A slim, app-controlled RGB LED strip that runs along the bottom of the Cybertruck dash and dances to music. It powers off the glove box USB-A through an included splitter, so TeslaCam still works. Install takes double-sided tape and some trim tucking. This 26 min guide covers the Tesla Cybertruck dashboard (EVBASE link in the video description) with tools, parts.

Overview

The Cybertruck already has an ambient strip low on the dash and doors, but it sits so low that you mostly can't see it, and it's dim. EVBASE's RGB strip mounts along the bottom edge of the dash where everyone in the cabin can see it. It runs full RGB colors and a long list of music, mic and rhythm effects from a phone app. The kit plugs into the glove box USB-A port through a splitter that adds three USB-A ports and a USB-C, so your TeslaCam drive keeps working. John confirmed this by formatting the dash cam drive with the splitter in place. There's no real instruction sheet (the included one is for a Model 3), so he works it out step by step. The strip's own adhesive wasn't strong enough, so he put the included automotive foam tape on the strip first, then pressed it onto the dash. He tucked the cable behind the glove box trim and the silver dash trim so nothing hangs. At night it's far brighter and richer than the stock Tesla ambient light, even at the same color. It's independent of the Tesla light settings, though, so it won't follow the car's color. White was his favorite for daily driving, and he saves the light show for the kids.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Why add it▶ 0:21

The factory ambient strip runs low along the dash and door trim. It's dim and hard to see unless you lean forward. The EVBASE strip sits higher on the dash, so it's visible from the front and back seats.

  2. 2

    Check the kit▶ 3:16

You get a slim RGB strip, a USB splitter (three USB-A and one USB-C), a Bluetooth controller, a power lead with an inline button, extra hardware, foam tape and a wedge tool.

  3. 3

Power it from the glove box▶ 4:40

The only USB-A port is the factory one in the glove box, which usually feeds the TeslaCam drive. Plug the splitter in there, then plug your dash cam drive and the light's power lead into the splitter.

  4. 4

Connect and test before mounting▶ 5:44

Match the arrows on the 4-pin connector, plug the strip in and power-test it. A blue light on the USB connector shows it has power.

Tip: Format the TeslaCam drive from the car's screen to confirm it still works through the splitter. John's did.

  5. 5

    Know that it's independent▶ 7:32

Changing the Tesla ambient color or brightness doesn't change the strip. You control it with the EVBASE app or the inline button.

  6. 6

Pick how deep to mount it▶ 8:11

Run it along the bottom edge of the dash. Mount it further out to see the strip directly, or tuck it further in for indirect, reflected light.

  7. 7

Route the cable through the glove box▶ 9:48

Stick the controller box in place with its adhesive so it doesn't rattle. Pop the side trim near the glove box with the wedge tool and run the cable behind the tabs so it doesn't get pinched.

  8. 8

Tape the strip, not the dash▶ 12:29

When John put the tape on the dash first, the tape came off with its backing. Put the foam tape on the LED strip, peel the backing, then press it onto the dash from the driver side across.

Tip: Press it toward the plastic part of the lower dash. It sticks better there than on the wrapped section.

  9. 9

    Tuck the extra cable▶ 17:23

Push the extra cable behind the silver dash trim. Hold the strip in place with a finger so it doesn't lift while you tuck.

  10. 10

    Reinstall the trim▶ 18:23

Put the plastic pieces back first and make sure all four tabs seat. Check that the glove box still opens and closes freely.

  11. 11

Change effects without the app▶ 20:16

Pressing the inline power button cycles the light sequences, so you can skip the phone app if you have privacy concerns.

  12. 12

    Night test▶ 21:19

At the same green, the EVBASE strip is far richer than the Tesla light at full brightness. John later pushed the strip further out for more direct light, which also hides the dash's uneven edges.

  13. 13

    Power behavior▶ 24:22

With the outlets on it stays lit while parked. Without Sentry Mode it stays on for about 5 to 10 minutes, then shuts off when the truck sleeps. You can also turn it off manually.

0:15What's up everybody we're here today installing EV bases

0:20dashboard dashboards Cybertruck LED strip. with, so with the Cybertruck you have an

0:27LED RGB strip that runs along these door panels

0:32you can't really see them during the day. At night you could see them they're pretty lit.

0:38You could adjust it on the screen right here under lights and then let's turn it up.

