Hansshow Power Frunk: Tesla Model 3 (2022) DIY Install

Pull the frunk trim and seven 10mm bolts, swap in powered struts and brackets, fit the soft-close latch motor, plug in the control box harness and test the button-operated frunk.

Pull the frunk trim and seven 10mm bolts, swap in powered struts and brackets, fit the soft-close latch motor, plug in the control box harness and test the button-operated frunk. This 21 min guide covers the Hansshow power trunk and frunk kit for the Tesla Model 3 (store link in the description) with tools, parts links and the full video.

Overview

John installs the Hansshow power frunk on a freshly delivered 2022 Model 3, so the frunk opens and closes on a button instead of pressing on the lid (fingerprints and dents). Tools are simple: a 10mm socket, a flathead or plastic trim tool, needle-nose pliers for the latch spring, and cutters with zip ties. The plastic trims pop off their clips, the cabin air-filter cover comes out, and seven 10mm bolts free the frunk tub. Each gas strut comes off by prying out the small metal clip at its top and bottom; the new powered struts go in with their wires facing the right way, then the OEM brackets are swapped for the kit's L and R brackets. On the latch, the factory spring is replaced with a lighter one (quieter) and the soft-close motor is mounted. Wiring is plug-and-play like Legos: the struts each take a two-wire plug, the fused red lead goes onto the 12V positive terminal with a cap since the lithium-ion battery has no 10mm post, a ground goes to a body ground point, and Y-harnesses go between the latch and its factory connector. The control box sticks to the metal front cross beam with double-sided tape. The frunk opens and closes a bit slowly but safely, with even gaps, and the latch can be adjusted for better fitment.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Gather tools▶ 1:52

A 10mm socket, a flathead or plastic trim tool, needle-nose pliers for the spring, and something to cut zip ties. That's about it.

  2. 2

    Remove the plastic trims▶ 2:30

They're held by plastic clips; on a newer car the clips aren't brittle, so they pop off by hand.

  3. 3

    Remove the cabin air-filter cover▶ 3:11

Take it out before the big piece; it has three mounting points.

  4. 4

    Remove seven 10mm bolts▶ 3:44

Four along one edge and one up top are visible; pull up the trim to reveal the other two. Then lift out the frunk tub.

  5. 5

    Swap the struts▶ 5:20

Pry open the small metal clip at the top of each gas strut and pull it out, then do the bottom. Fit the powered strut with the top and bottom pointing in opposite directions so the wire goes in the right way. Start with the harder-to-reach bottom.

Warning: If a strut isn't strong enough on its own, support the lid so it doesn't fall on your head.

  6. 6

    Change the brackets▶ 7:22

Remove the OEM brackets (two bolts each) and install the kit's L and R brackets with the original hardware, loosely at first.

Tip: John skipped this at first and the frunk wouldn't close properly.

  7. 7

    Remove the latch▶ 8:53

Unscrew the latch mechanism and keep the screws safe.

  8. 8

    Swap the latch spring▶ 9:14

Replace the factory spring with the kit's thinner one using needle-nose pliers. It's a bit weaker, so it's quieter. You can keep the OEM spring if you prefer.

  9. 9

    Fit the soft-close motor▶ 10:40

Per the instructions, the small piece should point up, with the spring on top to secure it. The motor pulls the latch down to soft-close and releases it to open. Reinstall the latch.

  10. 10

    Plug in the struts▶ 11:37

The control box is one big harness feeding everything. Unravel it and do one connection at a time; the strut plugs only fit the right way, like Legos.

  11. 11

    12V power and ground▶ 12:48

The 2022 car has a lithium-ion 12V with no 10mm post, so the fused red lead goes onto the positive terminal under its cap, nice and tight. Pick a body ground point for the ground lead.

  12. 12

    Latch and Y-harnesses▶ 14:06

Unplug the latch connector and put the kit's Y-harness between the latch and the factory plug. Do the same for the next connector, then plug the kit's lead into the new latch system.

