Electric Power Frunk Kit Install: Tesla Model S (Power Struts + Soft-Close Latch)

Add a power-opening, soft-closing frunk to a Tesla Model S. Pull the frunk liner and tub, pop the nose cone, swap in two power struts, rebuild the latch with the kit's motor and spring, tap 12V power and ground, and plug in the controller. Then the frunk opens from a double-click on the key fob or the Tesla app.

Overview

Closing a Model S frunk by hand means pressing on the paint, which leaves fingerprints and dust marks and risks scratches. This kit makes the frunk open and close automatically. The controller is an add-on, so it doesn't change the Tesla's computer and you keep all the factory functions. The kit has two power struts, a soft-close latch motor and locking bracket, a new helper spring for the latch, harnesses, a small speaker (buzzer) and an emergency front release. Remove the plastic trim, clips, rubber gasket and frunk liner. On John's 2015 P85D the tub came out after removing 14 mm and 8 mm bolts. You need the single-hook latch. He pops the nose cone by sitting on it, presses the parking sensors out, and mounts the emergency release where he can reach it. Each strut swaps with a flat-head screwdriver. On the motorized one, the wires face down. The latch comes off with three 10 mm bolts. The spring is very strong, so wear safety glasses. The bracket hooks on and the spring goes into its notch. For power, tap the 12V battery terminal before the fuse (8 mm and 10 mm), ground to the chassis, then plug in the struts, the Y-split for the frunk button and the latch harness. The yellow wire gets spliced into the OEM red wire with a crimp tap. Hold the button to initialize (it beeps), and then a double-click on the fob or the app opens and closes it. John later removed the buzzer for stealth. He says you never get under the car, he'd never done struts before, and anybody can do it.

Video chapters

Step by step

  1. 1

    Why a power frunk▶ 1:18

Closing the frunk by hand means pressing on the paint: you get dirty hands, dust marks and fingerprints, and you risk scratches. Power struts and a soft-close latch solve that.

  2. 2

    Check the kit▶ 2:01

There's a controller (an add-on that doesn't change the Tesla computer), two power struts, a soft-close latch motor and locking bracket, a new helper spring, harnesses, a buzzer and an emergency release.

  3. 3

Remove the trim and liner▶ 4:33

Empty the frunk. Pop off the plastic trim clips and rubber gasket with a flat-head screwdriver, then pull the frunk liner (watch for the release cable and LED light).

  4. 4

    Remove the tub▶ 6:40

On John's 2015 P85D there were two 14 mm bolts and an 8 mm nut (one 8 mm bolt was missing on his car). The tub then lifts out.

  5. 5

Check the hook and pop the nose cone▶ 7:58

You need the single-hook latch. Sit on the nose cone to pop it out, and press out the parking sensors.

Tip: Mount the emergency release where you can get to it. With a nose cone you can tuck it there, otherwise try the wheel well.

  6. 6

    Swap the struts▶ 10:29

Both sides are the same. Pop off the old struts and fit the new ones. On the motorized strut, the wires go toward the bottom, and it rotates into place. The motorized struts hold the frunk up on their own.

  7. 7

    Remove the latch▶ 14:55

Remove the two 10 mm bolts and the 10 mm on the opposite side, and unplug the latch connector (you'll reuse it).

  8. 8

    Rebuild the latch▶ 16:36

Pry off the old spring, then fit the motor bracket so its hook catches the latch. Bolt it with the 10 mm and pull the new spring into its notch.

Tip: The spring is very strong, so wear safety glasses. It may be easier to do this off the car.

  9. 9

    Power and ground▶ 19:16

Pop the 12V battery cap, take off the 8 mm/10 mm nut and connect the kit's power lead before the fuse. Ground to the battery or bare chassis metal.

  10. 10

Plug in the struts and harness▶ 21:37

Plug the left and right motors in (the plugs only go one way). Then intercept the latch plug, connect the latch harness, and add the Y-split for the frunk button so both the car and the controller see it.

