Swap the Tesla's side-mirror glass for Suma Performance blue-tint convex mirrors: fold the glass down, pop it off the clips, move the defroster plugs (bend the tabs for clearance), and snap the new glass on. This 5 min guide covers the Suma Performance convex replacement glass for the Tesla side mirrors with tools, parts links and the full video.

Overview

John swaps his Tesla's side-mirror glass for Suma Performance convex mirrors. The convex shape shows more and cuts blind spots, and the blue tint reduces glare. The glass also has a heater element and optional turn-signal LEDs. The install is simple. Tilt the mirror glass all the way down, then pry it off with a plastic tool or your hands. It's held only by clips. Behind it are the plugs for the heater (defroster) and the auto-dimming. You no longer need auto-dimming, and John says it won't throw codes, since the blue glass cuts glare all the time anyway. Some owners also find auto-dim doesn't work well with tinted windows. Reuse the defroster plugs. Either orientation works. On his glass, though, the two heater tabs stuck straight out and would hit, so he bent them down slightly for clearance. He skipped wiring the turn signals because it's a lot of work. Tuck the wires in, line up the glass and push until it snaps on. Then repeat on the other side. Suma sells the mirrors on its own site, which isn't an affiliate store, so the buttons below are search links.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Why convex▶ 0:00

The convex shape shows more and cuts blind spots. The blue tint reduces glare, and it has optional turn-signal LEDs.

  2. 2

Tilt the glass all the way down▶ 1:05

Use the mirror motor to tilt the glass fully down. That gives you a gap to pry from.

  3. 3

Pop off the OEM glass▶ 1:35

Pry with a plastic tool or your hands. It's held only by clips. If it's tight, help it up a little at a time.

  4. 4

Unplug the heater and auto-dim▶ 2:22

Behind the glass are the defroster (heater) plugs and the auto-dimming plug.

  5. 5

    Skip auto-dimming▶ 2:52

You won't use auto-dim anymore. John says no codes are thrown, and the blue glass cuts glare all the time. Some owners find auto-dim doesn't work well with tinted windows anyway.

  6. 6

    Optional: turn signals▶ 3:12

The new glass supports turn signals if you want to wire them. He skipped it because it's a lot of work.

  7. 7

    Reuse the defroster plugs▶ 3:25

Either plug fits either tab, so orientation doesn't matter.

  8. 8

Bend the tabs for clearance▶ 3:41

On his glass the two heater tabs stuck straight out and would hit. He bent them down slightly, like newer versions that come angled.

  9. 9

    Snap it on▶ 4:28

Tuck the wires in, line up the glass and give it a firm push. Repeat on the other side.

0:00What's up guys. Today we gonna be changing out the side mirror of this bad boy. We

0:05are going to be showing the sumo performance of the convex mirror. It does have integrated-turned

0:30LEDs that blind you the blue really helps to, cut down that, glare and then the convex shape means you'll see

0:36more. Maybe I can show you a quick comparison of that right now. So as an

0:42example we're gonna kind of lumen in a little bit you can kind- that's what you kind of

0:49see and then this is, it's gonna be a little sticking

1:05to install something like this, it's actually quite easy. What you can do is just get some kind of prying tool. This is all you need. you can even use your hands if you want. So let's get it. So we have this thing kind of sticking out that way we can pry. I'm just going to use the motors. The easiest for me is having it all the way down. When you in have it all the way down, you're going to have it

1:35You can actually use your hands or a tool.

1:43Generally using your hands can get you.

1:45Let me show you the back of how these tabs actually look.

1:52So this is how it looks like on the back and it's just held by clips.

2:05If it's kind of too hard, kind of help it out and move it up a little bit.

2:17It is a tight

2:22and move it up a little bit more and there's several clips and plugs so the defroster and

2:40the auto dimming. So this is how it looks. The back of the O.M unit right here

2:47This is a heater element and this is the auto dimming functionality

2:52We don,t know this auto dim any anymore more and youre not going to have any codes throw because

2:57it will pretty much stop glare

3:01all the time

3:02This is going to really come.

3:03Some people also say that the auto diming doesn't work when you tint your windows.

3:09So having it like this all the time is a good thing.

3:12And you can see from the back the back weasel here we have turn signal capability.

3:16If you want to keep your turnes signals that is an option and then you have these

3:22little tabs right here for the defrosting.

3:25Now you're going to basically reuse of any of these plugs will work so it doesn't matter

3:32which side is.

3:33You just plug it to the back of this but for my case I noticed that when I know this

3:41it's making sense. But these two little tabs they kind of stick too far out which you're

3:47gonna have to do is actually bend these these or maybe the newer ones, so it's angled

3:52down. Kind of like the these ones how they're angled down that way you haven't

3:56worked clearance this one won't give you enough clearance so I'm gonna bend them real

4:01quick that way we'll keep keep that defrosting, and capability so on. On my

4:05unit these the defrosters were pointed straight out. I gave it quick bend

4:11. You guys can see the little Ben I did that way I'm not gonna have any

4:13clearance issue and as far as these turn signals I'm not gonna wire them

4:17because though it's great if you want to wire them it's just a lot work a lot of work

4:23and I don't it's it a lot of work real quick and just

4:28you just snap it on it. So we gotrk both of the defrosters in you guys have a good look at that because

4:40it's the angle at that it shouldn't affect the any

4:44any clearance issue you're running into here. Perhaps sucks these wires in nice and tightly

4:49and you just give it a good push. Fingerprint's all over this bad boy. And that includes the the tutorial. We have the mirrors in. Do the same for this. Other side and you're gonna be golden. Awesome.