  13. 13

    Remaining plugs▶ 15:24

The kit's own button replaces the OEM switch. Plug in the last chunky connector (pull the tab, then lock it); you'll hear it power up.

  14. 14

    Mount the control box▶ 16:54

Stick it to the metal front cross beam with the double-sided tape and hold pressure for about 15 seconds.

  15. 15

    Test it▶ 17:49

Press the button. It closes on the slower side, which is safe, and the gaps are even all the way around. The latch can be adjusted to fine-tune the fitment.

0:07Alright, today we got a Tesla Model 3.

0:27This is a 2022 and we already started with some of the mods.

0:30We had the spoiler in the back.

0:32Next up is we're going to do the power frunk.

0:35Now what is a power frunk?

0:36Essentially, when you open the frunk of your car, it would be like any normal car.

0:43open it and then you would have to use our hands to pull it up and then the dampers take

0:46control of it. Let's just demonstrate that real quick. See? You just pull up and then

0:53you have those two gas struts right there that helps. But what if you need to close it?

0:59Now if you have to close it you have to do this. You have to do this. And you have

1:05to. Oh, it hurts my feelings doing that. And now you have fingerprints. If you have OCD

1:13not want to use the frunk, but hey, if you had a power frunk, like a power lift gate

1:21in the frunk, then you can put all your whatever, if you had like food or something like that

1:27groceries, and you say, hey, it might stink up the interior, you put it in the frunk

1:31and you're good.

1:32Now what we have here is the Hansshow power trunk power frunk core technology.

1:39This is the frunk.

1:41It's really nice.

1:42These are like the second gen,

1:43like the fourth generation actually,

1:45so they really tuned this to be something else.

1:49And the install should be relatively easy.

1:52All right, so the tools you're gonna need is a 10 mil

1:56to take some bolts out.

1:56You have a flat head.

1:59I actually don't have the flat head right here,

2:00but it's something to pry open stuff.

2:02So whether it's a flat head screwdriver

2:05plastic trim tool that's what I want to use the needle nose you're gonna

2:08need to use for a spring and then this is just like a cutting

2:11tool so I have two cutting tools and to cut and zip ties and miscellaneous items.

2:17But yeah nothing too crazy you really just need these two and maybe like a

2:20flathead and you'd be set. I'm gonna use some power tools so it'd be quicker.

2:25Color it. Looks fine. All right to remove the trunk.

2:30There's just going to be some tools that you don't even need, you can just use your hands.

2:35You want to start with these plastic trims and they're just held by these plastic clips.

2:42These cars are generally new, so these plastic clips are very new, so you're not going to have it brutal.

2:50Set this to a side.

2:53here next off we have some exposed things we can work on I believe we're

3:01gonna have to remove this piece right here and you actually see some exposed

3:06bolts straight up so I've got to remove that too and I'm gonna show you guys

3:11how to do that but you have before you remove this big piece remove this

3:17the air filter, and it just helps. Okay, just in this time period. This one was even

3:23hooked on, okay? I'm gonna test the quality. I didn't even clip that one on. I hate to

3:29see it, folks. So there you go. You have three mounting points. You got two out of

3:35three. And then we use our 10 mil to remove. I'm gonna tell you where all the

3:44So there are 1, 2, 3, 4, there's 4 right there, and then there's only one up top here.

4:12About 6, but it looks like maybe they changed it before maybe it's under here, just pull

4:20on this, there you go.

4:23So you just, what I did right there, you see I'm just using my hands, you just pull this

4:26up and this will reveal the other two

4:28two.

4:29So there's seven of these bolts in total and to remove this is pretty easy.

4:34There you go.

4:43Put this somewhere safe.

4:45We're going to put it right here.

4:47Let me show you.

4:49Alright, so we have those seven bolts removed.

4:52So the next thing we do is gently flip.

4:55I haven't even used in years I've just used my hands and yeah, I have been told

5:00in there, you can take them out if you want. a little fish it out. now the side piece they

5:09hold like clips. you might have to put them on the side. alright so my microphone quality

5:16should sound better. my microphone is actually facing me now. but yeah check this out right

5:20here. we're gonna replace these dampers right here. now if you see at the very

5:25top. There's this little metal tool, like little metal clip. You want to pry that open.