  11. 11

    Splice the yellow wire▶ 24:04

There's no adapter for the yellow wire, so John splices it into the OEM red wire with a crimp tap. It takes some force to get through the insulation.

  12. 12

    Initialize and test▶ 25:34

Hold the small button to initialize (it beeps). Then the frunk opens and soft-closes from a double-click on the key fob, the Tesla app or the quick controls.

  13. 13

    Final touches▶ 31:37

John removed the buzzer for a quieter, stealthier setup. All he needed was a 14 mm, 10 mm and flat-head screwdriver, and he never got under the car.

0:00you have the power

0:18Today we're going to be working on the Tesla Tesla again. This for model S but it the.

0:48automatically open and close. Now, if you guys were looking to buy this, check out in the

1:18is you know you grab this hook or something like that you pull it down and

1:22You have to close it like this

1:24Now first off you're touching your paint which you're means you're probably going to get your hands dirty, and you're also scratching your paint

1:31Which is no good on top of that you leave like greasy like grease

1:36So you'll see like right now that you can get close

1:39. You can see that the car is not clean

1:41So there's dust on the car when I'm pressing down on it

1:48and it also leave like a little like fingerprint dust there so that's always

1:55pretty annoying but with the new power struts it's gonna solve all that. Now let's check

2:01out the unboxing see what's going on over here. Now this is gonna be the controller

2:08the aka the brain this is more like a you know an add-on it doesn't change

2:15the computer on your Tesla it's just a little helper so you still retain all

2:20your functions with that. Nicely wrapped wrapped and then again we have a car from Tony

2:30Smart Tesla workshop. I follow them on Facebook Facebook because they

2:33started posting stuff on Facebook and that's easy for me but they also sell,

2:36sell things on eBay and things like that.

2:40So that's awesome.

2:42Thank you, Tony, for that.

2:46Get some unwrapping.

2:47So I have my knife.

2:48I know it's pretty crazy looking knife.

2:51Gotta be careful when I'm cutting the tape.

2:57A little serrated knife action right there.

2:59Some plugs, zip ties.

3:02Now this is going to be the new motor for the soft closing and this is going to be the locking mechanism.

3:14You're going to put this on your OEM latch. This is cool. You gots some harnesses, some more wiring, your power strut so you got two each side.

3:27You're gonna plug this into of course the little brain thing right here

3:35And you'll have two of them

3:37And this is gonna be a little speaker so cool. We got a little speaker

3:42And you had the news helper spring for the latch up front

3:49Very cool

3:51So this is what comes into the kit, two power struts

3:54you have your new motor,

4:24some quality control stuff right there. So we're gonna work on the the

4:33is gonna open the front. You have to remove these pieces because what we're

4:39trying to do is we're trying to remove basically remove this which is

4:44really easy all you need is a flat-head screwdriver for

4:52So I would say anything you have in your front, set that aside.

5:05And we're going to remove some pieces, these are just help Eclipse and this little like

5:10rubber gasket thing.

5:11So we're going to just pop this bad boy off, super easy.

5:20I can like have a little noise like that.

5:23Two real right there, set that to side.

5:25Do it the same thing on the side.

5:27There's clips on this a

5:27There's clips on this end.

5:29So you can't want to take the clips out there.

5:31You can hear the sounds of the clips.

5:33Little rubber-basket thing.

5:38Some clips up the front.

5:45Then you want to remove this bad boy.

5:47I believe it's

5:53actually it's part of this so we'll hold out on that.

5:57and yeah, let's see what we should do next.

6:11So we're going to take off the frunk.

6:14I heard you just take this liner out so we're going to take the liner out.

6:25And now watch for these, for the liners you do have the trunk, the

6:31tape opening and then the LED light, so let's get to that.

6:37Alright so we have the little plastic trims removed.