0:45And then so now you could probably see a little bit better. Let me see if I could

0:48get a better light so you could change it throughout a different spectrum red yellow it's

0:53the whole RGB spectrum so let's go with something kind of visible let's go with

0:57the red okay so you can see the red light at night but the problem with the front

1:04is it's pretty dim and which is cool you know you don't want it too bright but

1:12if you want a little bit of a more of a pop if you're trying to show it off

1:16to the kiddos because let's be honest kiddos love the cyber truck and sometimes when they get in it

1:21you want to give them a little extra show so evb base thought about that hooked it up and they

1:27have this led light strip that i think just plugs into the glove box there's not really

1:36any instruction manual on this one so we'll just uh go and sell it step by step here

1:41The structures that they do give you were for like a model 3, but it shouldn't be too bad

1:47I mean, it's just so that he said I'm hoping that with this

1:53Tesla

1:54Tesla you could see

1:56it's kind of like a

1:57They hand lay this dashboard. This is the

2:01all-wheel-drive variant. They hand lay this

2:04dashboard so like for me I don't know if you guys could see it but I could see that it's

2:11It's not perfectly smooth. This corner job how they round the corner right here

2:17here. It's kind of hand-pressed. The Cyber Beast, the Tri-Motor variant. This dashboard is Alcantara,

2:25but this one's like, like, this rubber plastic, which is kind of crooked. I'm hoping that once

2:30Cricket I'm hoping that once I lay this LED strip it might just kind of clean it up a little bit

2:36We'll see but you could see like if you're in the back seat

2:41If you're in the back seat or if you're in the front if you

2:43Kind of a little bit shorter this LED strip is all the way down here on the trim so you can't really see it half the time

2:51If you lean back you can't see it

2:54It's just kind of just disappear. So with the EV base LED strip it

2:59Apparently will test it out.et but it goes to the music. There's different

3:04Lighting sequences that you could do. It. It could go solid

3:08Bunch of different colors. It'll go on top here, so it will be more visible

3:12So one's solid check it out see how it is

3:17Okay, so upon opening. Let's see. What's what they include this box.

3:20It looks like like they give you the RGB LED strip. It's a really clean slim design. It looks like there's already an adhesive on there. We'll see. And then it looks like it plugs in to give you a USB connector. And the USB connector has three USB

3:38plugs in and to give you a USB connector. And the USB connector has three USBAs and a USB-C.

3:50So and then here it looks like they gave you some extra magnetic hardware

4:00and then adhesive strip and a wedge tool. So let's go see what this is all about.

4:08So I'm thinking this USB splitter the cool thing about this is it looks like let me open this up

4:27Splits this into three USB A's and a USB C and it looks like it kind of toggles a little bit

4:32knowing that the cyber trickling comes with a bunch of USB C's and 110, the only USB

4:40A I could think, think of is in the glove box. So, so we'll open that up, think about the glove

4:47box is it's pretty tight in there sometimes, it has the factory dash USB A for the Tesla

4:58So this way you could still power your Tesla Cam and not have to worry about finding a different spot for it.

5:08So we're just going to go ahead and plug it in there for now.

5:11I'm thinking this sensor is a Bluetooth sensor.

5:14So when you do install the app on your phone, and you can control the different lighting sequences.

5:20So we'll plug that in right now too.

5:28this power supply we'll go ahead and plug this in and then looks like it does

5:37have a manual power button connected to it and at this end you'll you'll see a

5:44four pin we'll connect it to the four pin on the LED does have a little

5:53arrow guide connect the arrows together nice and secure so let's just plug this

6:01Test the power. See if it works. The USB A's on the very end of the dash right here.

6:13Bittin' this car for so long that the screen just turned off on itself. But alright, there you go. I see there's a blue light on that USB connector. So it's showing that it does have power.

6:36And voila! Red LED light strip. So let's just see if the Tesla Cam still works. Let's just see format. Let's just format the

6:53USB drive. Formatting USB drive for dash cam. Success. Okay, so that's telling me that even what the adapter, the USB flash drive is working,

7:02working and I haven't installed the app yet because I'm just making sure this works. This strip works.

7:11Doesn't look like there's adhesive strip so we'll use this adhesive strip.

7:16on their high-temperature resistant automotive foam tape and let's just see if it is in sync with

7:32the Tesla so I'm dimming it doesn't look like it's getting dimmer

7:36and then I want to change it from red

7:38Okay, so it is not in sync, so that's just power that the USB is supplying.

7:47spe I'm changing it to green. I don't know if you can notice, but all the accent

7:52lights on the dash and then the doors were turning green, but the EV base is still

7:57turning red. So this is going to be independent of the Tesla UI screen. So

8:05just go ahead and turn that to green, this is so red we'll probably be able to, we'll control it on the

8:11app and then we're going to go ahead and install the tape along the bottom side of this dash,

8:22so I'm goingter run the double-sided tape along the bottom of the dash right here,

8:28you kind of want to run it along. You can kind of customize it, but meaning you

8:33you can customize how deep you want it in. Do you want it a little bit more direct in your face like this? Or you can tuck it a little, little bit further in so you don't see it directly but then it's going to bounce a bunch of light onto and reflect.