5:30Demonstrate that for you guys right here. You want to go whoop. You just pull it out.

5:37You see that? You're pulling it right out. Now there's one on the top, one on the bottom.

5:42The bottom one's exactly the same. And after that you're going to put this bad

5:47boy in here. And you see how this is, I had actually twist it, but you can twist

5:52it, but. You have this one pointing here and then the bottom one is pointing the

5:58opposite direction and you want the wire to actually go in. So something like that.

6:04This is how you ideally want it. So I'm gonna demonstrate that in real time and

6:09see how it goes. I'm gonna do the I'm gonna do the bottom one first because it's

6:15kind of like difficult to reach usually you want to hit the more

6:20difficult part so like watch. I took that off. Looks like it's being held on

6:24its own, which is perfect. So you want to one side of the time. Sometimes the struts aren't

6:30strong enough so you kind of have to use your head which I was doing earlier

6:32to make sure it doesn't fall and you get a concussion. But it looks like these struts

6:38are strong enough. Boom. You have your struts now. You want to keep this

6:43safe just in case you revert back to stuff. So we're gonna put this, we'll

6:48put it in the

7:22supposed to change the brackets so this is I'm gonna probably show this beforehand

7:26but I'm gonna take out the OEM brackets probably easier

7:30to take the shred out first but we're having problems with that so let's take it out how it is there's

7:45two bolts there and then two bolts not a lot of installs actually have this so that's why we

7:51didn't do it but for this you gotta it wasn't closing for us all right so we got the L brackets

8:04there's a number L on it and you want to install the new bracket in so usually original

8:11hardware to screw it in

8:22I'm going to do it loosely for now

8:25and then you want to install these ones, of course, too

8:28there's just two bolts

8:30be careful, you don't want to lose these bolts

8:33because

8:35it will take a lot of time finding these bolts of you

8:43which I, I might do right now, because this is a really about angle.

8:53All right, so the next thing we want to do here

8:55is with the directions,

8:57says we should remove the latch mechanism.

9:01So we have it right here, I'm trying to remove it.

9:06Keep these screws safe.

9:14All right, so we're gonna replace the spring right here,

9:17which is right here.

9:19Now you can keep the OEM spring

9:20if you don't have a needle nose

9:22or if you want the OEM part,

9:24but we're gonna basically

9:24essentially replace it with this.

9:26The aftermarket one is smaller in like gauge death.

9:31So maybe maybe it's a little bit weaker,

9:34but because of that intention, it's quieter.

9:37So we're going to remove this bad boy.

9:39Hopefully I don't pinch myself.

9:41There we go.

9:52So I took that part out.

9:54Okay, I was scared that this thing was going to fly out my eyes, but it was pretty.

10:00pretty tame pretty tame it's not reporting the new one in

10:26let's see if I can do it right now the latches locks I don't know if I can pull

10:29it all the way back but the car thinks it's closed all right so I actually

10:40had to undo the spring because when I'm putting this mechanism on which is

10:45it helps with the soft close. The direction says you want to have this little piece right

10:53here kind of go up like this. I'm going to put this spring on top of that to kind of

11:02help secure it. After that done, you should be okay. That's the motor and you can kind

11:19to see how it works. It pulls down this latch to help unlock the lock. Then we're going...

11:25We're going to install it. Something like this. And we should be all good to go.

11:31Alright, so we got the mounting system for the frunk latch on. We have those two struts

11:37on right now. And then we have this computer. This is how everything is

11:41is going to talk together. Make sure it's working nicely. So the box itself is just

11:45one big harness that like feeds into this one thing. So where it's just right there.

11:53So you pretty much have to power every single piece.

11:57There is a lot of wires and it gets kind of confusing

12:01so I'll make it as easy as possible. So just unravel it and do it one at a time.

12:08time the first thing we should do is something simple, let's get the struts powered, the struts

12:25have these two little wires come out of it and you can't mess it up because

12:29Thanks for watching!