6:40Now when we have the liner removed we had for the nose cones 2015 P85D at least in my case

6:47We had a 14 right here 14 millimeter if you want to get close. You had a 14 millimeter bolt right here

6:52You have a 14 millimeter bolt right here, and we had an 8 millimeter bolt right here a little nut right here and?

7:00It could be another 8 but for my car for some reason it didn't have it so it could be

7:10bad boy out, hopefully, hopefully, oh, look at this tub, I think this is like, okay,

7:21it's not, you get the little harness right here, I'm like, man, you can

7:25probably source them, like, make this into a cooler, and now we have the inner

7:32They're goods, isn't it beautiful?

7:36Look at that.

7:39We could remove this cowl too.

7:41I don't think it's needed, but yeah,

7:45let's a remove lap of the cowl.

7:52Isn't that sick?

7:53You can literally, you wanna sit in there?

7:56I don't know.

7:57So for the next part is we're gonna have to get a little

7:58closer to this little hook thing.

8:01If you have a single hook, again,

8:03single hook means you're able to do this mod.

8:06I believe that the two hooks, you cannot.

8:09So single hook, you're good to go.

8:11Now the best way to pop the nose cone

8:13from my testing, is you just sit on it.

8:15You see how it happens when you just,

8:17you give it a little sit,

8:18like kinda comes out a little bit.

8:22Yeah, but so you just sit on it,

8:25or you can just pop it up that way.

8:26And it kinda comes out.

8:31And this would give me some access, it doesn't clip on real good.

8:39And now there's some sensors right here, parking sensors.

8:42Now you just press on them, and you should be fine.

8:47Now the kit will come with an emergency front opener.

8:52You can put it anywhere you want.

8:56I think what I'll do is put my emergency front opening in here.

9:03Nose cone boys have that ability, but, you know, if you don't have a nose-cone, then

9:12you can probably tuck it into the wheel well or something like that.

9:15Now look at that.

9:17We have the nice nose cone, carbon-fibre.

9:24Now to remove this it's also pretty simple you can use a of these tabs.

9:31You can, you can, you can just use a wrist action and then it pops it out halfway.

9:45You should be the be able to pull it out at this point, because when you push it in it

9:51expands the thing you pull it out it makes it a less expanded

9:56put that somewhere somewhere safe

9:59let's do

10:21So, we're really exposing this this locking mechanism, which is

10:29great, and then we have the power struts.

10:31now we're going to start doing the most of these

11:01and

11:31It doesn't matter which side you do it, they're both the same.

12:01insert the thing here and pop it in.

12:08And now we got the new power struts.

12:10Let's do that to the other side.

12:12We'll get hit

12:12with one more time.

12:13Now we have destroyed

12:43I use of you, I use your head.

12:50then pop this one now now now pro tip heavier with the

13:13We put the motorized the gangster one in here, you want the wires towards the bottom and you

13:24want to rotate it so it can actually go in like that.

13:30Alright, let's see, let go.

13:32So it looks like the motorized ones can hold its own weight.

13:38Cool.

13:39Cool, so we've got that part done.

13:45Now we want to do the latch part, let's go to the

13:49the tools and the latches.

13:52We have the latch boy and yeah we're going to have to um, so we have the latching mechanism

14:07right here with its power harness or some kind of harness.

14:10Now you want this thing to go into here spew while you're doing that.

14:16y

14:17This is where your emergency latch is, so let's say your car battery dies for whatever reason, you should be

14:22be able to have access by just pull it, it actually waits.

14:29So, I mean, ideally you would want it like right here or something like that.

14:34So you pop your nose cone off, you do

14:45it.

14:46I don't think anyone's gonna be popping your nose cone off and open your

14:48frunk, because I don't know what you would put in your frunk but it's a good thing to consider.

14:55So the next thing we have to do is remove this latch. Now depending on if you have a refreshed one

15:02you basically have to go from the top and it's insanely kind of tight up here.