8:43Like the new Tesla Model Y and directly onto the dash. I'm kind of debating what I'm going to be doing. Most likely I'm going to have it visible because that's going to pop a little bit more.

9:15And you can see just running a test. It does. Let's see if it runs along the entire length of the dash here. I'm going to run it all the way over here. It does look the entire dash from

9:41So I'm gonna go ahead and open the glove box again.

9:48I'm gonna try to run this cable cable a little bit cleaner.

9:56Looks like it has double adhesive on here so you could find a place for it to stay out

10:03of the way and not vib

10:04vibrate around, and then this cord, I mean knowing when I installed or when Honcho installed

10:23, the screen and then this screen just kind of pops off pops off you could just pop it

10:27back on, but you can leave it like this all nasty, but I know this piece does come off

10:33right here so we could tuck the wire in there. We'll use the wedge tool that was included with it

10:42and pop this bad boy out open the door a little bit bigger

10:54is here. and there you the. there you go so two plastic tabs that go into the tabs right

11:27And then that way we could run the cable very cleanly inside here. Run the cable along that way. Tuck it in behind the tabs so it doesn't get pinched. They give you a lot of extra slack. So yeah.

11:57There's a lot of room to work with. I'll just kind of pre-flight this along the dash. So I'll be ready to stick it to the dash once I mount that adhesive. But it looks pretty cool. I mean I'm confident enough just to put this back right now because it looks like it doesn't have plenty of

12:20You just leave this here here for now. So here we go. We have some adhesive. All right. I mounted the double adhesive tape onto the LED strip here. At first I mounted the double sided tape onto the dash. But what ended up happening was it stuck to the dash fine. But when I started peeling back the backing on the double adhesive tape it peeled off the tape with it.

12:39double-sided-. But when it ended up happening was, it stuck to the dash fine but when I started peeling back

12:47the backing on the double tape, it peeled off the tape with it. So I found that it was actually much

12:53easier just to mount, the double adhesive strip onto the light itself and then we

13:00the backing on the strip and fill it back that way. I got my helper

13:17And over here, she will act. She's got some backing herself.

13:26So don't mind her making some noise.

13:29This backing is kind of hard to peel off, just the finger nails to get to it.

13:46to to be confused with a licorice. Yes, I'm talking to you.

13:58Pull the back. And then we'll go ahead and start from the. The driver side.

14:05And we'll go all the way here. Okay. Okay.

14:10and then go ahead and I see on the bottom of your dash.

14:16there's the plastic piece and then there's the actual leather rat piece and you

14:29closer to daddy here we go so you won't actually want to look deep in there and

14:38then push it towards the plastic piece because I find that to have a little bit

14:43more of adhesion properties. Yes you agree. So essentially what this is doing is if you

14:57mount it all the way back there you're getting less of that direct light. You're

15:05getting more of the LED light, or the indirect light. Here let me pause this.

15:17Okay so we're gonna go ahead and put this double adhesive directly onto the

15:24LED light because what I'm finding out is the tackiness of the non-backing side is

15:38not as strong so I want to part that mount onto the actual dash to be the

15:50strongest. So we'll take off this packing and it should be able to stick a little

16:29So originally I was thinking about getting it a little bit overly exposed, which could be a little bit more tacky.

16:39But now seeing as it's probably going to be able to attack better if it bonds to the actual plastic surface underneath the dash.

16:51I'm going to go ahead and do the indirect LED light hoping that it's going to look better at night this way.

17:01Or it's not going to be as visible, obviously, because it's not an LED strip just burning straight to your face during the day.

17:10Now, unless you look at it from the underside like this, you're not going to be able to see at all, which is a cleaner look.

17:17And at night, let's we'll see how that goes.

17:21So with this extra cable, I'm going to tuck it behind here, give it a little bit of wiggle.

17:30I'm going to keep my finger placed on the LED light

17:34just so it doesn't

17:37become loose. Took it in nice and clean so the black cable gets tucked behind this silver trim piece

17:48and I could kind of pull on it. This way too. There we go. Nice and clean. No gaps, no sags.

18:02Alright, go ahead and mount.

18:10Yeah, you messed up the light, the video, let.

18:13Are we still recording?

18:19We were still recording, so I accidentally turned it off.