12:30It's like Legos, it only clips to the right one.

12:35So you just put these bad boys in, boom, and boom, alright, you already got two.

12:48the same with the other side, alright, so we have the new lithium-ion ones and pretty much

12:54there is no 10mm that you can screw on, so in this case all we did was use this

13:00cap and we put the, it sounds like pretty good, but we put the red terminal into here.

13:09It's the wire with the fuse and it's on there really good where it's like super tight.

13:15So it's on, it's on there really good. And then next off what we need to do out of the harness.

13:21So these, there's these extra ones which I'll show you guys where to go for those.

13:25Then there's the ground one. You can just pick one of these ground spots. I think this

13:29This one's like the usual to go

13:46So what you do is you basically use this as a washer and there you had right there now if you have a normal battery not the

13:51I don't want you just use this you do the same thing with that wire

13:54Alright so we got pretty much a few cables left, two dinostics pretty much, and we're

14:03are, have to figure out one by one which one it does.

14:06The first one you want to get, that's pretty easy to see, is the one in the latch.

14:11So you pull this, then you pull it out, this one looks like it, so you plug in this,

14:19hoping it would fit. It doesn't. Of course. It does. And then you want to use that end

14:28right there to put it back into here. So now the wire is basically right in

14:37between the two. Which is exactly what you want. Alright so then there's this

14:43you see this little like little hose thing right here. It's kind of

14:45hard to see. You might have to make it a little bit right. It looks good.

14:48you pull this out by just pulling this tab up and then look the wires look the same that's good

14:55so there's like a little y shape so what you want to do is

15:01Put this in here, and then the new Hansshow harness into the Tesla

15:09All right, and then you have this plug right here

15:14Goes into

15:16the new the new latching system our

15:20Right, so we pretty much have everything plugged in besides two

15:24now this one is the OEM switch button we're actually going to now use the

15:32Hansshow one which is this one so we don't have to worry about that one but this one

15:36needs to be plugged in as well and that's a pretty chunky look in cable this

15:43one right here we're gonna plug it in boom set that to the side and these

15:53things are pretty good. In terms of water resistance and water proofing, I'm going to plug in this bad boy.

16:02Now to do that, you might have to pull on this tab.

16:14And then you lock it. That noise is the noise of it getting power, which is brave as we're going

16:24going

16:54For the box right here we're gonna apply some 3M double sided tape or whatever this is called

17:00just double sided tape and we're gonna put it in the frost uh the frunk cross beam per directions

17:09and you'll it's down here you'll see like a steel or aluminum some kind of metal cross beam

17:14that's where you're gonna install it too yeah it's pretty deep but you'll see it put

17:25I'll put pressure on it for like 15 seconds.

17:31This car doesn't have a radio

17:39Alright that's on and then for this

17:44There was no place to really put it I'm gonna put it right here to see how that works for now

17:49And we are going to test the trunk closing for the first, we are just going to press that

18:00button.

18:01More on the slower side, but that's pretty safe.

18:08And yeah, there you go.

18:09Look at it.

18:10It's pretty good.

18:11Here's my finger.

18:12Can't fit it through any here.

18:13It's pretty even consistent all the way through.

18:16Yeah, it's great.

18:20Can I hold?

18:21Can I hold it?

18:26fitment right there and you can also adjust the latch and everything to make the fit

18:30fitment even better and boom it works. That's great. It's a great thing to see guys.

18:38All right there it is boys. Tesla Model 3 2022. We just got this delivered

18:45and now it has a Hansshow's power frunk. Open that.

18:50Now it's a space you can use, very clean install, close it and of course like I'm just an average

19:04guy I don't really know how to install this stuff but hey, it works and I was able to

19:10do it myself with the some help and with this YouTube video hopefully it will

19:15make it a little bit easier for you guys. Hey can you open the trunk and the frunk?

19:19Just so people can see the speeds. There it is, that's tight. Can you

19:29close both? I tried to do it the same time if you can. It's that easy. About the

19:39same speed about the same speed not bad that. that's tight. yeah links down below if you