15:07I would use just a regular wrench but if you have your the basically the nose comb boys

15:14again to doing it good. We actually actually have a little

15:17little more clean. I don't think you even need to go from the nose cone. You can just

15:21do it right here. There's just more clearance and there are two 10's so just

15:28remove the two 10's and there's another 10 right here on the opposite side.

15:33All right so this thing's kind of loose. I'm just gonna go it by hand. That

15:39way I have more control. I have one hand unscrewing and one holding. Now I do have

15:52power tools and I do have magnetic trays but not not not everyone has that so I'm

15:59doing it the old-fashioned way for you guys. There you go. So now we have let's

16:08remove this little plug right here so we we want to read we have to reuse this

16:20plug because it's going to be plugging into the little controller over there so

16:24we have this bad boy right here we're going to replace the spring and we're

16:29also going to add in this little part right here that we were talking about.

16:36Okay just remove the spring be careful for your phalanges honestly the spring

16:50is kind of super strong. Move the spring I just pretty much pride it open I had

16:55safety glasses on because it's a spring you want to be safe now it will look

17:01like something like this your locking mechanism now what you want to do is

17:04get this bad boy right here with the and we gotta find a way to basically to

17:10open it motorized and to do that you see that how there's this little hook

17:16right here. You want

17:20to have that hook right here. So it's

17:25hooked and then this is where your 10

17:28millimeter bolt is going to go. And on

17:31this side you want to have it, you see

17:34there's a

17:38a little thing so let's have a kind of

17:41loose put this little rectangle thing in

17:43here have it hooked and it's nice and

17:51secure and should be good to go with

17:56the ten mills back this is probably like

17:59the hardest spot like this is not a

18:01Especially if you just like to fidget with things, but it is a little bit out of most

18:09people's comfort zone.

18:10You can do this with the lock out of it, but I have it already installed.

18:15You want to put this spring, basically pull it into that little notch.

18:20Again, doing it outside might be easier.

18:26This is how we are doing it.

18:33So you you have it locked into this little latch right here and then you just pull.

18:37Pull the

18:46pull the spring on. It might be easier. It might be easier to do it outside. I bolted

19:00it on because of I it's bolt it on because it and it's not flying all overer the place. In

19:05my. In my case it was easier. We have the spring on. We have the bracket nice and in.

19:10So we're going to mess with the electronics part.

19:16To do the electronics, we need power to it.

19:21So I'm going to show you guys how to do power.

19:23This is going to be your 12 volt battery.

19:26You just pop this cap off.

19:28If you're, you know, if you worked on cars before, you're very familiar with this.

19:34Just pop it off.

19:35Looks like it's easier right there.

19:40And then you're going to see like an 8mm bolt, we are gonna need of you need

19:43need to use this to basically tap into it.

19:48So let's unscrew that.

19:49We, we have to remove this little tab right here.

19:51We're gonna have to get power of the battery.

19:54Now we're gonna use a 10mm unscrew this.

20:00So we get some power or you can do right here too.

20:04let's do it before the fuse

20:08I just kinda to kinda want to snake it through it

20:10be careful obviously this is

20:12it's not too

20:13I mean it the only 12 volts so I mean it's not

20:15anything crazy

20:17and you have the fuse right there so

20:27you want a nice snug

20:30Then pop this back over it

20:33I'm gonna close this so it's like at least kind of water tight

20:39And then we need the ground wire as well

20:43Now you can ground directly to the battery again or just anywhere on the Chansey same in thing on the side to

21:00make a metal contact so we now we have ground and I'm going to keep the twist

21:16high so so now you have your power to your to this cable we're gonna have to

21:23use to get the brains of the operations into the thing so we have

21:26power we have the struts and now let's look over this thing real quick we have

21:37the motors for this we're gonna do left motors again there's a lot of twist

21:44size so just remove them and then we're gonna connect they fit like

21:53Legos so you can't like do the wrong plugs boom and then we're gonna do the right

22:00motor we are doing great we have the power we just did the power so get that

22:09power purple wire in. Purple wire in. Oh it's lighting up. But we still need the, soft

22:27clothes. Now your kit comes with another plug-and-play harness, which is again

22:31clutch and we're gonna have to start plugging things in. So we're just gonna

22:40start doing it. So we're gonna intercept that plug, male to female on the side.