18:23So we're gonna put this trim piece back.

18:27Go ahead and mount's like this, I believe.

18:32Let's see here, not like this.

18:36So we'll put these plastic pieces in first, and then we'll super clean install behind

18:55the trim pieces.

18:57Make sure all four tabs are placed in as you can see here, you can even see a cable

19:01with the door open running down you can see a small bit right here but that's not

19:11too bad and then clean clean I'm just gonna go ahead and make sure it's bonded

19:17completely this light strip is so slim I don't feel like it's gonna have too much

19:25a bunch of weight on there. Let's open up the glove box.

19:39Still Able. It's still able to open and close, just fine. I could even run the cable along

19:46the white dash so it's even tucked even better.

19:55cable running along here.

19:57Just so so many spots

19:58for you to run cable

20:00for these

20:10éndez. I'll leave these loose for you. I'll leave these loose for now, but eventually you'll I'll just go ahead and close it.

20:10Just pressing it.

20:16I don't think it's actually doing. Oh, it's changing the colors of the lights.

20:19That's cool.

20:20So you don't even need app control

20:25So, if you're

20:27If you're afraid of privacy concerns on your phone, pressing this power will actually change

20:41But yeah, this power button on the USB does work.

20:47Changes the color, changes the sequences, the flash patterns, solid color, so we all

20:59Super clean, loving it.

21:03I'll catch up with you later on tonight.

21:07We'll go ahead and put that on show instrument cluster back and we shall be good.

21:14Okay, so we got a nighttime shot right now of the EV base LED dash, light strip.

21:28Here we have it in green.

21:34we got green on the EV base green on the

21:38the Tesla

21:39Light and I think let's see right here. This is already adjusted the Tesla light all the way up

21:47I'm gonna adjust it all the way down. You can see clearly even with it all the way up

21:53It just does not have that same intensity that same color

21:58The EV base has and this is full green too

22:00And this is full green too.

22:02So you could just see how more rich the color of the EV base light is.

22:06I decided to push the light a little bit further out.

22:09So now you don't have that radiant ambient light in direct light.

22:13You see the tube running across the dash which looks a little bit cleaner than me.

22:21I tried both and I like this way better.

22:23You see it a little bit more and then it kind of hides the irregularities of the dash a little bit better.

22:33better and then we can go through the app right now cycling through the app i'll

22:39Puss it up on the screen. Here we got red and I'll try the mimic the Tesla colors at the same time we are red

22:51We got green Tesla screen right here and then blue

23:01Just the blue on the Tesla is just looking faded

23:05teal yellow white white white actually probably is gonna be my preferred go-to

23:16for the EVB flight strip um it provides a little bit of like ambient light

23:23into the dash and it's just not as harsh driving not as distracting you got pink

23:31and there's all types of settings on the tabs you could be to the mic the

23:37vibrations the device mic the phone mic the music it could dance to all of it

23:42it's kind of strobe into my voice right now but if you could just imagine a

23:47song playing in the background you want a pre-game get it energetic there's

23:53different rhythms spectrums this one's pretty cool so it's not as like crazy in

23:58your face and it's still kind of bouncing to the sounds all types of

24:00And it's still kind of bouncing to the sounds.

24:05All types of options available, I mean it's pretty limitless here.

24:12You could time it, schedule it.

24:16You could also schedule it so it times off and on.

24:25When I have this car parked and the outlets are on, like the 110 outlets, it'll stay on the entire time.

24:30the 110 outlets it'll stay on the entire time and then if I have it parked

24:35without Century Mode it will stay on for like about five ten minutes and then

24:39when the car goes into a deep sleep it'll turn off or you could just turn

24:43it off manually so here we go switch it over to green turning it off

24:50manually, what you see happening is hitting that power button, it turns off

24:57manually and you'll see the strip run across the dash and that's how it powers

25:01off and on which is kind of unique. So powering it back on you can see that

25:06strip light up from the right side to the left side. And then this is actually

25:14zero percent intensity so it could get a lot brighter than this let's turn it to

25:20100% and it just the Tesla LED dash light pales in comparison I'm probably not

25:30It's not going to be running on 100% light just because it's pretty intense.

25:38It's pretty intense, pretty distracting while you're driving, but I mean if you've got kids in the car and you want to show them a good time, I think this is where it's at.

25:53Yeah let me know if you guys have any questions. I think if you leave Century Mode on too, because it's powered through the USB dashboard, it stays on all the time.

26:01I haven't verified that yet, but if you guys care just let me know in the comment section.

26:06And I'll post a link to the discount code in the description below.

26:11Thanks guys.
