper install is plug-and-play: swap the struts onto new brackets, swap the latch for the suction latch, plug in the Y-splitters, ground and power, then set the speed.
What goes wrong
Most problems come from a missed latch-sensor wire, a poorly grounded power lead, or mounting the brain where water collects. Test the button and app before you reassemble the trim, and score alignment marks before moving the latch so the hood lines up.

FAQ
Does the new Model Y Juniper have a power frunk?
No. The Juniper refresh still has a manual frunk: it pops open from the screen or app, but you lift and close it by hand. A power frunk kit adds powered opening and soft-close.
How much does a Model Y power frunk cost?
Kits typically cost $350–$600. The Hansshow Juniper kit is $399.99 as of October 2026. A shop install usually adds about $150–$300.
Is a power frunk hard to install?
It's a moderate plug-in DIY: remove trim, swap the struts and latch, plug in the harness and ground. Expect 1–3 hours with basic sockets and a trim tool; no cutting.
Will a power frunk void my Tesla warranty?
In the US, an aftermarket part alone doesn't void your warranty, but Tesla can deny a claim for damage the part caused. Plug-in kits can be removed if you need service.
Can I open the frunk if the 12V battery dies?
Yes, if you install the emergency release that comes with most kits. Route it somewhere you can reach, like near the tow hook cover.
Can I control the power frunk from the Tesla app?
Yes. Good kits hook into the factory signal, so the screen, app and key fob open it, and many add a button or push-to-close.