22:52And then we're going to connect it to the latch.

23:00And let's kind of just loop it all under this and I'm plugging the main bad boy here.

23:12that signal. Another Y split plug right here.

23:33then the main harness. The main harness has a light which I am not too sure about yet. We

23:40We have a, a buzzer, so that we have a little sound thing, and we also have some, we have

23:48a plug that basically does a split between the trunk button, so you want to plug in

23:53the trunk thing right here, so you have a little Y split, so that way the computer

23:58knows but it's still going to the Tesla thing as well and then you have this little

24:04yellow wire, now the yellow wire you need to plug into the OEM, so instead of having

24:09a y-split. Now if you get it from this angle we're gonna have to actually tap into

24:18this plug right here. Unfortunately we don't have an adapter so we're gonna actually just have to use

24:29it so I believe we're gonna splice into the red wire. So this is just a little crimping tool

24:38and you just try to pull back this little like tape like material and we're

24:44just gonna plug it in right here and clamp it on now you're gonna need a

24:51little bit of force to get through the wires so yeah do something like this

24:59You're a clip sound, and then you're going to plug it back in here.

25:09And now we are plugged in, plugged in, everything is plugged in, power wire is plugged in.

25:26Yeah, so we have everything plugged in besides this

25:32light the

25:34So yeah, stay tuned. You just hold this buttonnarrow button right down here to initializes it, it

25:43You hear like a beeping sound

25:45And then, and now if you press it, it should close.

25:52And then, then, there you go.

26:11Alright so I have the front right now all the wires are plugged in I'm just

26:17gonna hit the little thing right here and it's just gonna be automatically closed

26:24now I have on the slower settings I don't really care about making it fast

26:28anything but

26:29you can get there and then if I want to open it's just two buttons on this key

26:34and it opens again this is on the slower speeds which I don't mind

26:39because yeah I rather to

26:41to do it safer and for the beepings right now of course we're still product like

26:48installing but I can remove the speaker and get rid of the beeping but the beeping

26:53is nice because it does tell you like when you close it and it's like a lock

26:57down

26:59Now let's go, it will work from the app too I believe.

27:06So, let's go try on the app, see if you can see the controls and then we're going to do

27:16the front.

27:18This action, yes, so it works on the app too and then it also shows on the app that

27:28your trunk is open and if you go to controls again they hit hit closing and let's see the picture.

27:44So it should show it closing I guess it's taking a while to the process

27:50but it's closed oh there you go so it does update through the internet saying that

27:56your trunk your your front is closed and we'll go from the inside to now I have the

28:09nose close the nose cone unplugged with those parking sensors so let's say

28:13now let's go to the quick controls hit open boom it's

28:25going up it's nice and if you want to Close you just hit open

28:34again and it will close same thing with your apps and stuff like

28:43plug the button because we're putting the

29:13or two so you can kind of see in here where I mounted it it's a 3M they're

29:49There's a little mushroom right here.

29:59It's always cool to get this little mushroom in there.

30:09Mushroom awareness.

30:10You can't open up please open up baby

30:34I gotta go to sleep guys, I'm just kidding, but yeah, it's a lot faster, check this out.

30:58Oh, baby, almost hit the top of the house.

31:28and now if you want to open the front, we just use our keys and a double click and it opens

31:36like that.

31:37It's nice, it's quiet, I took out the speaker because it was kind of noisy, it's good for

31:43the installation process but I think it looks a lot more, you know it's- a stealth being like

31:46this and then if you want to close it just double click it and then it goes
